    This final version of this long-lived FAQ is intended for Soul Calibur fans 
    who began by playing the Dreamcast home version of the game and who wish to 
    play the arcade version. There are numerous differences between the two. 
    Many are merely graphical, but new moves were added in the home version, 
    and many more existing moves were tweaked.
    
    Those still playing SC in arcades are likely to be experienced, expert players,
    so you don't need an unfortunate handicap like trying to use a favorite move 
    that isn't available! Learn to play around the loss with this FAQ!

    I. GENERAL KEY AND CONVENTIONS
    
    A. COMMAND CONVENTIONS
    ======================================
    (Button commands are always in CAPS)
    A: horizontal slash. Usually hits high.
    B: vertical slash. Hits mid.
    K: Kick.
    
    (Joystick commands are always in lowercase)
     f: tap forward
     b: tap back
     u: tap up
     d: tap down
    uf: tap diagonally between up-forward
    df: tap diagonally between down-forward
    ub: tap diagonally between up-back
    db: tap diagonally between down and back
     n: neutral; no direction
    qcf: quarter circle forward, (Fireball motion)
    qcb: quarter circle back, starting at down and ending back; (bka the 
         Hurricane Kick motion)
    hcf: half circle forward, from back to down and ending forward; (bka the 
         Yoga Flame motion)
    hcb: half circle back, from forward to down and ending back; (bka the 
         Reverse Yoga Flame motion)
    
    [ ]: this means to hold the direction or button inside the brackets.
      r: Release a button being held.
     ~ : the command following this should be done real fast, *right* after 
    the preceding one.
      /: this means "or." (ex: u/d+B either up or down plus B will work.)
      =: the move following this may be added after the preceding move above it. 
    
    B. Hit conventions
    ======================================
    h: the move must be blocked high, but can be ducked completely.
    m: the moves hits mid. Must be blocked standing up. Duckers will be hit.
    l: The move hits low. Must be blocked low or jumped over.
    *: the move preceding this symbol will stagger a blocking foe. If on 
    either end of a string (Ex: *hhh*), all moves will stagger.
    !: this move is unblockable!
    Capital M: This is a Special mid hit. Unlike most m attacks, it can be 
    blocked crouching.
    
    C. Abbreviations and Terms
    ========================================
    8: 8 Way Run (free walking). Some moves only work from this position.
    8WR: Alternate abbreviation for 8 Way Run.
    BW: Back to opponent. Some moves only work if you or foe is in this position.
    CD: this move is a Crouch Dash. Ducks high attacks.
    CH: Counterhit. Interrupting a foe's moves offers greater damage and special 
    properties to your own, such as making strings comboable.
    CLN: Clean Hit. 
    DLY: this move is delayable-i.e. you can pause before entering a command 
    instead of committing to the whole thing at the outset.
    F: Far. Usually affects damage.
    FC: Fully Crouched. Some moves can only be done from this position.
    FD: Lying Face Down, regardless of position.
    FDF: Lying Face Down, Feet toward enemy.
    FDH: Lying Face Down, Head toward enemy.
    GH: Ground Hit. This move will hit a fully prone enemy. (See note below).
    GI: Guard Impact. Deflects or parries attacks.
    LD: Lyuing Down on back, regardless of position.
    LDF: Lying Down on back, Feet toward enemy.
    LDH: Lying Down on back, Head toward enemy.
    N: Near. Usually affects damage.
    RC: This move recovers crouching. Any While Standing (WS) attack will link.
    RO: Ring Out; this move can often ring out an opponent near the edge.
    SCU: Spirit Charge Unblockable. This move is unblockable (but GI-able) after 
         a Spirit Charge.
    SS: Sidestep move. Dodges most vertical attacks.
    TH: Throw
    WS: While Standing. Move must be done while rising from a crouched position.
    1st, 2nd, 3rd (etc): Denotes which hit of the move has an accompanying effect.
    
    GENERAL NOTE ON GROUND HITS: any low attack will hit a rising opponent who has 
    not opted to wakeup blocking low. However, some low moves will miss a victim 
    lying perfectly still. For this reason, only moves that are guaranteed to hit 
    a prone target regardless of their size are marked as ground hits (GH).
    
    D. STUNS (ONLY occur if you score a Counterhit [CH])
    ===================================================
    BDS: Bound stun; victim bounces off ground into air. Ends LDF.
    CPS: Crumple stun. Victim slowly falls to the ground a bit faster than DO. 
         Ends FDH. Escape: G right before touching the floor.
    DOS: Double Over Stun, victim grabs gut and slowly falls over. Ends FDH. 
         Escape: G at moment of falling.
    FBS: Fall Back Stun. Victim slowly topples over on back. Ends LDF. 
         Escape: G while falling. 
    HFS: "Hot Foot" Stun. Victim holds hurt foot, hopping on the other before falling.
    LCS: Lift crumple stun. Victim gets knocked up a bit before crumpling 
         as in C Stun. Ends FDH.
    SPS: Spin stun. Victim spins in place twice for a full 40-60 frames.

