The Animus allows you too relive the lives of your ancestors, but prolonged exposure seems to do much more, linking you, pulling parts of you into your ancestor and giving parts of your ancestor to you. Desmond has been in the Animus enough to be experiencing the side effects. What is the writing all about? Most of the writing you will notice is simply some illegible scrawling, and all the study I can put into it shows no real facts about their meaning. In your room you will notice a great deal of Kanji and Hiragana (Some traces of Katakana might be found, yet to be confirmed), is from a prior subject that seems to have been completely fused with his ancestor, and as a result lost his mind. The pictures are from many religions and places in history, probably left there by the other subjects before you to serve as a hint, or warning. I have entered the abyss and never returned? Well, this one is obvious when given some thought. “I have entered the abyss and never returned” is talking about the Animus's side effect. Part of his mind is trapped in his ancestor, and part of his ancestor is trapped in him.
