Introduction
This guide will be heavy with mechanics and analysis, therefore probably more geared toward advanced players. First time or casual players should consult a different guide.
Weather
Weather is determined six days in advance. For example, if you make a save on Summer 17, the weather is determined up to and including the 23rd. The 24th won't be determined until you sleep the night of the 17th. You can always make a save, and sleep six times in order to figure out what the weather will do for those six days. This information is useful for planning when to water crops. Because the weather is determined so far in advance, you can't just reload to change the weather like some other Harvest Moon games. The only exception to this is when starting a new game. If you don't like the weather for Spring 1 through Spring 7, you can just start over.
Typhoons are a type of storm that happens only in summer, and blizzards can happen in winter. If a storm hits, you cannot leave your house for that day. The day after the storm hits, you will find a large amount of debris in your field, including possibly tree stumps and boulders. Unlike normal weather, storms can cause debris to appear on planted crops, destroying them. Storms also cause higher than normal amounts of foraged items to appear around town.
Here are the probabilities for each type of weather in each season:
Spring
| Hot | 16% |
| Clear | 36% |
| Cloudy | 20% |
| Drizzle | 16% |
| Rain | 12% |
Summer
| Hot | 50% |
| Clear | 28% |
| Cloudy | 12% |
| Drizzle | 1% |
| Rain | 4% |
| Typhoon | 5% |
Fall
| Hot | 17% |
| Clear | 42% |
| Cloudy | 20% |
| Drizzle | 9% |
| Rain | 12% |
Winter
| Hot | 10% |
| Clear | 16% |
| Cloudy | 24% |
| Snow | 40% |
| Blizzard | 10% |
Stamina and Fullness
Like previous Harvest Moon games, stamina represents your energy. Using any tool uses up stamina. If your stamina reaches 0, you pass out and lose a day, so you should do everything you can to prevent that from happening. Different types of food recover varying amounts of stamina. Going to sleep at night recovers stamina depending on how much sleep you get. You can also purchase upgrades for your house that recover stamina over a period of time. Stamina starts at 100 but can be increased to 250 with accessories. The following table shows the stamina loss for using tools under various conditions:
| Condition | Stamina Loss |
|---|---|
| Use seeds | 1 |
| Use other tools | 2 |
| Rain | +2 |
| Snow | +2 |
| Hot | +1 |
| Drizzle | +1 |
| After 10pm | +1 |
| After 12am | +2 |
| Green Wonderful | -1 |
For example, if you use a tool with 2 Green Wonderfuls and it's a cloudy day before 10pm, you lose 0 stamina. Use that same tool after midnight on a rainy day and you would lose 4 stamina.
Unlike the fatigue mechanic of some other Harvest Moon games, Sunshine Islands uses fullness. If you are completely full, you lose about 1 point from the fullness gauge every hour. But if you are very hungry, you can lose up to 5 points per hour. Eating food replenishes fullness by an amount depending on the type of food. If you eat a couple of times a day then usually you won't have to worry about the fullness gauge. If you let fullness reach 0, you pass out and lose a day. The fullness gauge starts at 100 but can be increased up to 250 with accessories.

Friendship
Relationships with villagers, harvest sprites, pets, livestock, and wild animals are measured by friendship points (fp) which correspond to 0 to 10 hearts.
Villagers/Sprites
| Hearts | FP |
|---|---|
| 0 | 0 |
| 1 | 1 to 6,553 |
| 2 | 6,554 to 13,106 |
| 3 | 13,107 to 19,659 |
| 4 | 19,660 to 26,212 |
| 5 | 26,213 to 32,765 |
| 6 | 32,766 to 39,318 |
| 7 | 39,319 to 45,871 |
| 8 | 45,872 to 52,424 |
| 9 | 52,425 to 58,977 |
| 10 | 58,978 to 65,535 |
If you talk to a villager or sprite, you will earn 100 fp that night when you sleep. You can only get these points once per day per person. If you don't talk to a villager, there is a 30% chance to lose 100 fp overnight.
You can give up to one gift to each villager/sprite per day. They will only accept gives from you if you've talked to them the previous four days, or if it's their birthday. The points awarded vary depending on the person and the gift. Birthday gifts are worth triple. Giving gifts also counts as talking.
Talking/giving a gift to one harvest sprite of each color is all you get points for. You can't give multiple gifts in one day to harvest sprites of the same color. To raise fp with Red Sprites, talk to the one on Meadow Island.
You can raise friendship faster by using Friendship Pendants.
Note: To get credit for talking to Kirk, you have to stand in front of him and press A. Bumping into his boat and taking a ride doesn't count.
| Gift Category | FP |

