[1.0] - Purpose of this FAQ
Having seen a lot of topics on the forums related to this subject, I thought
I'd create a guide with some tips for anyone trying out the Zombie Genocide
achievement for the first time. Hopefully it should clarify what you have to do
in order to get the achievement and the Real Mega Buster.
//========================================================================//
[2.0] – Introduction
What is it?
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Zombie Genocide achievement is where you have to kill zombies in one
play of the game and get an ending. If you quit the game then your total isn't
carried onto the next game, meaning you have to do it all again. If you die
then when you load up to your previous save point then your total is also
reduced to what it was when you last saved. It doesn’t matter which ending you
get, but as long as you get one then you’ll get the Real Mega Buster in the next
game.
Where can I do this?
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
You can choose to do the Zombie Genocide achievement anywhere in the game, but
the easiest and most common method of doing this is to go to the maintenance
tunnels. Once you get near the tunnels there will be a red car in the carpark,
you can get into this car and drive it down the tunnels and make some easy
kills. Whilst you are in the tunnels there will be a White car and a Delivery
Van that can be used. Look at the map link, referenced below, to find out where
they are situated. Also make sure that you alternate between the 3 as they're
not going to last for a long time.
Getting to the Maintenance Tunnels
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
If you don’t know how to get to the maintenance tunnels then I’ll briefly
explain how. Firstly start the game as you normally would and get to the point
where you have to provide ‘Back-up for Brad’ follow the directions until you
get outside, and here’s where you change. Instead of heading to the route
shown by the pointer arrow, head around north west. Once you get past the
picnic area, keep heading straight and there should be a circular area with a
floral centre. Head straight up and into an alley way and into the car park.
You’re now ready to get into the red car and go down into the maintenance
tunnels. If this doesn’t explain where to go, or if you are confused by my
directions, then there are a couple of YouTube videos which show the same
directions in which you have to take.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
[3.0] – Help and Tips.
Having completed this achievement I know how much of a bore it can be when
you’re spending the majority of your time trying to get the 53,594 kills. So I
have added some tips that will not only help along the way but hopefully cut
down the amount of time taken when trying to complete this achievement.
Obviously the whole thing is going to take the whole 3 Dead Rising days, but
why spend the majority of the time doing one achievement when you can be trying
additional achievements or gaining higher levels either whilst waiting at the
end or throughout this achievement.
- Know the vehicles.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The 3 vehicles that you can use vary in different departments. I have rated
them for the speed in which they can travel, and also the damage they can
sustain before breaking down :
Red car - Speed : 3 / Damage taken : 1
White car - Speed : 2 / Damage taken : 2
Delivery Van - Speed : 1 / Damage taken : 3
So it's best to do the majority of the killing in the White car and the
Delivery Van as they are the most reliable not to break down after hitting a
lot of zombies / trolleys / gas canisters. Also don’t be tempted to use the
motorbike, not matter how fun it seems. It doesn’t take a lot of damage before
it’s wrecked, and also Frank can fall off it quite a few of times leaving you
vulnerable to zombie attacks.
--> Also, don’t drive into any wrecked vehicles as this will cause a lot of
damage to your current vehicle. It may sound obvious but there are times when
I’ve forgotten where I dumped a vehicle and drove around a corner straight into
it - Thanks for the reminder _Hellgiver_
//----------------------------------------------------\\
- Have a set route.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Knowing where you are going and also what vehicle you are going to use can cut
down the amount of time you take whilst trying to accomplish this achievement.
Look at CyberMike’s interactive map. Make sure to click ‘view maintenance
Tunnels’ and click on either genocide route :
http://www.mycheats.com/view/faq/2404/20788/dead_rising/xbox_360
--> I’ve had to remove my previous route due to people trying to hack into my
Photobucket account.
I followed this route, making changes to the white car route (coming back on
the route I had taken with the red car, and then up to the van) and I had 34:31
hours remaining when I completed the achievement. So it's best to know where
you're going, as the first time I attempted this achievement I had no clue as
to where to go and it took me about 5 real hours to get around 20,000 kills.
If you’re new to this achievement then obviously you’re not going to have any
idea about which way to turn and where the majority of the zombies are. An
example would be to drive to the Maintenance Room. When you’re going down
there (in any vehicle) it will be quiet, but as soon as you reach the end
either do a U-turn or reverse back, and the road that you were previously on
will be absolutely covered in zombies, and it is here where you can get the
majority of your kills. But don’t use it as your only area, as it can be quite
frustrating when your car breaks down and you have to run a long way to either
get back into another car or go outside and have your cars spawn back.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
- Take a gun and some food with you.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There's nothing worse than having a couple of 1,000 kills and your car is
wrecked with a whole load of zombies edging towards you. If this should happen
then take a gun with you, and every so often there will be a zombie pushing
around a gas canister. Shoot at the canister for it to explode and take out
any surrounding zombies, but don’t stand too close that you also get the impact
of the blast. The explosion will create a clear running path for you, and
also a couple of kills to add to the total. If in doubt, there is a sub
machine gun in the Maintenance Room, so if you ever run out of ammo, go there.
