Aegis Wing

Review by StarOceaner

"Aegis Wing soars onto the Xbox Live Arcade, and it's free!"

Released in May 2007, Aegis Wing is a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up game that came out for free on the Xbox Live Arcade. The single player mode is highly disappointing, but the multiplayer somewhat makes up for it.

You take control of a small ship. You have to move it up, down, left, or right as the camera continuously moves right a little. You'll encounter enemies that will fire and you, and you're only option is to fire back. At the end of every level, there is a boss battle, but all the bosses look the same. The only significant difference is that each boss has a different tactic, and you have to defeat several different ways.

During the course of the game you'll pick up several power ups which will allow you to press the B button on your Xbox 360 controller and fire a powerful weapon at them. And A just shoots your regular weapon. Your regular weapon never runs out of ammunition, however the power ups do, so you have to be careful with your bullets.

Aegis Wing has some pretty nice graphics. The backgrounds are all 3D, and while you cannot interact with them, you certain can admire them. But everything is so small in this game that you'll have no idea where your ship is and you'll get killed.

Sound really isn't an issue in Aegis Wing. You get a nice little heroic background music mixed in with lasers being fired all over the place, and explosions heard around the world.

The Single Player campaign is really bad and boring. The fact that there is only one of you and hundreds of them means big trouble. However, when you play multiplayer, you can play with three other people and team up to finish the game. Multiplayer makes the game more enjoyable, but only for a few minutes.

In multiplayer, it's easier to take down large numbers of enemies, and you can combine all four ships to make a combined ship. Only one person gets to control the movement of the ship, and all four get to fire at enemies. This is enjoyable, but gets repetitive and you wish you had more.

Overall Aegis Wing has a fun multiplayer, and an absolutely terrible single player. Sound is great, and so are the graphics, but everything else is just plain boring. Achievement points are there if you want them, but you'll have an easier time obtaining them during multiplayer than you will in Single Player.
