Fable: The Lost Chapters
Review by nm14
"In terms of new content: don't expect much"
Fable originally came out for Xbox. It was a good game, mixing a little RPG with action adventure. I enjoyed it, as well as many others. But, the game fell short mainly because of its length. So, Fable: The Lost Chapters is released. I am guessing Xbox released this game mainly to increase the original length of Fable. They did not do a very good job. There are about 5 new quests to play, and a few more collectibles. Otherwise, the game is nearly identical to its original.
Gameplay 10/10
Don't get me wrong, Fable has an excellent system of gameplay. Basically, you gain a certain type of experience based on how you defeat enemies. There are tons of items in the game to collect (although most are not very impressive or useful throughout the game). You will have several quests to choose from, most of them being side quests that are completely optional. Even with these sidequests, the game is still pretty short.
The part that I like is that you can upgrade your abilities, but still roam a large world and actively fight enemies along many paths. One of the main problems is that the paths are usually narrow, hindering on your mobility. Still, you have lots of areas to explore and many activities to participate in (fishing, scavenging, etc.). If you are one of those gamers who like short, but enjoyable games, this is a great game for you.
Graphics 9/10
The graphics are really good, even for the Xbox system. The scenery is very colorful and the cutscenes are well done. For the most part, the game is realistic with its graphics, placing grass and plants in the correct places. That is basically all you can say about the graphics: you will be satisfied.
Controls 9/10
Controlling is very simple. You will have no problems controlling, as button combinations are not really important in this game. Abilities are more important, and you can switch abilities on and off via the main menu. So, controlling your character is very basic and will be mastered quickly in this game.
New Content 5/10
The game falls short here. Luckily, I played this game before playing Fable. If you have never played Fable, this game is PERFECT for you. But if you have, and I am sure many of you who are reading this probably have played the original Fable, you will be very disappointed with the new content. There are 5 more silver keys to find, which is pretty limited. There are around 5-6 additional quests that you can attempt after you defeat Jack of Blades. Still, this only adds an hour or so to your game time, which, all in all, stays rather low. So, don't be expecting a whole lot.
Then again, this game is only priced at 20 dollars, at the most. So, you are not paying a whole lot of money. If you can get this game for cheap, you actually might get your money's worth in terms of new content. It really all depends on how you like Fable as a game. I think it is an excellent game, and I don't regret getting The Lost Chapters. I just think it could have been SO much better if a little more content was added.
Well, thank you for tuning into this review. The final score will be determined by averaging the scores of the different aspects of the game. Keep in mind, the new content is what you really want to look at, since the original Fable has all the rest.
Score: (10+9+9+5)/4 = 8.25 rounded to an 8/10.
