How do I solve "Off the Record" (Level 15 Paladin Quest)?
I'm trying to finish this thing, but I'm so slow that the infernal armours finish their turns before I can pull off Pincushion, or they miss me completely, or if they do hit, Pincushion does hardly any damage. Any advice?
This quest can be tricky. Here are some helpful tips:
First, Pincushion lasts for only the round in which you use it and is up the whole round regardless of where that character's turn falls in the order. If you're using it in a given round and you get hit you should reflect damage. Pincushion's damage is dependent on how much damage is done to you. If you are dodging or wearing heavy armors, you are hampering your damage potential. When using Pincushion you'll want to make it so your character is as vulnerable as you can afford to make them with out risking a one/two shot death. Wear light, or if possible, no armors and don't give them anything with evasion. A missed attack is no damage back. Also, you'll want to avoid using anything like Buff that strengthens your defenses. In fact, if available, using Double Up to lower defenses can boost your Pincushion damage nicely.
Along this same thread if your job level is higher you're going to be more resilient to damage. Swapping to a lower level job, or a job with lower natural resiliences will allow you to take more damage and, thus, reflect more back.
The other trick is making sure that the character's using Pincushion are the targets being attacked. The best remedy for this is to simply teach your whole party Pincushion or bring only members that know it. It's only 4 ability points in the Paladin tree, so it's a lot easier than spending the 28 points to get one Pincushioner Whistle out of the Warrior tree.
My last tip, it behooves you to soften up the armors first. A good reflect with the above strategies can do 25-40ish damage. Infernal Armors have 125 health, so if you lop about 100 off and then start Pincushioning you'll likely drop them within a round or two. Otherwise you'll be standing there for a while, and the last thing you need is for one of these guys to call up a Healslime and get healed to full.

Pincushion works for the whole turn, you don't need to see your character do that animation for it to hurt them.
It also does more damage when you take more damage, so you should remove all your equipment before entering battle.
Otherwise put all the Pincusion'ing characters in the front row and if you take anyone else, put them in the back row. Ideally you want to attack them with a weak attack first, so they only have a few HP left to Pincushion.
Put your other characters in the back row (main menu: misc -> tactics) and make sure your pally is in the front row. This should theoretically help the enemies choose the pally more often.
As for the damage, the damage they take is based on how much damage you would take. Therefore, you need to lower your own defense by removing armor and not buffing. Be sure you have a good healer, and ideally someone else who can use Whipping Boy if the pally gets in trouble. If your pally already has too much natural defense, you could always create a new teammate, switch it to pally, and level it up (minus the Res boosts).
