"So Gorgeous, Yet So Short..."
This is definitely a mixed bag. You can tell that the people who worked on this worked HARD. It probably cost them blood, sweat and tears. On the other hand, has all the hard work gone to waste? Find out in this review.
There is no story. There's not even a story in the instruction manual besides "The other ships are EVIL. Blow 'em up good." This takes away a lot of the motivation to play through it.
Simply put, these are the BEST 3D graphics available on the DS at this time. Unlocking 3D ship models in challenge mode will show you how amazingly detailed these things are, even at a half of their size (their size in the actual game).
Sound and Music: 5/10
The sound is appropriate for each weapon, but each sound gets pretty repetitive after a while. The same thing could be said about the music, but add some genericness to the mix,
This game plays like any other vertical shooter out there, which isn't a bad thing. It's actually really fun at the core. There are flurries of hard-to-dodge beams and lasers, many continuous waves of enemy ships, and gigantic, tough bosses with obvious weak points (made obvious thanks to the redundant scan button on the bottom screen, which just shows the weak points in red). One of the game's main problems is the touch screen element: You HAVE to use the bottom screen to switch weapons, which means slowing down the game-induced adrenaline rush, take your stylus, click on the icon, and put it back. If you're lucky, you won't die by accident. Another thing is the crappy scoring system, which rewards you for coins you picked up, the amount of times you DIDN'T fire your gun, etc. Your score can be hampered by using too many smart bombs and using a tractor beam-like device to rake in the coinage without moving around. There are many kinks to work out and it's incredibly unfair. Yet another problem is the fact that you automatically lose a life upon impact, considering that this is a modern shooter with a life bar. Call me picky, but I can't tell you how many times an enemy came up from behind me and crashed into me kamikaze style. Now the BIGGEST problem is the game's length: It can be beaten in an hour. Literally. Sure, the game has replay value what with online scoreboards at the official website and a challenge mode to unlock music tracks, ship models and concept art, but if the meat of the game is so lacking, then why bother?
Get it only if you are looking for eye candy, if you love unlockables, or if you are a vertical shooter addict.
