chapter completing and the note counts in the Songs section filling in. File

Hello and welcome to my Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades FAQ! Up until recently I
must have been the only person in the western world not to have played a
Guitar Hero game. In actual fact, I'm still haven't played a proper console
version. Anyway, I picked up a Guitar Hero DS and both GH games pretty cheap,
    so here I am!

I did plan to write for the original On Tour game, but first of all there's
already one up. Secondly, Decades doesn't have an FAQ yet and besides, the
set list is 10 times better than in the first On Tour. You may well notice
that I have written for the UK version. That's because I'm from the UK
    surprisingly enough.

The FAQ will not include song-by-song, step-by-step guides, because there is
no point in them. There are no Star Cut-offs or Star Paths for the moment
here. No lyrics (use Google) or character info (just not important) will be
    found in this FAQ either.

Thanks for looking, I hope you find this FAQ useful!

    • Make sure the DS is turned off.
    • Insert the Guitar Grip into the GBA slot.
    • Adjust the strap so it is comfortable (see the section below).
    • Turn on the DS.
    • If the Guitar Grip is removed during gameplay, you will have to turn off
the DS and insert it back in the GBA slot. You have restart the song that
      you were on.

    .----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
    | H o l d i n g T h e D S |
    '----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

There are numerous ways that you can hold the DS, so I'm going to tell you
    about them.

The most obvious way is to put your left hand (or right if you're left handed)
through the strap of the Guitar Grip, then curl your fingers around so that
each one rests on a button. This is fine and will work, but I find this
restricts the movement of my hand dramatically and in Hard and Expert Modes,
I just can't keep up. Also, playing this way I found that I forced the Grip
out of the GBA like 50% of the time, so this really didn't work for me.

The better way (in my opinion) is to hook your thumb through the strap, then
curl your fingers around to the buttons. This way your hand is more free to
move and you can even rest the DS on the bottom of your fingers and play with
the top. The pre-menu screen actually suggests this to you.

Holding the DS up in such a way for a period of time can be tiring for your
hand. Using a table or the arm of a chair to take the weight of the DS will
help to combat this. Again, if you do this, you leave your hand freer to get
on with hitting the fret keys.

Remember, if you are left handed you can go into Options and select "Lefty
Flip". This will turn the screens around 180 degrees, so you can now turn it
around and play normally! You can also select "Colour Flip" so that the notes
are switched around to suit you too.

You may also want to consider if you want to use the pick stylus or not. Many
people prefer the normal DS stylus, as it can (apparently) help with faster
strumming. However, I much prefer using the pick, so it is really up to you.
The pick has two ergonomic grooves, which are for your finger and your thumb.
Don't try holding it the way you would hold a usual pick. It just doesn't
    work.

    '----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

You may want to check out the tutorial for this. However, I will try and
    explain this to you.

First of all, you need to know how to strum. Strumming is pretty easy. All you
have to do is make a "plucking" movement over the touch screen. Make sure you
stay away from the Star Power Meter and don't move too far up the guitar when
you do this. I know in the original On Tour, you could strum any where, but
those days are over in Decades. Moving on!

The Fret Board can be found on the top (left) (right for left handers) screen.
You will see various notes moving down the fret board toward the 4 coloured
keys at the bottom of the board. Hold down the key that corresponds with the
note that is approaching. With the key still held down, all you need to do is
strum. You know the note hit because flames will shoot out of the top of it.
Well done, you played a note!

I don't play guitar, so I'm sure there's a more technical name for these. If
you could help me out there, then drop me an email.

    | Note | Technique |
    |-------------+--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Single Note | Just strum on the touch screen as the note passes over the |
    | | key. |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Long Notes | Play the note as it passes over the key, then hold onto the |
    | | key until you reach the end of the line that is trailing |
    | | from the note. If you let go earlier than the end of the |
    | | hold line, you wouldn't break your note streak, but the |
    | | longer you hold the line, the more points you will earn. |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Long Note | Play and hold the note. At the end of the line, there is |
    | Into Note | another note to play. It appears that the two notes are |
    | | by the hold line. |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Rapid Notes | This is where there is a long line of notes, all right after |
    | | one another, with seemingly no time between them. Here, |

    | | keep your eye on the notes and play quickly, but try and |
    | | keep a rhythm going. If you still can't get it right, head |
    | | into practice mode until you have cracked it. |

