  1. The hints are in the map name itself.

The actual map name hints at what is inside. Here, Ruins means a ruins map. Some are straightforward, others you won't know until you find it. Like for example, Waterway is always water, Icepit is always Ice. A Crypt may be any environment. A Mine can be anything EXCEPT Ice or Water.

Diamond etc. deal with monsters (and chests)
Gloom etc. hints at what kind of Boss is at the end

On the board there is a sticky called "Grotto Names and what they mean" that can provide a much more in-depth explanation.

  1. Are you looking for Diamond Ruins of Gloom lv88 in order to unlock the Luminary class? If you just need Luminary, any Ruins with rank 8 (D) monsters have Moai Minstrels.

The environment is indicated by the second word in a Treasure Map name. The following names are ruins:
    Tunnel, Ruins, or Maze

Also, these map names can be ruins, but can also be a different environment:
Lair, Path, Mine, Crypt or World

  2. The name of the grottoes do not always indicate the type of grotto. The way it appears upon entering will tell you. Water Grottoes are always covered in water. Ice grottoes will look frigid, and snow at the walls and stairs. Nature grottoes always look like subterranean tunnels (all dirt and spots where mushrooms appear to be growing). Fire Grottoes are like large levels of rock, surrounded by lava and deep pits (you won't fall in, of course). Ruin Grottoes are always made of smooth, stone surfaces. You can find Moai Minstrels in nature grottoes (usually when they have more floors before the boss) of mid to high level.
