Reverse Generic Synthesis Lookups

While being able to calculate the results of a generic synthesis pairing is all well and good, it would be more useful to figure things out in the opposite direction - for any generic synthesis result monster, determine which parents can be used for synthesis.

For simplicity's sake, I will be ignoring the combinations that will create our monster as the 'third result'. Those pairings can still be reverse-engineered, but it is somewhat of a pain to do so and often the fusion isn't cost-effective from the standpoint of the parents thrown into the recipe.

In order to determine possible parent combinations for any monster that can be created via generic synthesis, follow these steps:

  1. Look up the Monster ID and Family of the creature in question.
  2. Use the appropriate 'Generic Monsters' table to get the next lowest Monster ID.
  3. Use the List of Monster IDs to find all monsters between these ID values.
    1. The Monster ID found in step 2 can also be used, but it is the lower bound.
  4. Pick a monster from the range in step 3 to use as ParentA.
    1. If ParentA is the same Family as our result, ParentB can be from any Family.
    2. If ParentA is a different Family, ParentB must share the result's Family.
  5. Using the result's Monster ID as the upper bound, pick ParentB...
    1. Making sure to fill the correct monster family requirement, if necessary.

Example - Making a Gold golem

Gold golem is monster #70, and belongs to the Material Family. The next-lowest 'generic' monster in this family is Rockbomb at #60. Thus, we have 10 monsters between IDs #60-#69 to choose as a prospective parent. If we pick Anchorman or Rockbomb, then our second parent could be any monster with a Monster ID less than 70. If we pick another monster from a different family (say, #65 Slime knight), then our second parent must be a monster from the Material Family with a Monster ID of less than 70. If we choose Frostburn at #26, then our final synthesis results look like this:

  • (Slime knight & Frostburn) = Metal slime knight, Gold golem, See urchin.

Special Synthesis

As powerful as generic synthesis is, it can't be used to create every monster. If you wish to create some of the more powerful monsters in the game, including most of the Rank S/X monsters, you will have to choose your two parents carefully and take advantage of the special synthesis recipes that the game has to offer.

Overview

Out of the three main kinds of synthesis, special synthesis is the easiest concept to grasp and understand, simply because the only factor you have to control is matching the two parent monsters to the recipe provided. Remember that special synthesis will be overridden if a quadrilineal synthesis recipe applies. This does not come into play often, but is worth pointing out. Special synthesis can be broken down into two different sub-types of fusions:

1) (Monster & Family) Combinations

These kinds of recipes allow for a little wiggle room when it comes to choosing one of the parent monsters. One parent will be a specific monster that is set in stone by the recipe. The other parent merely needs to come from the same monster family as listed by the recipe. Examples include Brownie, which can be synthesised by combining Hammerhood with any monster from the Nature Family.

2) (Monster & Monster) Combinations

For these fusions, the only two monsters which will fulfill the requirements are the ones listed right in the recipe. For example, when creating a Riptide, you must synthesise a Jumping jackal with a Heligator; no other monsters will do.

There are some monsters, however, which have multiple options for being created via special synthesis. Boss troll has three distinct combinations: either (Gigantes & Buffalogre); (Gigantes & Diemon); or (Buffalogre & Diemon) will all do the trick.

Quadrilineal Synthesis

While both generic synthesis and special synthesis recipes are only concerned with the two parent monsters directly involved in the fusion, quadrilineal synthesis instead looks at how each of those parents were created. If the right four monsters happen to be listed as the parents of both monsters in the synthesis pairing, then the quadrilineal synthesis combination will be unlocked and you will be able to select a new (and often quite unique) monster as the result of monster synthesis.

Overview

As stated above, quadrilineal synthesis combinations require that the parents of both monsters match up with the synthesis requirements necessary for the quad-synthesis recipe. This is in fact the ONLY requirement. Any other factors have no effect on the recipe, and can be ignored or modified as you see fit. This includes:

The following DO NOT affect Quadrilineal Synthesis
  • The monster type of the two monsters directly involved in the synthesis combo.
  • Any monster lineage beyond the four grandparents of the result monster.
  • The order of the four monsters listed in the quadrilineal synthesis recipe.

To put it simply, if you were to view the result monster's lineage in the monster information screen, if the four grandparents are the exact four monsters necessary for the recipe, then quadrilineal synthesis would apply.

Example - Making a Mumboh-jumboe

This is a popular monster that often serves as the introduction to quadrilineal synthesis, so working through the entire process of creating a Mumboh-jumboe will help to explain the inner workings and potential pitfalls of quad-synthesis.

(Mum & Boh) && (Jum & Boe) = Mumboh-jumboe

Our first step is to gather the four monsters listed in the combination. Jum is the product of generic synthesis, and can be created by pairing most Material monsters with commonly scouted monsters such as Scissor beatle, Wrecktor, Skeleton soldier, Beetleboy, or Cockateer (among many other ways...). The following three components can be made from Jum via special synthesis:

(Jum & Material Family) = Mum

(Jum & Beast Family) = Boh

(Jum & Nature Family) = Boe

Once you have one each of Mum, Boh, Jum, and Boe, then I would recommend you save your game, just in case. This is always a good habit before any synthesis combination; even more so with the multi-step process of quad-synthesis.

