Dark Sector
Review by Dingle324
"Bloody fun (Literally)"
Dark sector was originally announced in 2004, by Digital extremes. I'm not going to get into a full in-depth explanation of how the game was made and why it took so long to create, I'm just going to get on with the game.
Story: Let me start of by saying this, if you are looking for a game with an in-depth storyline that will keep you on your feet this isn't the game for you. The storyline in the game is basically you're a special-ops agent sent on a mission, and during this mission you get infected and gain super-natural powers. I can't say very much more without spoiling the game, but all you need to know is that it not a very well developed storyline.
Graphics/sound: The graphics and sound in this game are very... gory. The graphics basically resemble gears of war (same colouring and textures, as well as the Over-the-shoulder view) except a lot bloodier. This is the same idea with the sound, if you like hearing people's legs getting ripped off, then you should probably check this out. Basically its gears of war polished a bit more, and a bunch of blood thrown in.
Gameplay: Now this is what I love about this game. What could be more fun than ripping a guy's head off with a sharp edged boomerang/glaive? Basically you have this weapon called a glaive, and you go around throwing it at people slicing of different parts of their body. There are multiple things you can do with the glaive such as you can go into a view where you guide it around with the analog stick; you can throw it into fire, ice, and electricity and gain the element of it. Later in the game you unlock other powers that are pretty sweet but I don't want to ruin the surprise. But for all you people who enjoy a nice shoot-em-up you can still whip out your variety of guns and blast some people to bits. Personally the shotgun in the game takes the cake for the coolest shotgun of all time. It rips peoples body's in half.... come on what better than that.
The game also has the same cover system as gears of war (A to run/take cover/roll), except for some reason it does not work as well. A lot of the time you try to roll away from a grenade and end up taking cover. Also it lacks the ability to blind fire and crouch, which would have both been a plus.
Multiplayer: I'm a big fan of online games so I decided to include this section. This game has two online modes:
Infection- One person has the power (Glaive and other things) and is against however many people are in the game. The opposing team is a bunch of troopers with guns. Whichever trooper kills the guy with the power gets the power next round.
Epidemic- Two teams, each team has one guy with the power, and the rest of the people on the team are troopers. Whoever kills the opposing team's power holder becomes the power holder of their team next round.
The power holder is incredibly powerful and hard to kill, but if you work together with your team you can do it. This game does have a little bit of lag and has only 5 maps. But still the online is lots of fun due to the fact that most of the community is nice, and it's fun to be the holder of the power.
Replay: The story mode of this game take's people around 10-20 hours depending on how much time you spend looking for stuff. The online I find very fun, but will not hold my interest as long as some other games. If the game starts falling out of view and no one play online you can always play multiplayer with bots because due to the dead online community.
Buy/Rent: I would say rent first, and then if you like buy it. But if this game goes doe to $40- it would defiantly be worth the money.