| Really Likes | +300 |
| Likes | +100 |
| Dislikes | -500 |

Chen's Shop
At the beginning of the game, Chen will sell 1x Red, 1x Yellow, and 1x Blue Wonderful. After that he will sell Wonderfuls in Winter if certain conditions are met. The table below shows two categories of farm degree. If the last two digits of the categories match, the listed Wonderful will be sold in Chen's store. If multiple matches occur, only the most expensive will be sold. I believe that once you buy a Wonderful from Chen in Winter, he won't sell another one for 4 days. Chen also sells a Wonderful Piece on the 10th of each season for 30,000 G.
| Crops/Mining | Purple | ? |
| Crops/General | Red | 5000 G |

| 1st Prize | 1x Wonderful |
| 2nd Prize | 3x Wonderful Piece |
| 3rd Prize | 2x Wonderful Piece |
| 4th Prize | 1x Wonderful Piece |
The color of the Wonderful is determined by the day of the week the festival takes place, and the weather two days after the festival.
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday

|---|---|
| Hot | Yellow |
| Clear | Red |
| Cloudy | Blue |
| Drizzle | Green |

Mining
If you reach floor 255 of the mine, the Harvest Goddess will give you a Wonderful. The color is determined in the same way as the festival Wonderfuls.
Cooking
Wonderfuls can be made in your kitchen, but they require a very high cooking skill and a large amount of raw materials to make. See the Recipe section.
Anniversary
Once you are married, you'll get a Wonderful on your anniversary each year.
Charlie
You can have Charlie combine 7 Wonderful Pieces into a Wonderful, but I've never heard of anyone getting a color besides Purple from this.
Walkthrough
Since you can't control the weather, you will have to adjust your play based on what happens in your game. The walkthrough shown here is just one possibility but it illustrates some general principles, and shows what is possible given a fairly typical weather pattern. The general goals I pursued were to unlock stuff and make money as fast as possible. Fair warning: optimal play requires a ton of reloading and time investment.
Year 1 - Spring
At the end of this season I had the following accomplished:
- Earl Veg Lv74
- 377,847 G in pocket
- 73/100 Sun Stones
- All islands except Sunny Island
- All bridges built
- 15/45 Harvest Sprites
- 4 adult chickens (2 hearts highest)
- 3 calves (2 hearts highest)
- 3 lambs (1 heart highest)
- Horse 3 hearts
- Dog 2 hearts
- Cat 1 heart
- 4 mice/rabbits/badgers (1 heart)
- Girls 1-6 hearts (highest is yellow heart with Sabrina)
- Other villagers 1-5 hearts
- 39/366 shipped
- 59/238 recipes known
- 39/143 fish caught (degree high enough to catch medium fish)
- 6/40 mushrooms found
- 21/21 mine items found
- 8% of upgrades done
- 17% house
- 15% coop
- Coop built with 4 feeders (medium coop in progress)
- 30% barn
- Medium barn built with 6 feeders
- 6 wonderfuls
- 2 red (one from Chen, one from mine)
- 1 green (for winning crop festival)
- 1 yellow (Chen)
- 1 blue (Chen)
- 1 orange (mine)
- All tree seeds unlocked and 16x trees planted
- Rice paddies planted
- Cucumber, strawberry, cabbage, onion, pumpkin, pineapple, wheat, rice seeds unlocked
- Fridge, cabinet, beauty box, tool box, kitchen, teleport stone, large rucksack purchased
- Turbo Shoes, 2 blue Friendship Pendants, blue H. Goddess Pendant made
- Fishing pole and all 3 slot tools purchased
The weather was fairly typical: 5 Hot, 12 Clear, 7 Cloudy, 3 Drizzle, and 3 Rain. I did reload a few times at the start to get a good weather pattern for the first week. This is a good way to get an early edge if you don't mind reloading. Note that it's possible to get a better weather pattern than I got, and gains can be correspondingly better.
The gold amounts shown for each day are the amount in pocket at the end the day. In the crop layouts, I show an idealized version (i.e. no stumps or boulders). Make adjustments for your stump/boulder pattern. Until you've unlocked seeds and the dog, you should buy from Chen and Mirabelle one thing at a time, no stacks.
The plan is to learn 29 recipes from Nick and 28 from Haila this season. There's no good option for Haila on Spring 8. Here are the items to give them beginning on Spring 2:

