Sliding as Proto Man works the same way in Mega Man 9 as it does making Mega Man slide in Mega Man 3-8 and Mega Man & Bass:
Hold Down on the directional pad, then press the Jump button.

statusHold down and press the jump button to slide. In case you didn't know, you can also hold the fire button to charge up your shots as Proto Man; if you're in the air but not shooting, he also holds out his shield which will reflect projectiles; and even though he can normally only have two shots on screen at a time unlike Mega Man's 3, you can have 3 shots onscreen at a time if you've got the Proto Coil or Proto Jet equipped.
