---------- 1 Introduction ----------

This guide both compiles many questions and answers on the
forum, and provides general information about the game. It's not
intended as a walkthrough, but I hope you use this to have as
much fun with this game as I have. Spoilers of the game do exist
and are not marked, although I do not feel like they would ruin or
change your game experience.

---------- 2 Credits ----------

I must give credit to OPD No Auto-Restoration Walkthrough -
mjfaqs@live.com for many parts of this guide. Please see his
guide for specific information about not using auto-restore and
walkthrough information.

Credit must also go to everyone on the forum that either posed a
question or answered it. Many answers and tips were found
there. Examples include Sonsaru who provided mission titles.

Thanks go to Solreaver for his review of this guide.

---------- 3 Revision History ----------

Version 1.0: 5/16/2009
Version 1.1: 5/22/2009 (corrected spelling and grammatical errors,
as well as adding names to online coop and minor re-writes)

---------- 4 Tips and Strategies ----------

Most projectile based MS skills (Flare, Sniper Rain, etc.) can
pass through trees, benches, and allies, but not large objects like
buildings or vehicles. Melee based MS skills require clear line
of sight and are blocked by allies.

Cover move is useful for traversing long distances to reach cover
or close in on an enemy. Cover more is also very useful for
gathering loot. Simply cover move to an enemy body normally
out of reach, on your next turn pick up loot from that corpse, then
normal move and pick up loot from another nearby corpse. This
tactic can be followed up by shooting after gathering loot from
both corpses.
Cover move can also keep units out of fire if there is a large
distance between you and enemies as can happen many times
during the game. Instead of charging in with normal move, have
everyone cover move on a unit that goes after the enemies or on
the last enemy. The enemies will go and have no targets/far
away targets, and then your entire team will rush them. Cover
move can be "chained". IE, Cover Move Edward on Keith,
Cover Move Keith on James. When James moves, so will
everyone. This can be disrupted by enemy fire however.

Cover attack is useful for ganging up on a high HP unit until MS
attacks take over. Cover Attack works each time you attack, so
with 4 characters your possibilities are:
--3 Cover Attack, 1 Normal Attack. This has 4 attacks as
normal. Each Cover Attack will attack once after the normal
attack.
--2 Cover Attack, 2 Normal Attack. This will have 6 attacks as
each person on Cover Attack activates on each normal attack.
--1 Cover Attack, 3 Normal Attack. This will have 6 attacks as
the person on Cover Attack activates after each character attacks
normally. This also has the advantage of movement for the most
troops, but the one person on cover attack will run low on ammo
quickly.

Try to get everyone as light-weight as possible - only carry one
weapon and a minimum of ammo and healing, unless a character
needs an extra weapon (sword, pistol, etc.) for their MS skill.
Toward the end of the game, I choose to rely on MS Skills and
had no weapons for most of my team.

Leave one weak enemy around at the end of a stage when
possible, so you can spend time looting dead bodies. Loot as
many enemy bodies as possible - loot is usually randomized. You
can often get items that are not yet sold in stores until several
missions ahead, or not sold at all. If possible, hit this enemy with
slowing attacks or items to minimize damage from him.

Don't be afraid to put non-essential characters in harms way, as
long as Herbert can revive them later. This and loot gathering
are the best uses for generic soldiers.

While possible to play through without generic soldiers, they do
give a few more attacks and if you load them with looted
panzerfausts, will move relatively quickly to pick up loot and
take hits. They do take experience away from the main
characters; however this is quickly corrected by playing the
Armored Recon missions multiple times.

Almost always aim for the centre of a vehicle. That way, even if
you misfire, it's more likely the rocket will hit anyway. This also
applies to dragons and groups of enemies.

Enemy reinforcements always have a significant delay to their
turns, giving you an opportunity to strike first. Don't be afraid to
charge reinforcements expecting 2-3 turns before they move.

Later in the game when everyone has powerful MS skills
unlocked, you should consider relying on grenades, panzerfausts,
and MS attacks for most of your characters. Panzerfausts are
less powerful than Bazookas, and you can throw them away after
one shot, but I tend to play as a pack rat and want to use up the
looted Panzerfausts I get.

You can fire in between two tightly spaced tanks/vehicles and hit
both of them, as long as the rocket coverage is under the tank
treads. Firing at the ground is less accurate than aiming directly
at a target, though. This also works with MS attacks, such as
wolf claw. Always check to see if you can hit a nearby enemy
with an area attack. If you move to the spaces around a large
enemy such as a tank, the tank will light up on spaces you can hit
them in.

