About Me
--------

Hi, my name is TheFanBoyDestroyer but in most of the gaming world, I'm
known as Spirit. I decided to write this Guide shortly after E3 and have
since been tinkering on it ever since. This is my first Guide and
hopefully will be the first of many more to come. Please email me with
comments, requests and any mistakes you may pick up on. I am more that
happy to see constructive critsism. I am also 18 years old and have
been playing video games since as long as I can remember. This is my
first attempt at an FAQ so bare with me.

About this Guide
----------------

Work started on this Guide shortly after E3. With the release of the game
I have been labouring over getting everything sorted and neatly grouped
up so it represents at least some form of Walkthrough/ FAQ. What you
see now is the collective gathering of information over 6 months and
now the addition of all the goodies from the game itself. I will
continue to work on this FAQ for the next month.

-------------
Power Sliding
-------------

Power sliding is a feature already previously used in the Mario Kart
series and it has once again mades it's return. The feature is quite
easy to use once mastered, a requires very little skill at all.

To achieve a power slide it is best to wait until you come to a corner.
It can be down on wide straights but poor handling will leave you in
the mud. As you near a corner, tap and hold R to jump and then slide.
To preform the power sliding, move the directional pads left and right,
depending on which way you are turning. A blue spark should light up
under the cars tyres if you are doing things right. Repeat so the tyres
spark an orange colour and then either let loose for a quick boost of
speed or hold to inch around the corner and then achieve the boost of
speed.

------------
Rocket Start
------------

This is achieved by holding the Acceleration button as the countdown
reaches 2 and the number stops expanding. If done correctly, the Rocket
Start will give you a boost of speed at the begining of the race.

--------------
Screen Display
--------------

The top screen features the action of Mario Kart DS. Using a similar
HUD to recent Mario Kart titles, speed, weapon and Lap will be
displayed in the Top Screen.
The bottom screen (Touch Screen) will feature a detailed real-time map
of the course which functions similia to a rear view mirror. Also
featured on the bottom screen is the course Leaderboard.

Below is what the in game screen will look like as well as a description
of each parts significance.

____________

-----------
Item Box:
-----------

The item box will display the current item you have in possession. If you
are dragging an item such as a banana or green shell the item will leave
the item box and under can fill it.

-----------
Current Lap:
-----------

The Lap section functions as two things. The first, it display the number
of laps in any given track. Normally most of them will be a standard 3
but the odd one like Baby Park will display 5. The other function is to
display what number lap you are currently on. The latter is display first
while the number of total laps displayed last.

-----------
Race Screen:
-----------

The race screen like all Mario Kart titles before it displays the bulk
of the action. The character in which you have chosen will be located in
this section of the screen during races and controlled depending on whats
happening in this part of the screen.

-----------
Current Position:
-----------

This displays your current position. It will display as different colours
depending on your position in the race. Silver for first and gradually
making it's way to dark Red for last.

-----------
Leaderboard:
-----------

The leaderboard displays the current position of all the racers in the
current race. In Grand Prix and Battle Modes it will display from 1-8.
During Wi-fi matches it will display from 1-4. Depending on the number
of players in local matches it will display the corresponding number of
racers.

-----------
Time:
-----------

In normal Grand Prix, local and wifi games this will count upwards to
display the amount of time it took you took complete any given track. In
some Mission Run levels the time will count down from a pre-determined
time.

-----------
Map Screen:
-----------

The Map Screen has two functions. Close up and map view. The Close Up
view displays your character and rivals near by, showing you a small
section of the overall map so you can see what is going on close to you.
The map view spans out to show an entire view of the map, showing where
all racers currently are. This can be good to seeing how far infront or
behind you are, but makes it difficult to see oncoming items if your in
close vicinity to your oppenents.

Being the first track in the entire game you should expect this track
to be simple, easy and a good way to start your Grand Prix. The corners
are long and allow for some quick power sliding and is easy to negoiate
being quite long and quite wide.

The track starts near with a long stretch so a quick Rocket Start will
give you a good head start. The track then bends left but do not power
slide right away. Wait until your about halfway through the bend before
power sliding. You can choose to hold the powerslide as you go around
the bend or quickly use two power slides, either will work.

The road from here is narrow and straight and a number of item boxes are
placed at either end. The track then bend right, so again, powerslide
around once to stick closer to the edge or power slide twice. From here
it's a quick dash to the finish line. Rinse and repeat for the next two
laps.

The track is very wide so it is easy to avoid banana's and shells. It
can be harder to catch up at times however unless you recieve a good
item to catch up with the leaders.

Yoshi falls is located in the middle of some exotic mountains with
multiple waterfalls cascading down the Mountains side. The track is
simple enough with multiple speed boosts covered the track and speed
boost an easy thing to master. The waterfalls allow for a quicker
corner but can wash you away if your not careful enough. Also using
the waterfall route you will miss out on potential speed boosts that
could give you the advantage but taking the dangerous waterfall route
is shorter than taking the other.

You start the race heading north on a small straight. From here you can
either go above along the small bridge for some items, or take a shorter
route through the waterfall. I suggest getting an item early on in
the race, so take the longer route. From here you will weave right
towards another bridge and waterfall. The waterfall here is quite long
and can only be tackled quickly by using a star or mushroom. Taking
this route without these items will slow you down. Take the bridge for
some speed boosts.

The track then weaves a few times and continues going right. Alot of
power sliding is recommended at this stage. You the come across a
number of power boosts. Use these to take you to the last of the three
waterfalls. Use a quick succession of power sliding boosts on the speed
boosts after the waterfall for a quick dash home.

