"Ahem...Will the Game of the Year please stand up?"
Sharp and stunning. Can't get any prettier than this. Each person in the game has his/her own unique looks and way of life. Everything in the game is pretty. Everything from a match to a soda can are done in explicit detail. You can even see the veins on Ryo's hand when reading something or talking on the phone. Little extra's and details like this make a game stand out.
The voice acting isn't the best, but which games voice acting has really stood out? Beautiful music adds life and originality to this masterpiece. Each person in the game has his/her own unique voice. None of the voices are really annoying which also makes the game more enjoyable. I hate having to listen to squeaky or weird voices in a game. What's also cool, is you can listen to music you aquired in the game on your Shenmue Passport. You can also play previous FMV's that you have seen throughout the game on the Passport.
The control is superb throughout the game, but there is a little problem in FREE battles. The camera angle sometimes gets annoying, but it's very minor. Other than that, the control is excellent. You control Ryo by using the D-pad, and you look around by using the control stick. During the FREE battle however, the controls change. You'll see what I'm talking about when you play the game. Overall, control is tight, crisp, and responsive.
Fun Factor: Depends
Why does it depend? If you like Adventure/Action games, this game should be a perfect 10. However, if you are unsure, rent the game and try it out. Some hate it, most love it. It all depends what kind of genre you like most. I love the game and I have friends who dislike it, so again, if you're unsure then rent the game first.
This game is a masterpiece that should be played by any and every Dreamcast owner. The addicting story line alone will draw you in and make you want to keep playing. Everything in this game fits it perfectly. The battle system, QTE's, and FMV's make this game a stand-alone genre. The originality this game has is remarkable and the uniqueness of it will make you want to come back for more. Will the game of the year please stand up?