Skill levels are tied to a characters level limit. For example, you
will never get Attack Boost to level 4 until the character is at
least lv 35.

Stay away from enemy Magiers so they can't stun your units.
Alternatively, sacrifice generic or non essential characters so the
rest of your team can act and shoot. Auto-restore works
perfectly with this. Loot bodies near the enemies and take any
healing items you can, when the enemies attack, you will auto-
use the healing items and prevent damage to your main units.

Tanks will auto kill you when they run you over. Even with
auto-restore, do not let a tank get close to your essential
characters as it will be game over. (Generally James, Cordellia,
Jude, and Edward.)

Operation Darkness does not have new game plus. When the game
is over, you cannot use the characters in a new game. Also, you
cannot replay missions, expect for the Armored Recon side
missions and Eagles Nest side missions. When you leave the
Armored Recon mission space, you can no longer return.
Replaying these missions is the only way to power level.

Characters that cannot use items/weapons will not see them as
loot. If the enemies has a sniper rifle send Edward, Cynthia, or a
generic female recruit.

Nothing in Online Coop is saved. It just unlocks a random
weapon or item in the supply depot, more powerful weapons
unlock on later stages. You can play online by yourself if you
want access to weapons or the achievement. However you only
get 3 characters, so certain missions will be very difficult.

Some Skills are only unlocked by playing through the AR
missions - "Find Weakness" for instance... So if you want more
Skills, do the Armored Recon missions.

Enemies in Armored Recon missions level up with you. Enemies in
campaign missions are at set levels.

Herbert can revive characters, but only in the battle they died in.
The game ends instantly when a story character dies (Generally
Gallant, Edward, Jude, or Cordelia) giving Herbert no chance to
revive them. Herbert also cannot be allowed to die, as no one can
revive him.

Weight affects turn speed. Colors don't matter, it's only there as
a rough guide. There is little difference between yellow 100
weight and red 101 weight.

Land mines can be found by placing the cursor on them. This
may lead to minutes of hunting around before you move. You
can attack the land mines to detonate them. Enemies with spray
attack may detonate them if your character is nearby. Mines are
usually found around tanks already destroyed in the map.

Attack does affect MS Skills
Base DMG from Flare, lvl 39 Cordelia vs. a lvl 35 Schutze - 6836.
DMG with lvl2 ATK, same opponent - 7914 (~base+16%)
DMG with lvl4 FOC, same opponent - 9305 (~base+36%)

ATTACK * Weapon dmg = total damage

Items/powers stack but only last ~3 full turns. (Turn 1 use item,
turn 2-4 have benefits, turn 5 lose benefits)

Items/Powers work off current total. 100 ATTACK + 2 Stimulants
of +20% does not equal 140, but rather 144. 100 + 20% = 120 +
20% = 144. Lewis's Enrage MS Skill on the same person 3 times can
be devastating this way. 100 + 40% (3 times) = 274 or almost x3
normal attack. Also every character using stimulant or buffs on a
werewolf turns them into a killing machine. It also has the side
benefit of giving them more attacks as they move faster than
other characters.

Transform can be used by Keith and James. It grants 70%
increase to all stats including LUCK, MOVE, even SPEED.
Loses 2% MS after even ally moves (Even himself). When MS
equals 0, character will change back, even out of turn. MS is
taken off the new adjusted total. Although increasing total MS
will not technically keep a werewolf in his alternate form longer,
it will allow more use of MS attacks in the new form without
taking off the duration.
Generally it's advisable to save this for bosses or tough
situations.

Cover Attack and Cover Ambush will set up an area of death as
multiple units will attack any enemy that moves within range.
This works well with Edward, Cynthia, and 2 generic females
armed all with sniper rifles. This will use lots of ammo, but will
eliminate non armored units. I stopped using this tactic toward
end game, when MS attacks did more damage and the maps had more
tanks and dragons.

You cannot move and use MS Attacks, it is sometimes beneficial
to equip a light weapon, gun, or grenades on characters so you
can move and shoot once you start relying more on MS attacks.

Pressing "Y" will bring up an overhead view of the map, so you
can get a better idea of where units are. Although this is tiny and
doesn't tell you much about the units, you get an overview and it
helped negate the horribleness of the camera.

Items
Weapons to Pick Up
The PTRS1941 Custom Rifle: It is an extremely powerful sniper
weapon that can deal notable damage to tanks and pretty much
one-shot most infantry, supernatural or not. On Mission 16, when
the 5th Wave comes, one of the snipers will be carrying this bad
boy. So don't forget to grab it. Also, it has a WT of 150, so
almost everybody will suffer a speed penalty for having it
equipped. Also, a Vampire on Mission 27 is carrying another one
of these. Even though it's the final mission, it's still extremely
helpful.

