What is the light that heals you during a battle?

Every once in a while, a light randomly comes down and heals me and my partner. It looks very similar to Joshua's combo finisher when he's in the air. What is this and is there a way to make it happen more often?

It's a level up.

Looks closer the next time it happens, the text "Level up" should appear. You level up during battles, since defeating an enemy grants you EXP.

Every time you level up, the EXP needed to go to the next level increases so there is no way for this "healing" to occur more frequently.

You stop leveling up when you reach Lvl 100.