New gifts:
- Harvest Goddess: Turnip
Raise Mystic Islands. For today only, throw a weed into the Goddess Pond to meet the Harvest Goddess, then give her regular gift of Turnip. Mine to floor 24, save, go down a floor, reload if you don't get 7 Orichalcum. Allow yourself two strikes of the hoe per floor. You have a decent chance to find the stairs down. As I said before, optimal play requires lots of reloading. Hit rocks on floors 11-19 to score lots of gems. Do 5 trips for a total of 35 Orichalcum and have Charlie start making some accessories. The Friendship Pendants need to be in separate equip slots to take effect. From now on always have those equipped when giving gifts and before falling asleep. We're being aggressive with Orichalcum so that we can unlock the Time-Slowing Ring as soon as possible, which is about halfway through summer. Use the 3 slot axe with yellow wonderful to get rid of the stumps in your field, but don't get other stumps yet.

Stop giving Kirk gifts for now. Doing this with some villagers saves money until you have access to the best Friendship Pendant. Raise Mushroom Island. Sell all the mushrooms you forage so you can unlock the pet pig, which will take a long time. Mirabelle will bring you a free chicken, but it's still a chick. Buy an adult chicken from Mirabelle. This is the one you want to raise to win the chicken festival next year. Keep it outside on cloudy, clear, or hot days. A good way to keep it safe is to put it between columns of crops with a few rocks on either side to keep wild dogs away:

Layout
The optimal farm layout is dependent on your equipment and whether the crop is renewable or not. For now let's assume you have access to the best equipment other than the Godhand. What would the best layout be for each type of crop?
Non-renewable: This is the easy case, it's simply the entire field planted with crops with no empty spots. If you have a watering can with enough blue and red wonderfuls, you can water the entire field in just a few uses of the watering can. You'd probably also need the time slowing ring for harvesting. The field is 42x15 so it would look like this:
########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ########################################## ##########################################
It takes 70 bags of seeds to plant this layout, and results in 630 total plants.
Renewable: We can't use the above layout for renewable crops because we'd never be able to reach the interior spaces for harvesting. So right off the bat we know we'll have to poke some holes in the layout to allow access to the interior. I believe the following layout is optimal for renewables:
########################################## ###.####.####.####.####.####.####.####.### ########################################## ###.####.####.####.####.####.####.####.### ########################################## ###.####.####.####.####.####.####.####.### ########################################## ###.####.####.####.####.####.####.####.### ########################################## ###.####.####.####.####.####.####.####.### ########################################## ###.####.####.####.####.####.####.####.### ########################################## ###.####.####.####.####.####.####.####.### ##########################################
Again it takes 70 bags of seeds but you only get 574 plants. Each . in the above diagram represents a spot where we'll have to plant a single grass square. This is to prevent debris from appearing on the field and cutting off access.
This is the basic harvesting pattern:
S###S S#.#S ###
All those plants can be reached by standing on the dot. Harvesting with the stylus is required for plants marked S.
Watering either layout requires very specific combinations of wonderfuls on your watering can. More details in a future version of this guide.