Sawn-Off Shotgun: Lewis comes with one when he joins your
party on mission 12. Also, in mission 5 you can have him drop
the shotgun onto a corpse and have one of your other members
go pick it up. There's also one on a dead American soldier in the
northeastern corner of the map on Mission 23. A Waffen-SS
Schutze on Mission 07 is also carrying a Shotgun.

PPSh1941SMG: A Vampire in Mission 10 is holding this one.
It's the only one I've found throughout the game.

The Three Blades:
The Muramasa Blade: A Magier in the North group of Mission
11 is carrying this sword.
The Dragonslayer: in Mission 20, a reinforcement Magier is
carrying this weapon. Also, in Mission 22, another Magier is
carrying a Dragonslayer!
The Excalibur: One of the Vampires in the Second Wave of
enemies is carrying this blade meant for a king. Mission 25.

---------- 6 Strategies and Powers by Character ----------

(Note: At the beginning of Mission 06 is when all of the story
characters will have obtained their very first/default MS attacks.
The same goes for Transformation for 2 characters.)

(Note #2: Words in quotes are just the description of the MS
skill. It's not some pre-requirement to use the skill.)

Edward/Main Character:

Bestial Fury: Default MS ability. Area Attack. Uses 9 MS. "Hit
all enemies in an area with a sonic wave."
Crimson Slash: Level 21 MS ability. Single Enemy. Uses 19 MS.
"Fire a lightning arrow." (Two-handed sword required.)
Assail: Level 29 MS ability. Area attack. Uses 22 MS. "Rush at
an area and attack." (Sten SMG required)

Edward is the main character of the story and as such, cannot be
allowed to die. One of the few characters that can use a sniper
rifle, keep him in the back taking out single enemies until you get
Crimson Slash. This attack has decent range and can hurt tanks.
On maps with many enemies, assail has incredible range and
small area of effect, so can potentially take out multiple enemies
while using this ability as a sniper.

Jude:

He doesn't have any MS attacks.

He's a powerful generic soldier and should be treated as such.
Give him powerful one shot weapons or a bazooka. He also
cannot die, so keep him toward the back as well.

Keith Miller:

Wolf Claw: Default MS ability. Area attack. Uses 10 MS. "Slash
at all enemies in an area with claws."
Bestial Fury: Level 21 MS ability. Area attack. Uses 15 MS. "Hit
all enemies in an area with a sonic wave."
Modified Explosives: Level 34 MS ability. Area attack. Uses 30
MS. " Attack all enemies in an area." (Grenade of any type
required.)

Keith is perhaps the most powerful non essential unit. I gave
him bazookas until he got modified explosives. I used the
Transform ability on Keith to great effect by sending him out
front and transforming. Enemies will attack him doing almost
nothing, if he does get below 20%, auto restore will activate and
possibly give him back some MS (through blood plasma or black
crystals). He also is revivable by Herbert if the fight goes very
badly.

Cordellia Blake:

Flare: Default MS ability. Single enemy. Uses 12 MS. "Hurl a
fireball at an enemy."
Blaze Wall: Level 21 MS ability. Area attack. Uses 18 MS.
"Attack all enemies in an area with a wall of fire."
Inferno: Level 27 MS ability. Area attack. Uses 25 MS. "Attack
all enemies in an area with a firestorm."
Song of Taliesin: Level 34 MS ability. Area ability. Uses 6 MS.
"Restore HP and cure status effects of all allies in an area"

Cordellia is your heavy hitter through most of the game. Flare
and Inferno generally one shots most units and can hurt tanks.
Even Blaze Wall will kill lesser units without difficulty. Care
must be taken as she is a character that cannot be allowed to
die. I gave her a Panzerfaust or Bazooka, so she could move into
range and still attack, but then solely used her MS attacks.

James Gallant:

Wolf Claw: Default MS ability. Area attack. Uses 10 MS. "Slash
at all enemies in an area with claws."
Evil Eye: Level 21 MS ability. Single Enemy. Uses 26 MS.
"Glare at an enemy, slowing it down. This causes the affected
enemy to take turns more slowly."
Silent Kill: Level 33 MS ability. Single Enemy. Uses 18 MS.
"Charge forward and strike at an enemy."