Inspired from the game that wasn't so successful, Luigi's Mansion starts
from outside the mansion that was made famous, leads inside for a few
seconds and then back out again. The nice addition to the track is
trees that will move to hinder your route and get in the road when
you least expect it. The off track sections make for some quick short
cuts but for the characters with poor off road will slow them down quite
alot. A very easy map to power slide on where multiple slides can
be done in multiple locations.

Desert Hills is a windy track with a number of surprises along the way.
Some of these surprises include fireballs that fall from the sky to

7- Missions
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

At the begining of the game there are 6 worlds, 8 levels in each and a
boss at the end of each world. After all 6 have been completed with a
certain star rating, more are unlockable. I will include strategies as
soon as possible for each mission.

At the end of each Mission you are awarded with a rank level. The ranks
are,

3 Stars (XXX)
2 Stars (XX)
1 Star (X)
A
B
C
D

3 Stars is the highest ranking that is awarded and D is the lowest. The
strategies listed below are ways in which to recieve a 3 star rating.
Difficulty of reaching this rating is also listed below. I will rank the
difficulty with the following ratings.

Too Easy!
--------

Mission and 3 star rating is simple to recieve.

Easy
----

Mission is easy and requires little to no skill.

Normal
------

The Mission requires some skill for a 3 star rating.

Touchy!
------

Mission requires skill and may prove difficult.

Hard
----

3 star rating is hard to get and awesome skill will be required.

Ouch!
-----

3 star rating is near impossible and requires god-like skills.

-------
World 1
-------

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-1
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Drive through all 5 numbered gates in order!
Character: Toad
Difficulty: Easy
------------------------------------------------

To get a 3 Star rating firstly get a boost at the start. Then after
clearing the first tyre use the mushroom to blast through the next.
Do this on the third and fourth as well, ensuring that you do not hit
the tyres at all. Pass through the last with at least 18 seconds to
spare.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-2
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Collect all 15 coins!
Character: Peach
Difficulty: Normal
------------------------------------------------

Just go steady and easy in this one. Collect the coins and do not miss
a single one, do not go back for one if you miss it, restart if thats
the case. To get a 3 star rating, finish with at least over 18.5 seconds
left on the clock. Do not bother drifting as it may result in you
missing one of the coins.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-3
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Destroy all 10 item boxes!
Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Easy
------------------------------------------------

This one is too easy. Just use the mushrooms that the boxes give to you
and use the speed boosts on the track. A 3 star rating is easy to
accomplish.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-4
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Get the Star and use it to hit 5 Cheep Cheeps!
Character: Wario
Difficulty: Normal
------------------------------------------------

If your not careful this Mission can get a little frustrating. Take it
slow and easy and you should be able to take out the fish with the use
of only one star. Destroy them in order as well so you don't have to
got back for any which will affect your time and overall rank.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-5
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Drive through all 6 numbered games in order!
Character: Toad
Difficulty: Easy
------------------------------------------------

This mission is played on the Battle Track, Nintendo DS. The aim is to
simply drive through 6 tyres that are scattered across this Battle Map.
It is quite easy to achieve a 2 star rating on this mission if you
simply drive through all the tyres but to achieve a 3 star I suggest
using the power sliding technique right after tyre one so you blast
right through tyre two. Get over 18 seconds remaining for 3 stars.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-6
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Drive out of the mansion... backwards!
Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Too Easy!
------------------------------------------------

This is probably the easiest of all of the missions in world one. You
start at one end of the mansion from the track "Luigi Mansion" and must
drive to the other only using the reverse button. Just stick close to
the walls and drive straight for the end. A 3 star rating should be as
easy to get as pie.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-7
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Collect all 20 coins!
Character: Donkey Kong
Difficulty: Easy
------------------------------------------------

Played on a portion of the Moo Moo Farm track you have to collect over
20 coins with three mushrooms at the start to give you an extra boost
of speed. The first group of coins you should simply use the mushroom
boosts to collect and then as you come to the Monty Moles, use a power
slide around the corner to speed up to the last coins.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-8
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Preform 4 power-slide turbo boosts in 1 lap!
Character: Mario
Difficulty: Touchy!
------------------------------------------------

This mission does prove difficult simply because of the fact that it
says only four power slides are required but to achieve a 3 star rating
you'll need to do at least 6. Use each corner to preform your power
slides as normal and stick as close to the edges of the track as
possible. Keeping that in mind if you hit the dirt, restart. Mission
must be completed with 19 second remaining for a 3 star rank.

- - - - - - -
Mission 1-B
- - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------
Description: Use mushrooms to crash into the Big Bully and knock him
off the stage
Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Easy
------------------------------------------------

In the first of many boss battles, you are bitted against Big Bully
of which we all know and love from Super Mario 64. This time, you are
on a large platform surrounded by water and Big Bully is standing in
the middle, as angry as ever. What I did to achieve the 3 star rating,
use a rocket start and blast past him. He will charge to where you
previously were, leaving himself open near the water. Quickly hit the
item box that was behind him, spin around and use mushrooms to blast
him into the water. If done properly, it should take less than 10
seconds.

In every Mario Kart title, Items have been featured and in every new
title, fresher and more innovative items have been included. Mario Kart
DS is no exception, a recent interview with Hideki Konno confirming
that they are incorporating “DS- original items”. The first announced

Worldwide:
---------

Compete against anyone, anywhere, anytime. In this option you will be
pitted against 3 other players from anywhere in the world, in a 4 race
Grand Prix.

3 other players of the same skill level. This allows for a more
competitive race for the competitive players.

--------
Regional:
--------

In this option you can play against other players from the same country
or even state as yourself. This allows you to play closer to home and
allows you to challenge people from your country.

-------
Friends:
-------

In this option, friends are randomly selected from your friends list and
you are then pitted against one another. This can be helpful for
compititions, old rivallaries or even just for some fun.