    | | the most basic chord. |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Long Chord | The same as holding a note, play the chord and hold the keys |
    | | until you reach the end of the line that is trailing from |
    | | the chord. |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Single | This refers to the single space between the keys. This is a |
    | Space Chord | chord combination made up of either G&Y or R&B. Sometimes |
    | | these can be a bit of a pain to play, unless you get your |
    | | fingers in order. The best way that I remember to do this, |
    | | is to think of my fingers as the colours (index: G, middle: |
    | | R, ring: Y and little: B). All you need to remember is for |
    | | the GY chord, lift your middle finger and press, whilst for |
    | | the RB chord, lift your ring finger then press. |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Double | This won't appear very often in Easy and Medium, but is much |
    | Space Chord | more common in Hard. The only double space chord is the GB |
    | | chord. This isn't too hard to play on it's own but it can be |
    | | more trouble if it comes up in the middle of a riff. |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | Triple Key | Pretty self-explanatory. This refers to either a BYR, YRG, |
    | Chord | GRB or GYB chord. If the keys are all next to each other, |
    | | this isn't much to worry about. However, if there is a key |
    | | between them, it requires some fast thinking (or much |
    | | experience). |
    |-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
    | 4 Key Chord | Press all 4 keys and strum. Easy. |
    '-------------'--------------------------------------------------------------'

There are some other combos that I haven't mentioned here, but are pretty
obvious, such as a triple key chord hold, or a chord hold into a chord. I'm
pretty sure you can work these out for yourself.

Before I start, I HIGHLY recommend that you check out the tutorial for this.
It will explain this much better than I can. To find it, select "Training"
from the main menu, then "Tutorial and finally "Advanced".

Anyway, I'll do my best to spell this out for you. The easiest thing to
imagine is the Hammer-Ons (HOs) and Pull-Offs (POs) are essentially the same
    thing.

Sometimes during a song, you will see a note moving down the fret board that
looks different to the others. These notes have a sort of "shine" on top of
them. These are the notes that you can perform your HOs and POs to.

To hit this, you need to play the note that comes before the shiny note. As
the shiny note approaches, you must hold down the correct key (e.g. blue note,
blue key). Now that you have the key held down, let the note pass over the key
but DO NOT STRUM. As the note passes over the key, it will automatically be
played. Well done, you just performed a HO/PO!

In some cases you can get 2 or 3 HO/POs after each other. An example of this
would be YRG. However, sometimes you can hit a HO and then a PO straight after
it. That would look something like this: RGR.

Hopefully you get the idea. If not, like I said, check out the tutorial.

Star Power is your friend. It will temporarily double the number on the
multiplier. That means you can take it up to a maximum of 8x, which in turn
will earn you a lot of points.

To earn Star Power, you must successfully play a Star Sequence. A Star
Sequence is a series of notes that are shaped like a star instead of the
usual circle. If you hit all of these notes without choking, you will be
    rewarded with some Star Power.

On the left of the touch screen you will see a microphone. This is the Star
Power Meter. Every time you hit a Star Sequence correctly, this bar will fill
up roughly 1/4 of the way. Once you fill the meter halfway, you can activate
    the Star Power by either:

    • Blowing into the microphone (or shouting Rock Out!)
    • Touching the Star Power Meter on the left of the touch screen
    • Pressing any button on the DS (D-Pad, A, B, X, Y, R, L, Select) except the
      start button.

The more Star Power you have in the meter, the longer the power will last for
    when you activate it.

Sometimes during a star sequence, you will see a star note that has a hold
line trailing from it. As you play this note and hold, try whammying to
increase your Star Power. As you hold the note, wiggle the plectrum back and
forth over the screen. This will cause a whammy to travel down the line.
Performing this trick will add to your Star Power slightly and could tip you
over the edge to a high score.

You should note that you can whammy on any hold note, but this won't bring you
any extra points, though you can play the note to your taste.

You should always try and use Star Power when you have the 4x multiplier on.
That way, you will get the 8x multiplier and earn more points. Another good
time to use Star Power is right after you have finished a Star Sequence. That
way you won't over run into another Star Sequence (Star Sequences won't appear
whilst you have Star Power activated).

    | S c o r i n g |

The scoring method in Guitar Hero games is pretty simple.

    Single Note - 50
    2 Key Chord - 100
    3 Key Chord - 150
    4 Key Chord - 200

For long notes, the score counter will keep increasing as you hold the note.

To increase your score further, you can activate the multiplier. The
multiplier is linked to the number of notes you have hit in a row (known as
streaks). The multiplier can be viewed on the bottom left hand corner of the
    touch screen.