James is the second transforming character, making him another
powerhouse. Try to keep him some distance away as he's the last
essential character (unless you count Herbert). Silent Kill has
distance and damage while Evil Eye slows enemies greatly and is
great for dragons. I gave him a heavy machine gun or bazooka
until Silent Kill, where he went weaponless.

Cynthia Rivele:

Sniper Rain: Default MS Ability. Area Attack. Uses 10 MS.
"Shoot at all enemies in an area." (Sniper Rifle required)
Eagle's Eye: Level 20 Ms Ability. Single Enemy. Uses 20 MS.
"Deal Severe damage to an enemy." (Sniper Rifle required.)
Lightning Shot: Level 35 MS Ability. Single Enemy. Uses 30
MS. "Critically wound an enemy." (Sniper Rifle required.)

Everything she does requires a sniper rifle. Toward the end
game, she moved very slowly because she needed a weapon
where most characters did not. Her attacks have great range and
lightning shot does decent damage vs tanks and dragons. Check
to see if sniper rain can get 2 enemies and on low levels give her
plenty of ammo for cover attack/cover ambush combos with
generic females and Edward.

Herbert East:

Revival Experiment: Default MS Ability. Single Ally. Uses 13
MS. "Revive an Ally"
Mystery Vial: Level 10 MS Ability. Single Ally. Uses 4 MS.
"Cure an ally's status effect(s)"
Invocation: Level 22 MS Ability. Area. Uses 6 MS. "Restore HP
to an Ally."
Song of Avalon: Level 32 MS Ability. Area. Uses 48 MS.
"Restore HP and SP to all allies in an area."

As the healer, he can fall behind on levels if you're not careful. I
would use Lewis to boost his attacks and give him a bazooka.
He could quickly catch up on experience by targeting tanks or
groups of units, but this tactic made him move fairly slowly end
game. His Song of Avalon will grant MS back to himself,
making it a cheap ability if you include him in the area. Keep
him alive and in the middle as he needs to stay away from front
lines, but be able to reach people out in front.

Frank Gaunt

Fortify: Default MS Ability. Single Ally. Uses 14 MS. "Raise an
ally's DEF temporarily."
Magni's Fist: Level 14 MS Ability. Single Enemy. Uses 16 MS.
"Hit an enemy with a powerful attack from above."
Morale Boost: Level 28 MS Ability. Area. Uses 20 MS. "Raises
all allies' DEF temporarily."
Mjolnir's Wrath: Level 37 MS Ability. Area attack. Uses 60 MS.
"Smite all enemies in an area with a divine hammer."

I tended to give Frank Bazookas and treat him as a generic male
recruit... until he got Mjolnir's wrath. A large powerful attack
with great range, this attack made Frank quickly out level my
other characters with ease. The game also got considerably
easier once I started over-using this attack. If no enemies are
near, defense boosts to allies are a decent way to avoid wasting
his turn.

Jack the Ripper

He is obtained in Mission 08, when the 3rd wave of enemies
arrive. He's packing a knife.. and that's about it. He has no Auto-
Restore equipped, so be careful about how you use him in this
battle.

Death Slash: Default MS attack. Single Enemy. Uses 10 MS.
"Charge forward and slash an enemy." (bayonet required)
Dancing Dagger: Level 32 MS Ability. Area attack. Uses 20 MS.
"Slash at all enemies in an area." (bayonet required.)

Although his attacks don't affect tanks or dragons much, his
usefulness is not in his power, but his speed. Running circles
around most enemies, I gave him the bayonet for his powers and
a shotgun for times when I needed to move him, perhaps a
grenade or two as well. He's great to send out front and gather
loot or disrupt enemies with well placed grenades. He and Van
Helsing play very similar, and are the only characters that
I gave them extra weapons for usefulness end game.

Elisa Van Helsing

She is obtained in Mission 10, I believe when the totenkopf
spawn. She is packing a sword and some healing items, but she
does not have Auto-Restore. Her MS ability has some distance,
so use that as your means of attack.

Vanquish: Default MS ability. Single Enemy. Uses 10 MS.
"Cleave an enemy, Instant Kill if undead." (Killer Sword
required)
Gouge: Default MS ability. Single Enemy. Uses 12 MS. "Lower
an enemy's HIT, temporarily." (Doesn't work on Vehicles.)
Blade Dance: Level 35 MS ability. Area Attack. Uses 16 MS.
"Slash at all enemies in an area." (Killer Sword required.)

Playing just like Jack, I used her to gather loot and pick off
individuals. Her Vanquish attack will kill skeletons, but not
vampires or other undead bosses. It also has decent reach, but
she doesn't have a good area attack as Blade Dance is very close
range. I gave her a similar layout to Jack with Killer Sword,
Shotgun, and perhaps a grenade.

