Ultimate Spider-Man

"Run, jump, Webzip!"

I bought this game in New Zealand, along with X-Men Legends 2 as part of a 2 for $60 deal. I got it home, and didn't play it much. But now that I am getting into this more and more, I am loving it!

Graphics: 9/10
Very well done. The cut scenes are excellent, done in a comic book form, it really gets you into the feel of the comic book series. In the game, it is excellent, like a cel-shaded picture. The buildings are lovely, and so is everything else. The buildings, however, look a bit odd when you are wall-crawling up them. It gets a bit annoying not knowing how far yo need to go, but it's all cool. The clouds look great as well, as if they were straight from a cartoon. Very well done, a very strong point of the game.

Story: 7/10
Eddie Brock Jr and Peter regroup, and find the formula both their parents were working on to cure cancer. However, it spills, and Eddie is consumed, and becomes Venom. Now you have to stop Venom from doing damage to the city, and as Venom, well, destroy everything in sight pretty much. Great side stories as well, like R.H.I.N.O, and others. As Venom, the storyline is that you need to destroy everything possible. There is also some people who want the suit, so that adds as another side story. However, some of these side stories are dull, such as the Shocker one near the start.

Gameplay: 10/10
THIS is what gives this game a huge boost. If you don't quite feel like continuing the story, you can roam around the city, doing city events, combat tours and races. Also, some other great things in the interactivity with the environment. Some of my favourite past times are climbing the Empire State Building, car surfing(getting on top of a car as it is driving), and chasing random civilians. Not to mention climbing to the top of buildings, diving off, then trying to swing out of danger at the very last second possible. Very fun. Gets annoying when people are always running from you, and screaming. Yelling "Call the cops!" and such catchphrases, it makes you want to chase them even more. Ah, good times, good times.

AI: 6/10
Not the greatest AI ever, but okay. Constant shouts from civilians, screaming, etc. get on your nerves very easily. Also, if the police are attending a crime, people yell "Call the police!!!!". Very annoying. The criminals are pretty silly as well. All you do is hit them pretty much. I do the same move over and over, and they can't work out how to beat it, or even dodge it. Very annoying. Boss fights however are much harder than normal events. Wolverine was a bugger. Anyway, an ok AI that could have been much much better, had more time gone into it.

Controls: 9/10
Very good controls. X and Y for fighting is a bit odd, but you get used to it. The triggers uses are brilliant. R to web swing, L to web up anemies, R+L to Zip. The combos that can be done with these triggers are beautiful. L+Spin of the left thumbstic throws them, L+Y Web Kick, L+X web punch. Very good fun. Web swinging is excellent fun as well. The best thing about these triggers is that when you are fighting on a tall building, you can throw your enemies off the building, resulting in an instant kill. Very good and useful idea.

Rent or Buy:
Rent first, then if you like it, buy it.

Overall: 9/10
This game is very good, but for the most enjoyment, it would help to know a little bit about Spiderman. This helps for boss fights, etc.
