"A fun game for the DS"
Rayman DS is a port of the N64 game Rayman 2: The Great Escape. It is a standard platformer/adventure game with good graphics and gameplay.
The story begins with the Robopirates splitting up all the yellow lums, causing chaos to the world. You then see Rayman's friend Globox being dragged into a cell with Rayman. The idea of the games is to put all the lums back together, restoring peace to the world. I rated this a 6/10 because of low originality in the story.
You play as Rayman obviously, and the game is similar to other platforming/adventure games. The game is a good length, and the levels are detailed, colorful, and fun. Rayman has several different abilities, such as shooting balls of energy out of his fists and using a helicopter on his head. He also has several allies who will help you out during the game.
The controls are good, making this an easy game to pick up and play. One great part of the controls is the targeting system used by pressing R, which locks you on to enemies making the camera no problem whatsoever during fights. I rated this a 9/10 for its easy controls, fun levels, and exciting battles.
The 3d graphics in this game are great. I really cant think of any problems with the graphics of this game, besides the fact that they are only a small step up from its N64 original.
The music in this game is just about perfect. There are a few flaws though, some being that some of the music is slightly repetitive, and there are no new tracks from the original. But the music in this game is fun, catchy, and varied and is essentially very fitting to the levels and game as a whole.
This is one of the games flaws, as the game is somewhat short, going about 10 hours to finish the game and 15-17 hours to complete it 100%. The replayability level in this game is about average, this is one of those games that you will put down once you finish it but pick up again later and like it just as much as the first time you played through it.
Rayman DS is a fun game with good graphics, easy controls, and nice long levels to keep you entertained. The only major flaw is the fact that there is nothing new from the original, no new minigames, no new characters, and the touch screen is never used.
Rent or Buy?
I would personally say buy. You may beat it once and be through with it, but i can almost assure you you could pick it up again a month or two later and play the whole games through again. You may want to rent first if you are not sure about how you feel on platforming/adventure games.