Lewis Canton

Lewis Canton comes to your help in mission 05 and then again
in mission 12. In mission 12 he's still packing a shotgun and
other items. Except he has no extra ammo or Auto-restore. So, if
he gets nailed with a Panzerfaust or a strong MS attack, you just
lost the game. After mission 12, he joins your party.
If you kill the Needle in Mission 6, Lewis will die after
Mission 16. The only way to prevent that, is to not have
killed the Needle. That's about it.

Quick Draw: Default MS Ability. Area attack. Uses 18 MS. "Fire
dual hand guns at targets in an area." (Only one handgun
required.)
Enrage: Level 25 MS Ability. Singly ally. Uses 10 MS. "Raise an
ally's ATK, temporarily"
Archangel Call: Level 35 MS ability. Area attack. Uses 50 MS.
"Call the Air Force to bomb all enemies in an area." Not usable
when you're inside maps that have no sky.

Lewis should use his Enrage Power to boost low level characters
and allow them to catch up to the rest of the team. Ordinarily,
this would place Lewis behind, but Archangel Call is similar to
Mjolnir's Wrath in terms of range, area, and power. Once this
power was unlocked, I stopped using Lewis as damage as he was
too effective and focused on using him to level out my team. I
gave Lewis the lightest handgun as I never used it outside the
Quick Draw power. I also gave him a bazooka until Archangel
Call became available.

Max Neumann

He is a very powerful Panzer Demon. On Mission 19, when
reinforcements come. There will be one PD unit off to the right
of your spawn area. One of the PDs has a RED shoulder. You
need to shoot him once and hit him with Edward/Main Character.
Using a sniper allows safe distance and good accuracy. He'll run
away. In Mission 21, kill every enemy unit except him and he
will join you at the end.

Assault: Default MS Ability. Area attack. Uses 12 MS. "Attack
all enemies in an area." (HMG required.)
Sonic Slash: Default MS Ability. Single Enemy. Uses 20 MS.
"Send a sonic slash at an enemy." (Two-Handed sword required.)

Max is practically immune to bullets and a decent damage taker.
Assault did not seem as useful as Sonic Slash, as he already
moves slowly and giving him a heavy machine gun made him
unplayable to me. Sonic Slash has ok range and damage, so his
main function is taking hits and picking off enemies. I gave him
the required sword and sometimes a Panzerfaust to move up and
get within range.

Generics

Generics are vastly outshined by the other characters, but they
take hits and gather loot while your main forces do the fighting.
Females can carry sniper rifles, while males typically have
higher move and/or ATTACK. I used 2 females and 1 male
through the entire game and I felt they helped me through the
tough spots.

---------- 7 Valhalla Reports ----------

Mission 13-24 have an enemy of a specific type carrying the
report. The enemy carrying the report is random for each
playthrough, meaning you're going to have to just check every
corpse of that type until you see that yellow paper. Collecting all
12 of these papers allows you to unlock the "EX Missions" aka
"Eagle's Nest" after clearing Mission 26. When the first EX
mission is unlocked, all pages are deleted from your inventory
and you'll unlock the next stages by beating them consecutively.

---------- 8 Achievements ----------

Please see the Achievement Guide by Joe Boland
(jboland@gmail.com) for more detailed information including
how to complete all achievements quickly.

"War Medal (20) - Play online once. This can be accomplished
without a partner. Start a new game in the first Map and play
through with only 3 people on your team.

Purple Heart (35) - Complete the first mission in less than 14
minutes. You can start a new game and just keep trying for this
one.

Africa Star (45) - Find the Muramasa Blade, Dragon Slayer and
Excaliber weapons. These are secret swords that have to be
collected from certain enemies in certain missions. There are
only 1-2 chances in the entire game to get them, although some
people managed to get them as rewards for online play too.

Soldier's Medal (65) - Collect Valhalla Orders 1 - 12. A specific
solider in each stage carries one of these from around mission 13
onward. You need *all* of these to get into the EX Missions near
the end of the game, miss one and you can't go back for it +
you'll lose access to over 300 achievement points.

Silver Star (70) - Finish missions 1 - 27.

Distinguished Service Cross (80) - Finish all 15 Armored Recon
(AR) missions.

Military Cross (90) - Finish all missions.

Medal of Honor (95) - Finish stage 27 (final stage) with all AR
and all EX missions also clear.

Victoria Cross (100) - Finish Mission 1 - 27 (just the story
missions) within 35 hours. "