Second, you will synthesise the monsters two-and-two to create two result monsters. You do NOT have to pick (Mum & Boh) and (Jum & Boe) like the recipe suggests, but rather any combination will do. Let's say, for the sake of comparison, that you choose the combinations of (Boh & Boe) and (Jum & Mum). You will see the following results available for each fusion:

(Boh & Boe) = Living statue, Mum

(Jum & Mum) = Living statue, Mum

This is all predicted by the generic synthesis formula, along with the special synthesis recipe for creating Mum. It is important to note that you can pick either result monster, or even use the Phoenix sceptre if you want to keep the form of one of the other monsters during this next step. Just make ABSOLUTELY sure that the two result monsters have an opposite charge, so that they can be paired together in synthesis themselves once they level up. Reset and try again if you have to, or use the Plus/Minus sceptres, just make those charges opposite.

After these two operations, you will have two newly-synthesised monsters that you will need to level up. Let's say you picked a Mum and a Living statue as your two results. Raise their levels and train them as you please, but do NOT synthesise them with any other monsters in the meanwhile. You need to preserve the parental information for each monster. When you finally decide to synthesise them together, you should see the following result:

(Mum & Living statue) = Mumboh-jumboe

When viewing the lineage information for your Mumboh-jumboe, you will see that the four grandparents are Mum, Boh, Jum, and Boe, though not necessarily in that order.

Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of a Mumboh-jumboe!

Synthesising the Incarnus

A special kind of synthesis in and of itself, the Incarnus behaves slightly differently than other monsters when used in synthesis combinations. This one-of-a-kind monster joins forces with your main character after certain events on Xeroph Isle, and will be available for you to use on your team from that point on (except for a certain boss fight before entering the final dungeon, Tartarus). While the Incarnus itself is just one monster, it has ten different forms that all count as different monster entries in the Monster Library.

As there is only one Incarnus per game, any synthesis combination including the Incarnus will always produce an Incarnus in return. Before completing the game, you will always receive the same form of the Incarnus as the one used for synthesis. Once the credits roll, however, synthesis combinations are unlocked that allow you to change the forms of the Incarnus.

Incarni

The following is a list of each of the ten different forms of Incarni. For the purpose of synthesising other forms, you can use any form of the Incarnus as the parent, unless otherwise noted.

The Incarnus is always Neutrally charged, so keep that in mind when planning your synthesis options.

Synthesis Recipes by Parent

This section takes the opposite approach towards synthesis. Instead of showing how to create a certain monster, you can see what special and quadrilineal combinations are available with that monster as one of the parents. The Monster ID of the parent is included in front of their name. If a monster has a listing of 'Generic Synthesis only', then it is not involved in any known special or quad-synthesis recipes. The monster's name is enclosed in brackets for quick lookup via Ctrl+F.

Monsters Unavailable Through Synthesis

Not every monster in the game can be synthesised, unfortunately. To obtain these monsters, you will have to scout them, win monster battles, or resort to other methods entirely. Good luck!

IDNameHow to Obtain?
67Metal slimeScout from Fert Isle, Metal Menagerie, NPC Trainers
82Behemoth slimeScout from Uncharted Island (Slime-only)
95Great drackyScout from Uncharted Island (Dracky-only), NPC Trainers
102HellhoundScout from Fert Isle, NPC Trainers
169Robbin' hoodcomplete both monster and skill libraries*
183Captain CrowRead notice board in scoutposts, then defeat him in battle
190LeopoldObtain ALL skills*, Wi-Fi prize
195EmpyreaObtain ALL monsters*, Wi-Fi prize
200TrodeComplete both monster and skill libraries*, Wi-Fi prize
Note

There is a catch-22 inherent in some of the rewards offered by the commissioner's assistants. The prizes for ALL monsters / ALL skills really do require you to have ALL monsters or ALL skills in your library, even for the entries that are completely unobtainable unless you were given the reward FIRST.

Sadly, what this means is that is impossible to get a Robbin' hood on your monster team outside of using a save editor or some other kind of 3rd party device. Furthermore, if you are unable to connect to Wi-Fi or win the online battles necessary to receive Leopold, Empyrea, or Trode, then those three monsters will also be unobtainable in your game file, along with the Incarnus forms Ace of Spades and Wildcard.

Message from the Square-Enix staff:

Wildcard World Cup Concluding

Thank you for your interest in participating in the Wildcard World Cup. We regret to announce that the service will conclude on March 31, 2011. We have been glad to serve our players since the game's release in November 2007. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, the Staff

Monster Matchmaking

After you finish up with the events on South Celeste, a new service will open for business on Domus Isle. Located on the second floor of the department store, Monster Matchmaking provides you with a different kind of synthesis opportunity. The matchmaking service will provide one monster on their own, and in return will expect you to come up with a partner that meets the requirements they are seeking.

