    2. History

02/10/2005 - Submitted first draft to GameFAQS - rejected (low content).
Guessing this is mostly due to small file size, but.....
05/10/2005 - Re-submitted with extra information. Started to include
information regarding gameplay, rankings & high scores.
10/01/2006 - Sorry, it's been a while. Have had almost no access too
computers the last few months. Have started to add minimum
requirements for attaining S Ranks for each level &
                 difficulty.

    3. General Info

Howdy. A few people on the Ouendan boards (and myself) had a few queries as to
how scores are calculated in the game. I sat down for and analysed the game for
an afternoon and here are the results. I'm still missing some info in regard to
the titles & rankings, so if anyone could help me out here it would be much
    appreciated.

If there are any problems you have with this FAQ, post me a message
    on the boards. Cheers!

    4. Basic Scoring

There are basically three methods which are used to score points in Ouendan.
For the purpose of this FAQ they are described as:

    HITS, TRACKS and SPINNERS.

I won't go into the combo multiplier effect at this point. These are just the
base scores you will get for the various actions you perform within the game.

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    HITS:

Hits are the bread and butter of the stages in Ouendan. A Hit is best
described as a circle with a number inside which corresponds to the order
in which the circles must be hit. Hit the circle with your stylus with the
right timing to get points. Hits are scored accordingly:-

    Perfect: 300 points
    Good: 100 points
    OK: 50 points
    Miss (X): 0 points

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    TRACKS:

Tracks are sections where you use your stylus to trace the path of a ball as
it travels along it's tracks. They kinda look a bit like this diagram
(but about a thousand times better):

      --------------
    (1) . . . ( )
      --------------

    > The first & last 'hits' of a track (represented by the brackets) are worth
      30 points each.

    > Each 'dot' in between the start and finish is worth 10 points.

    > When a track 'repeats', each time you reach the end and are forced to
retrace the track you get 30 points.

    > Successfully completing a track nets you 300 points

    > A single stuff-up during the track will net you 100 points

    > Multiple stuff-ups during the trck will net you 100 - 50 points

    > Completely missing the track nets you 0 and counts as a miss.

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    SPINNERS:

Spinners are the sections where you spin the red and orange disc with you
stylus using a circular motion. The aim here is to spin the disc rapidly
enough to fill the meter shown around the outside of the Spinner.

    > Each revolution nets you 100 points (regardless of difficulty level).

    > Each revolution after the meter fills nets you 1,000 points (regardless of
      difficulty level).

    > Successfully filling the meter gives you 50 - 300 points.

    > Failing to spin the disc enough times to fill the meter results in a Miss.

    ********************************************************
    5. Combo Building

The best way to rack up a big score in Ouendan is to build a big combo. Each
hit in a combo (after the first two) gives you bonus points in the form of a
combo multiplier (see section 6) so it's in your best interest to not get any
Misses if you are going for a high score.

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    HITS

    > Each Hit will have an effect of + 1 on your combo counter.
    > Missing any Hit will reset the combo counter.
    > Missing any Hit will make it impossible for you to achieve an S rank.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    TRACKS

Each successfully completed part of the track (start, end and middle dots)
have an effect of + 1 on your combo. So whilst tracks are essentially the
lowest scoring part of any of the stages in Ouendan, they are the quickest
way to build the combo counter and therefore your greatest ally in building
    combos and high scores.

    > Missing any part of or all of the track will reset your combo counter.
    > Missing a portion of the track will still allow you to achieve an S-rank as
it is not counted as a miss.
    > Completely missing a track makes it impossible to achieve an S-rank.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    SPINNERS

Ugh, absolutely useless for building the combo counter. Spinners are quite
good for racking up points (if you're fast enough), but for most of us
represent a section of a stage to be feared as they are quite easy to screw
    up.

    > Successfully completing a Spinner section only results in adding 1 to your
combo counter (regardless of how many times you spin the damn disc).
    > Failing to spin the disc the required amount of times results in a Miss.
This will reset the combo counter.

    ********************************************************
    6. Combo Scoring

Each time you successfully perform an action in Ouendan you will gain points.
These points are great but are pitiful compared to the points you will achieve
    via the combo multiplier effect.