Always carry some Orange Juice with you, from the beginning they’re located on
the 2nd floor café (Columbian Roastmasters) in Paradise Plaza, as it can
replenish your health by up to 3 bars. Alternatively if you are starting the
game in ‘Mission Free Mode’ (see the FAQ section below) then head to the food
court and put some pizzas in the microwave, these will replenish your health up
to 4 and you’ll also be rewarded with a 2,000PP bonus the first time you heat
up the pizzas. If you ever run out of food in the maintenance tunnels, then
there is a cardboard box containing some meat situated right next to the White
car in the corner.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
- Also use the trolleys.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Random zombies will be pushing a shopping trolley around. These can be ideal
when your car has just broken down. Not only do these help with killing but
also they create a clear path for you to carry on running down. Trolleys don’t
last long so don’t count on them being a substitute for a vehicle as they’ll
simply break and vanish after a short while of killing. If you're on a low
level, using a trolley will speed up Frank as he'll be running faster when
pushing them. Please NOTE, if Frank picks up the trolley as uses it like a
weapon, simply press the Up (or Down) direction on the D-pad for Frank to drop
it and then it can be used for pushing.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
- Save regularly.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Every 5k or 10k (depends on your killing preference) save your game. The sheer
frustration you'll get when getting to a high kill rate and suddenly you either
have a disk read error and the game just crashes or you're killed as a stupid
mistake. You'll only have to do it all over again and this can be annoying.
If you get the maintenance key, you can go through the doorway near the White
car and up the stairs for an easy save point in the bathrooms. Be warned that
if you’re saving halfway during the 2nd day, you’ll probably get the ‘raincoat
cult’ cutscene, to which you can run straight to the bathrooms for a save
point. Although I didn’t do this on my first attempt and got killed to which I
had to load all the way from the last save.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
- Use your levels.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Along with taking food down with you, use your PP levels to your advantage. If
you're low on health but know that you'll be levelling up in a short time, save
your food and just level up. When you gain a level all your health bars will
be fully replenished. This means you can save your food for when you really
need it. But don’t count on your levels all the time, if you really feel like
you’re close to dying then eat/drink something, this game can be unpredictable
at times and it’s easier to play it safe than to waste a lot of kills.
!!! MOST IMPORTANTLY !!!!
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
- Don't forget to get an ending !!
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
A lot of people have been asking where their Real Mega Buster is, but what you
need to do is get the zombie genocide achievement AND get an ending. It doesn’t
matter which ending you get, but if you solely go for this achievement then
you’ll get ending B. Once you get the helicopter scene at the end you should
get a message which says “Achievement unlocked” and once you get the ending
and start playing the game for a second time then the Blaster will be in the
top left corner of the Security Room where Otis is. Although the Blaster only
has 300 ammo, you can get it from the same place throughout the game once it
has ran out.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
Glitch.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I don’t know whether it was my game that was doing this or if this is a common
fault, but whilst driving along in either the Red or White car it would stop
for no reason and not be able to move at all (this isn’t the same as when
your car is broken.) What I found to work was to throw a trolley at the car
which will cause it to judder and bounce making it free to move. If there are
no trolleys around, and you have this skill, then pick up a zombie and do the
exact same thing. This will allow you to get into your car and carry on
running over zombies as usual.
--> ‘It seems this glitch is when an item gets stuck under the vehicle, usually
a piece of meat, and the vehicle will not move until this item is removed.
Sometimes a zombie picks it up naturally, and sometimes it is impossible for
you or a zombie to pick it up, forcing you to pick up a shopping cart to move
the vehicle.’ Credits to Nerthing for e-mailing me this.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
[4.0] - Other achievements
When trying out the zombie genocide achievement there are several more than you
can do whilst down in the maintenance tunnels, as this achievement alone can
take a long time and you can get pretty bored after a while. These other
achievements are:
Group Photo - Head out from the maintenance room and take a photo of the hoard
of zombies roaming about (50 is the target.)
Level Max - Getting to level 50, although this isn't really achievable if you
are starting from level 1.
Strike! – This can be done anywhere in the tunnels where there are groups of
zombies, but the easiest way is to go to the area where you'd normally get into
the Delivery Van, and send a bowling ball into the cluster of zombies. It's
easy to knock down 10 around here.
Stunt Driver - Using the red sports car, drive quickly down the ramp to the
entrance of the maintenance tunnels (best if you reverse back to the wall and
floor it.)
