So far i cant seem to be able to tell what happens other than you go back to your tower
You have the answer already..."you go back to your tower". That is what happens. You respawn in the tower, lose whatever minions you had when you died, and your progress is from the last checkpoint/auto-save.
Did you expect something different than respawning to happen when you died?
