What counts as "killing" Cohen?

In Fort Frolic, I let him talk and open the glass case with the tonic in it after finishing the masterpiece. After that, I shot him, and he vanished like a Houdini Splicer.
I noticed in an FAQ that you can get the "Irony" Achievement in Fort Frolic if you choose to kill him there, but I also read that if he dies then, I can't get all the weapon upgrades. Since he didn't leave a corpse, is he still alive?

He didn't appear again is why I figured he wasn't dead. You'd figure he'd show up to fight again though. Oh well. Thanks guys.

No if you shoot him then you can't get all the weapon upgrades 'cause one of the PttP machine is in his place, and u wont get the "enter cohen secret place"(or something like that) achievement.

And maybe he was appearing but in other room or upstair, the fort frolic main area its a big place.

Answer

He should have re-appeared like a normal houdini splicer and fought with you. If he didn't the game must have glitched.