Stunt Rider - Same with Stunt Driver, but instead using the motorbike situated
in the same car park.
Zombie Hunter / Zombie Killer - Of course you'll automatically get these if
you've trying to accomplish the zombie genocide achievement as you'll need to
kill 1,000 / 10,000 zombies anyway.
Zombie Road - Walking on the tops of the zombies. This can be done anywhere as
you don't need to get the 33ft in one go. Try this in the same place as you'd
try for the Strike! achievement as it's just easy with that giant group of
zombies. But anywhere with a group of zombies will suffice.
And finally (if you've got time) try for either the Indoorsman or Outdoorsman
achievement by standing either indoors or outdoors for 24 hours.

[5.0] – Frequently Asked Questions.
[Q] – Can I still get the achievement whilst I’m in ‘Mission Free Mode’?
[A] – Yes you can, all ‘Mission Free Mode’ does is stop you from playing the
game with all the story line scoops. So you’ll still have the 3 days to do
whatever you please, meaning you can still get the Zombie Genocide achievement.
However, I’d still recommend you to play the game in normal mode as you’re not
missing anything important.
[Q] – You’ve mentioned ‘Mission Free Mode’, what is it?
[A] – ‘Mission Free Mode’ was first posted on GameFAQ’s by Deejus, and it is
where you wait for a certain period of time at the beginning of the game (where
the zombies are first let into the mall) before heading up to the stairs. You
will then get the ‘Queen parasite’ cut scene instead of Jessie asking you to
provide ‘Back-up for Brad.’ It was originally believed that you had to kill
600+ zombies in order to get this scene, but it has been proven that it is time
related.
--> ‘I put this to a test and found that mission free mode starts at 5pm. I
counted up from every hour until I got to 5pm, each time restarting the game if
it hasn’t worked.’ Credits to xXRocketJmanXx for e-mailing me this.
[Q] – I have ‘x’ amount of kills and only ‘y’ amount of hours left, can I still
do this achievement?
[A] – It all depends on how well you are killing those zombies. I had 36 game
hours remaining when I actually finished this achievement so I’ve done an
average of how many kills I did per hour. I’ve worked it out that if it took
me 35:29 hours (from 70 hours to 34:31) to kill 53,594 zombies, then on average
I was killing around 1,500 per gaming hour. If you can multiply this average
by the amount of time you have left (leaving out an hour to safely get back to
the heli pad) and add this total to the amount of kills you already have. If
this total is more or roughly around the 53,594 needed then go for it. If it
isn’t nowhere near then I suggest you Save and Quit your game as it’ll only be
wasting your time, when you can be attempting it again.
[Q] – Thanks for the math lesson, but you got it wrong.
[A] – I didn’t really get it wrong, the average was purely based on what I
actually achieved. Some people have actually completed this with 40 gaming
hours remaining, meaning they’re killing an extra 300 zombies per hour than me.
But I didn’t want to mention this, purely because if you multiply your time by
that average (1,700+) it’ll most probably give people false information that
they could narrowly scrape this achievement with what time they have left.
Roughly working it out, if you attempted this achievement with 70 hours
remaining (minus an hour to get the heli pad), the game average would be 776
kills per hour. The only thing with this though is that is can become boring
and it won’t leave you with anything to do but purely killing zombies. So play
around with the figures, but anywhere from 1,000 to 1,700 kills (depends how
good you are) will get you the achievement.
//----------------------------------------------------\\
[6.0] – Real Mega Blaster FAQ
Having seen an influx in questions about the RMB I decided to add a separate
section about the RMB here.
[Q] – Where is it and how much ammo does it have?
[A] – The Real Mega Blaster is situated in the top left corner of the security
room with Otis. It has 300 shots and if it runs out of ammo and breaks then
you can always get it at the same place. Alternatively if you’re heading to
the security room anyway, then drop the Real Mega Blaster outside the air vents
on the roof and head in to collect a new RMB with maximum ammo.
[Q] – If I die and start over, will the blaster still be there?
[A] – Once you have unlocked the blaster, it will be on all future games that
are started on your Dead Rising profile. So once you do the Zombie Genocide
achievement, that’s it, you get the blaster for every game play after.
[Q] – If I don’t make it to the helipad and choose to ‘save and quit’ will I
get the Real Mega Blaster?
[A] – Sadly not. You can only get the RMB with an ending, if you choose to quit
then you won’t get the gun. Even if you don’t make it to the helipad (and
don’t solve all the cases) then you’ll still get an Ending E and the gun.
[Q] – Does everyone die with 1 shot of this?
[A] – Not everyone. All zombies and the convicts take 1 shot to kill. As you
progress through the game then the number of shots to kill the psychopaths
increases. So for example, it takes more shots to kill Cliff than it does to
kill Adam. Also on another note, Special Forces take from 1 to 2 hits.