    10 Note Streak - 2x
    20 Note Streak - 3x
    30 Note Streak - 4x

By activating Star Power, the multiplier is doubled:

    1x = 2x
    2x = 4x
    3x = 6x
    4x = 8x

If you manage to get the 8x multiplier, you will be earning 400 points for
every single note that you hit and 800 for 2 key chords.

The Rock Meter is linked to your score. If you are playing well, the meter
will be in the green. If you are in the yellow, you're doing okay, but still
missing a few notes. If you are in the red, then you are playing poorly. If
you are in the red and the meter is flashing, then you are only a couple of
missed notes away from failing the track. As long as you are still playing at
the end of the track, you will get at least a 3 star rating even if you are in
    the red.

At the top of the screen will be your star rating. This goes from 3-5 stars.
The star rating that you awarded goes on the score that you achieved for the
song. Usually for Guitar Hero games, the Star Cut-offs (the boundaries of each
rating) are known. However, for Decades there is no such information as yet.
So basically play as well as you can and if you hit most of the notes and
use the Star Power effectively, you should get 5 stars. If you hit every note
in a song, you will be awarded 5 Gold Stars.

On the lower half of the screen you will see the percentage of notes that you
hit, the score you achieved for the song and the longest streak that you hit
    in the song.

Pick a name for your band, then put in your initials too. Now, choose yourself
a character. It doesn't really matter who you choose, as they are only for
aesthetic purposes only. Seeing as I'm usually concentrating on playing, this
isn't at the top of my list of priorities. This goes for the guitar too.

After you have waded your way through this, you will be given the option to
go through the tutorial. If this is your first time playing a DS version of
Guitar Hero, I would advise checking this out. If you don't find the
tutorials helpful enough, you can always check out the Game Basics chapter
    above.

Finally, you can get to some guitar playing...DS playing! You can now select
Lead Guitar, Bass or Guitar Duel. The Guitar Duel section can be found below
so won't be deal with here. Your choice really comes down to either lead
guitar or bass. Bass is by far the easier and may provide you with a nice
place to start. You will find far fewer chords in bass (at least fewer
difficult ones). Either way, you need to play both at some point so do what
    ever you feel.

After this, select your difficulty rating. If you're looking at this section,
you must have selected Easy Mode. At this point you should note, if you play
in Medium, Hard or Expert, you will complete Easy automatically. There's no
need to play through Easy if you're can play better.

In Easy Mode you don't even need to think about the Blue key yet. It's all
about the Green, Red, Yellow. Line your index, middle and ring fingers over
these, leaving your little finger free for now.

In Easy, the notes will move down the fret pretty slowly. If you're used to
the insane expert mode, then this will be a walk in the park. It's not only
the speed that's easy, the notes and chords are pretty basic too. You will
have to hold notes and play adjacent key chords, but that's about as advanced
    as it gets for now.

Welcome to Medium Mode! Here, you will be introduced to the Blue key. This
isn't a nice simple introduction either because you will have to perform the
single space chords too. That's the GY one (which I find easier) and the RB
one (which can be a bitch depending on your grip). If you need help playing
these chords, refer to the Game Basics section. This said, the Blue key won't
appear all that often, so just be ready when it pops up!

Your grip technique shouldn't have to change much from Easy Mode. You just
need to curl your fingers round like before, but this time rest your little
finger on the Blue key. If like me, you have big fingers, then you might find
this a bit of a squeeze. I think the grip could have done with being a little
longer, to space the keys out a bit more.

Though you will be playing more advanced chords, these will be nicely placed
most of the time, making them easy enough to hit. Towards the end of Medium,
you really need to nailing some of the more difficult riffs in preparation
    for Hard Mode.

Hammer-Ons and Pull Offs make their debut in Medium, so watch out for the
shiny notes and make sure you hit those bad boys.

The fret board will move slightly faster in medium mode too, so you need to
concentrate a lot more than you did in Easy.

So you mastered Medium and you're onto Hard mode? Don't expect this to be a
walk in the park like the previous two difficulties, this is where it begins
    to get tough.

As always, the fret board has sped up. When you were in Medium mode, you still
had plenty of time to see the notes coming and think about what you were
doing. Here, you need to see the notes and be immediately ready to play them,
without having to think or rearrange your fingers.

As well as the fret board speeding up, the notes and chords will become more
difficult to play. In Medium, the single space chords are usually placed
nicely, but in Hard they are a lot more awkward. However, they are far from
impossible as long as you concentrate.

