Alien Hominid
Review by Deaftone
"One of the Most fun experiences you can have nowadays!"
Have you ever found yourself blowing the dust off your SNES/Megadrive to get yourself some good-old sidescrolling blasting action? Look no further than this little gem!
Developed by Tom Fulp of NewGrounds (where the game was originally available to play online for free) this is a must have for all you nostalgic action lovers out there!
Graphics - 9/10
What can I say? Being a bright, sidescrolling, blast-em-up, it wll obviously have to look the part as well, and it achieves this greatly. Your little yellow Hominid firing big colourful blasts at big nasty FBI guys, scorpions and vultures in the desert, all good stuff.
Music - 8/10
Nothing really noticeable abouth the music, as most of it is drowned out by repetative fire, screams explosions, etc. The sound effects are fab and give you a real feel of accomplishment when you hear those FBI guys scream, that big 30- foot high robot collapse, etc.
Controls - 7/10
There is so much that your little guy can do! All the maneuvers are easily pulled off, but memorising them at first can be a bit tricky. However, once you have it nailed down, you can roll, dive underground, etc to your hearts content.
Story - 8/10
Little Hominid is flying through space one day, all of a sudden BAM! he is shot out of the air and crashlands on Earth, only to have his ship stolen by the Government. Your job, as Homind is to blast your way through hordes and hordes of bad guys to get it back! Simple, yet effective!
Gameplay - 10/10
A true gem, not only do you have the trademark side-scrolling levels, you also get to fly your ship through space on some levels, giving you some variety. The levels often contain at least 2 huge bosses for your little Homind to make mincemeat out of, pure button bashing action!
The game is also multiplayer, so you can blast through the game with friends!
And that's just the main game! As well as all that, you also have numerous mini-games alongside the main game. One of these, the PDA game, is enough to keep you interested for maybe more that the main game itself (not dissing the game at all, by the way!) as it includes a level editor for you to make your own levels for the game! As well as this, and a few others, you can also trigger events in the main game which earn you...hats!
Headgear - 9/10
Yes, hats! These range from a pair or ears for your Hominind to a flower hat to a chef hat to a pirate hat, just about every hat you can think of! A little random fun, and actually a useful tool to use in multiplayer mode, so you know who is who!
Overall - 9/10
Pure nostalgic, button bashing mayhem- a must-have for fans of blistering 2d sidescrolling action, or in fact anybody!
