Do I need the shoulder buttons to play this game?

I'm thinking of buying this game, but my DS Lite shoulder buttons don't work. Can I play this game without the shoulder buttons?

You will need them to use some skills. I'm like halfway through the game and I know for a fact that you will need one of Jake's skills to progress through the second dungeon.