The combo multiplier is applicable to hits where you see a 300, 100 or 50
displayed on your screen. These circumstance include:

    > Every Hit.
    > The very last hit of a Track.
    > Successfully completing a Spinner section.

The formula to calculate the value of a success and it's applicable bonus is
given below. Alternatively you can calculate just the bonus in the much easier
to use Multiplier Table (in section 7).

    ---------------------------------------------------------
The formula used to derive the value of each hit is as follows:

    Easy : X + (Y - 2) * (X / 25)

    Normal: X + (Y - 2) * (X / 10)

    Hard: X + (Y - 2) * (X / 5)

    Where X = Hit value
          Y = Combo value

Note: for this formula to work, the value of Y must be equal to
    or greater than 2.

    ---------------------------------------------------------
Therefore the first five hits of a perfect combo in Normal mode
    would score like this:

     -------------------------------
    | Hit | Combo | Bonus | Score |
     -------------------------------
    | 300 | 1 | 0 | 300 |
     -------------------------------
    | 300 | 2 | 0 | 600 |
     -------------------------------
    | 300 | 3 | 30 | 930 |
     -------------------------------
    | 300 | 4 | 60 | 1290 |
     -------------------------------
    | 300 | 5 | 90 | 1680 |
     -------------------------------

Whereas the first five hits of a imperfect combo in Normal mode
    could look like this:

     -------------------------------
    | Hit | Combo | Bonus | Score |
     -------------------------------
    | 300 | 1 | 0 | 300 |
     -------------------------------
    | 100 | 2 | 0 | 400 |
     -------------------------------
    | 100 | 3 | 10 | 510 |
     -------------------------------
    | 50 | 4 | 10 | 570 |
     -------------------------------
    | 300 | 5 | 90 | 960 |
     -------------------------------

As you can see even after just five hits, not getting 300 on each hit of
a combo has serious damaging effects on your score. As the combo counter
increases, the detrimental effect of not getting a 300 also increases. This
is an interesting way of driving you to achieve a perfect score and
also increases the pressure on the player.

    ********************************************************
    7. Combo Multiplier Table

              ----------------------
             | 300 | 100 | 50 |
     -------------------------------
    |EASY | 12 | 4 | 2 |
     -------------------------------
    |NORMAL | 30 | 10 | 5 |
     -------------------------------
    |HARD | 60 | 20 | 10 |
     -------------------------------
    |V. HARD | 60 | 20 | 10 |
     -------------------------------

To calculate the bonus you will get for a hit, multiply the combo count (less
two) by the appropriate multiplier. For example getting a 300 on the tenth
hit of a combo will add an extra 240 points (8 times 30) to your score on
normal difficulty but on the two hundredth will add an extra 5,940 (198 times
    30) points.

On an interesting note, it seems that the bonus received for successfully
continuing combos is directly proportional to the value of each hit.

    ie. 100 is 1/3 of 300
          4 is 1/3 of 12
         50 is 1/6 of 300
          2 is 1/6 of 300

OK, maybe it wasn't that interesting......

    8. Ranking

At the completion of the stage a screen is displayed summarising your
performance (pretty much the norm for a music/rhythm game). Based on
the quality of your performance you are given a rank.

    S RANK

    The highest achievable rank.

    Requirements:
    > No less than 90% of your hits are worth 300 points.
    > No misses (other than in the middle of a tracks) are allowed.

    A RANK

    Requirements:
    > Between 80 - 90% of your hits are worth 300 points.
    > More than 90% 300s, but 1 or more misses.

    B RANK

    Requirements:
    >

    C RANK

    9. S Ranks

Following are the stats for each stage (by difficulty)

    > TotalHits refers to the total number of successful actions
you can perform during the level (ie, each Hit, Completed
      Track & Spinner).

    > < 300 refers to the maximum number of imperfect actions
you can perform before becoming inelligible for an S Rank
      (100s & 50s, NOT Misses)

    > The Max Combo is the highest combo count you can get for
      that stage.

If any of these are wrong, contact me via the Ouendan boards
    to let me know. Thanks!