    II. GENERAL VARIATIONS FROM DREAMCAST VERSION:
    --Backward jump attacks will not knockdown in Dreamcast version, but may in 
    Arcade. Also, the damage remains constant in Arcade, regardless of the direction 
    jumped or whether jumping from a [G] position.
    --8-Way Run cannot be buffered in Arcade as in Dreamcast.
    --In general, Spirit Charge Unblockables (SCU) in the Arcade are less numerous 
    but way stronger than on DC, as their original purpose was for defeating overly 
    defensive players (read: turtles)
    --Voice in the arcade version is limited to yells, so certain verbal cues that 
    may telegraph certain moves on DC will be changed or missing.
    --However, standard G+A and G+B throws are sometimes telegraphed by a distinctive 
    yell in the Arcade, so an alert player can learn to break them correctly.
    --Holding Start during stage selection will give you a transparent character 
    instead of the metallic ones on DC. This can be an (unfair) advantage in the 
    hands of highly skilled players, especially in darkly-lit stages.

    Astaroth gained no new moves in the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur and
    didn't need any. Despite his low speed, Astaroth is definitely one of the 
    best characters on either incarnation. Opponents will attempt to overwhelm 
    Astaroth with speed. Use the GI deflects and parries heavily to set up Asta's 
    deadly throwing game.

    WIN POSES
    G: Twirls axe heavily overhead, then slashes the blade into the floor 
    viciously. Power version (hold stick up) adds an "unblockable lightning" 
    pause before the slash.
    A: Beats chest once, twice, three times, then raises a fist. Each action 
    is accompanied by a different color flash and an explosion. Power version
    (hold stick left/right) adds a lightning strike to each beat.
    B: Twirls axe behind his back, chops either side of an imaginary enemy's 
    head. Power version (stick down) adds white motion trails in twirl.
    K: Twirls axe and slams the head on the ground behind him, holding the 
    handle upright and planting a boot on the blade. Lighting crackles through 
    him. No power variation.

    Is not in the Arcade version at all. So learn some characters other than the

    12% more damage per move than the characters he copies.
    
    MOVES
    Edge Master mimics the moves of a random character, changing each round. As 
    Kilik/MiNa, though, he has a unique variation:

    Despite the fact that Hwang got a fair amount of tweaking for Dreamcast, he's 
    a very effective character in the Arcade version. He shares many of Xianghua's 
    evasive moves while added a touch more range (esp. in throwing) and his own 
    far more powerful moves. The result is a fighter with a graceful yet brutally 
    effective style.

    Kilik was quite improved in the DC version, so you have an uphill battle 
    using him as well in the Arcade. Kilik is an odd character in that he's one 
    of the smaller ones, but his weapon makes him play more like the big guys 
    like Astaroth or Seigfried. Moreover, his very open stance makes him surprisingly 
    easy to hit at mid range. His chief advantages are his strong juggle ability, 
    long range pokes and excellent fake game.

    Lizardman is one of the most hated characters in Soul Calibur because he's 
    strong almost to the point of being overpowered. Playing similarly to Sophitia, 
    he has most of her strengths (good speed and CH ability) while lacking her 
    main disadvantage, short range. There's almost no other character better at 
    forcing the ringout since many of his best moves are good at herding opponents 
    to and over the edge. He needed few modifications in the home translation.

    Maxi only gained two new moves and one SCU on DC, while losing four of the 
    latter. If any character needed no power-up, it was Maxi. He's thought by 
    many to be the best, due to his great stagger and RO ability, his superb 
    change-up ability, and overall priority. He's not quite as fast as his staggers 
    make him seem, and he has a very steep learning curve. But rest assured that 
    DC skills will transfer back to the Arcade pretty smoothly. :)

    Did I say Lizardman was the most hated SC character? He's got competition 
    for the role in Mitsurugi. Mitsu is actually one of the most popular fighters. 
    He has many balanced strengths and has no real weakness. Where he shines is 
    when he's used in a style called "roaching." 
       A roach tries to knock down his opponent, then harass him with a tricky 
    but limited mix of wakeup moves. Mitsurugi has a set of moves that seem tailor-
    made for roaching; a good player can win the majority of his damage on a 
    downed opponent. This is why Mitsu is hated by certain players and loved by 
    others.
       Basically, in the arcade is where roaches are made and thrive. The better 
    graphics of the DC version allow sharp players to see through roach tricks 
    much more easily than in the lower-resolution arcade version, where Mitsurugi 
    roaches tend to dominate.

    On Dreamcast, Rock was given much improvement on his already deadly throwing 
    game with an unGI-able grab and the ability to switch up his normal throws. 
    You'll also miss his 3-hit string in the arcade. Aside from those tweaks, 
    Rock is quite formidable in his original arcade form. He's a serious RO threat, 
    esp. with powerful SCU moves he lost on DC. "Rock" your opponents' world with

    Similar to Kilik, MiNa is somewhat less effective in the arcade version. 
    She loses many FC options and a number of new moves while not gaining any 
    significant SCU moves. Along with her lack of Kilik's powerful juggles and 
    an abysmal throw range, MiNa practically bottoms out the roster in terms of 
    potential. However, she does boast more low moves than any other character 
    and the strongest overall unblockable (Yoshi's suicide is stronger, but it 
    damages himself nearly as much).

    In addition to a lot of new moves, Yoshi got a lot of minor changes in DC. 
    Most notably, his Pogo and Suicide moves aren't as versatile in Arcade. But

    hardly miss those other moves. Everything that really makes Yoshimitsu deadly