The obvious benefit to Monster Matchmaking is that you only have to use one of your monsters to get a new one in return. While the monster the service provides may not always have great stats, it does offer skillsets you don't normally see on that particular type of monster, and many of the matchmaking recommendations serve as hints towards special synthesis recipes.

For this reason, matchmaking is a useful tool that can be a time-saver if you simply need a quick way to create a certain monster. Each time you speak with the matchmaking representative, a list of potential partners is randomly generated. If the monster you wish to match with does not show up, you can cycle through the choices (randomly) by exiting the menu and then striking up another conversation. Not all matches are available right away - you will have to advance the story to unlock the full matchmaking list.

Matchmaking List

All credit goes to fluxcapacitor66 for compiling this list. The monster provided by matchmaking is listed first. The partner requirements are listed in bold afterward. Note that you will always have to provide a partner that is the correct polarity, as well. The stats for all matchmaking monsters are fixed; you can view them from the synthesis screen simply by selecting the monster.

The most valuable matchmaking pairing for your time is the Metal slime. As the service never runs out of monsters, you can use this combination as an infinite source of Metal slimes to put forth towards the Liquid metal slime synthesis recipe. Otherwise, you would have to catch two Metal slimes by yourself; a difficult task without the right monsters made even harder by the fact that scouting percentages dip dramatically for monsters you currently own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What monsters should I synthesise?

A: In short...it's completely up to you. The synthesis recipes in this game are very conducive to experimentation, since even if you only choose a generic synthesis option, the result monster will still have a higher Monster ID than at least one parent. Thus, it's quite hard to take a step back in monster quality when you synthesise, unlike the earlier entries in the Monsters series.

That said, it is sometimes useful to peek at the stat growths of the monsters you are considering. Having good stat growths in the right places can really make a difference between breezing through the game and fighting for your life. I highly recommend taking a look at the Monster Growth Guide FAQ by Gus_Smedstad if you are curious to see rough growth rates for most of the monsters in the game.

Q: What level should I synthesise my monsters?

A: This depends on how far you are into the game. The further you progress, the easier it is to gain experience, thus you can typically hold out for higher levels (and better stats) until you synthesise again. You should also consider waiting for a level where you gain skill points, since the extra points could prove helpful for the result.

For the first few islands, level 11 or 15 (for the extra skill points) are good benchmarks to shoot for. Once you can hunt Metal slimes on Celeste Isle, level 21 is a reasonable goal. Likewise, once the Metal Menagerie is unlocked, it is possible to be able to grind experience until level 30. After you beat the game, you can Whistle for Liquid metal slimes or even Metal king slimes in Tartarus, so this dungeon will become quite familiar to you as you grind your monsters up to max levels.

Q: Are you sure there's no way to synthesise a Great dracky?

A: Sadly, no. One might think that a quad-synthesis recipe with Dracky x4 would do the trick, but not even that will produce a Great dracky. An easy way to tell that this monster cannot be synthesised at all is to check the Monster Library. Under the How to synthesise section, Great dracky is listed as 'None'. Monsters that can be synthesised have either an example pairing, or "???" in the case of quad-synthesis recipes.

Q: I have a monster with a "Guest" label next to the charge. What is this?

A: Certain monsters that you can win as a prize on Wi-Fi (Leopold, Empyrea, Trode) come labeled as "Guest" monsters. The main effect of this tag is that a "Guest" monster is unable to be registered for competing in Wi-Fi tournaments. Furthermore, the guest tag is passed on through synthesis, so be extra careful when considering what to do with your "Guest" monsters. The Incarnus is the only exception to this rule; it can be synthesised with a "Guest" monster and still maintain non-Guest status.

It is somewhat amusing to note that even if you had a non-Guest Leopold, Empyrea, or Trode, those three monsters are still banned from participating in Wi-Fi tournaments anyway.

Q: I have a suggestion for this FAQ, what should I do?

A: Whether you've noticed an error in the FAQ, found a unique synthesis combination that is not mentioned in here, or just have a general suggestion for improving the format, please direct all feedback to the following email address, using the subject heading of 'Dragon Quest Monsters':

Credits

Though this FAQ in its entirety is an original compilation, the research itself behind the facts and formulas was, for the most part, gained though years of information gleaned from reading posts on the Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker board on GameFAQs. The following users and guides were particularly helpful in the making of this FAQ:

fluxcapacitor66 for creating the website www.dqmjinfo.com, which was a fantastic resource for synthesis combinations for as long as it existed.

hairyhobbits113 for pointing out that dqmjinfo.com had a still-functioning link to download a .csv of all possible generic synthesis combinations, long after the site had shut down.

zelos71 for creating the Monster List FAQ

Gus_Smedstad for his research into monster growth rates, listed in the Monster Growth Guide FAQ.

Zaraf for creating the Skill Guide FAQ

Of course, a special thanks goes out to all of the GameFAQs users who have posted on the Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker board. This is where the information about generic synthesis originally surfaced, before even the topic archival system was put into place. Useful topics like this are scattered throughout the board's history.
