The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition

Review by CarrollFootbll

"The first great RPG for the Xbox"

Well, I know I am late on speaking about Morrowind, but I have to add my views. This game first came out in June '02 and I immediately bought it and loved it. It had to be the biggest RPG I have ever seen and one of the greatest. Later, Bethesda re released it under the name : Morrowind GOTY. This is the edition this review will cover.

Game Play

This game begins with you waking up on a boat on a place called Morrowind. Then blah, you chose your character or make your character and go on. Once you get through the end of the building complex, everything is up to you. There is practically no limits to what you can do? See a sword you want? Creep up and steal it or fight the guy to the death. Want to be peaceful and live in a house? Steal a deed and just go out and do whatever. That is the biggest impact on this game. It WILL take you 200 hours to complete everything and enjoy the full game. Also, there are guilds for you to choose from, such as an assassin guild to a cult guild which gives different quest. The only problems I have with gameplay is it is very easy to overwhelm a newcomer, but you can learn after awhile. Also, I didn't like the find and seek quest or the ones that make you walk all the way across the area to find someone or something. Also, it takes awhile to walk from one place to another. However it is still great

Combat and Magic

In this game, you have 2 ways to fight. 1 is to fight with weapons. This is basically a hack and slash... however, the game does not identify where you hit someone on where you hit them, but on how good your weapon is + their armor. You can be hitting their head all day, but hardly be damaging them. Also, it gets repetitive after awhile to just press attack and then run. Magic is good, but it is weak. The best spell in this game will never match up to the best weapon which is a huge disadvantage. It also sucks to see "Your spell failed" over and over and over again. But surprisingly it is still fun.

Graphics

Yes... Morrowind will not look like Ninja Gaiden, but it doesn't aim for that. It aims for having a very grand feel of things from the looks. However, it does look bland after awhile. A plus is that you actually can see whats on your character... and the water is great. The minus is that it really doesn't look that great.. but it is very huge

Audio

This has the best soundtrack I have ever seen. The opening song is great along with the tunes it plays in the background. HOWEVER, the sound effects aren't the greatest. You'll get annoyed of the same hit sounds and the sounds of the enemies . Also, the NPCs don't have that much dialogue unfortunately, and you might here the same thing alot.

The Expansions

Tribunal is decent, it isn't as open, but it does have a good plot and it is fun to play still, but I wish it could have added more and been more open and bigger. Bloodmoon makes up for it however by adding so much more to do, such as becoming a werewolf and other quest you can do up in the cold. Also it is much harder and boast the difficulty more then ever. I loved every minute of it and it is easy to get addicted to that expansion. Both are easily accessible minus the loads. This is what hampers both expansions, the loads are horrid.. but it's the price you pay.

Over all

This game is not for those that are just casuals gamers. So be warned, this game will steal your soul if you play it over and get sucked into it. It is great to have such diversity in the characters you make and the expansion does add alot more to it, at a cheap price as well.. My final word is this, take your original and trade it in for this version as your characters from the original will work with this game.