Making their debut here are triple chords. These are either GRY or RYB.
Basically they are 3 keys in a line and are pretty easy to grasp. However, it
becomes more difficult when the triple chords are split up by a single space.
This is a GYB or a GRB chord. These can be a real bitch to master. Like I
mentioned in the basics, try and think of your fingers as colours. Only play
the colours that are required. That's what worked for me anyway, but if you
are still having trouble, then try practicing on a track with a few of these
chords in. In the UK version Some Might Say is pretty handy for this.

You may also find a couple of double spaced chords (GB) making an appearance.
You might think these pretty easy to deal with, but they are usually placed
in a horrible way, so keep your eye out for them.

The Blue Key plays a more prominent role too. Whereas before it cropped up
only a few times in a song, in Hard mode it appears almost as much as the
other keys. By now, you should have mastered all four keys and found a grip
that works well for you. As long as you remember that Blue appears more and
don't let you hand move too far towards the GRY keys, then you should get
    along fine with this.

The HOs and POs appear a lot more in Hard and they are often more difficult
to implement too. It is not uncommon to find a HO followed immediately (like
with no space on the fret board) by a PO which is follow by another HO.
Performing something like this can make the DS shift about in your hand,
making it even harder to hit the notes. I would suggest (like I always have)
sitting the DS on a flat surface such as a table. This will help take the
weight as well as keeping the DS in a stable position.

If you can play Expert Mode competantly, then there's no way you need this
FAQ. Really, there is only so many things I can say to help you out. By the
time you've reached this stage, you've either got it or you ain't.

As per usual, the fret board has sped up. In this mode, it is so fast that in
most cases you won't have time to pause between notes. This can be especially
difficult when you get a string of notes without any gaps. In this case I
would advise using the DS stylus instead of the pick. The stylus aids faster
    strumming.

The chords in Expert Mode can be a complete pain to master. They switch
around the board on after another and it can be difficult to make your
fingers do what your brain wants them to. For example, you might get hit with
a GY chord, followed by a RB then a RBY, then a single B and then back to a
GY. The patterns can be pretty random, so it's hard to get a rhythm going.

Basically, it's good not to learn to expect what the next note may be. This
is where assuming can be your downfall. To assume makes and ass out of you and
me. The best thing to do is to train yourself to react to whatever notes comes
    next.

Every single note of all types will appear at any random point, so you should
be prepared for anything. If you are struggling with the lead guitar, I would
strongly recommend that you try the bass career. With less notes and easier
chords, it's a good way to get used to the speed of the fret.

In Guitar Duel, you must first select your difficulty level. The difficulty is
exactly the same as in lead guitar or bass mode. If you select hard mode, then
you will get exactly the same note chart as you would in lead guitar and the
notes will move down the fret board at the same speed.

Your goal in Guitar Duel, is to score more points than your opponent. The
better you play, the more points you will earn (like in any normal mode).
You can tell who is scoring better by looking at the meter at the top of the
touch screen. When the hand is in the green, then you have a higher score
than your opponent. When it is in the red, you have a lower score than your
opponent. You need to be in the green at the end of the duel to win.

If you find yourself a few thousand points, you might think that you have
lost. Well, I can tell you that isn't always the case. So good playing on your
part (don't miss any notes and nail those Gem Sequences) and a few useful
Battle Items and you can catch up, so don't give in!

    .----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
    | B a t t l e I t e m s |
    '----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

Whilst you are playing, you will get the chance to hinder your opponent and
prevent them from scoring points. You can do this by earning Battle Items. If
you successfully play Gem Sequences (pretty much the same as Star Sequences)
then you will earn a Battle Item.

Battle Items will appear on the left hand side of the touch screen. Touch
these at any point during a duel to activate them. You can store up to three
Battle Items at a time. If you play another Gem Sequence whilst you already
have three items, you won't receive another item.

The best time to use any offensive Battle Item, is during a note-heavy
sequence. That way, you opponent will be hard pressed to score big points,
which is exactly what you want to stop them from doing. There is little point
in hindering your opponent from playing a couple of long notes. Much better
to use your item when they will miss the maximum amount of notes (and thus
    points).

Another good use of a Battle Item, is to use one when a Gem Sequence is
coming up. Using the item is going to seriously trouble your opponent and
hopefully it should stop them from completing the Gem Sequence, meaning they
won't get an item to use against you.

After I have made a mistake, or I have had a battle item used on me after
also good times to use a battle item on your opponent. I find it helps me
get back into it as well as helping catch up a few points.

A couple of things to remember. When you use a Battle Item (or one is used
upon you) the icon for that item will appear on your (or your opponents) side
of the score gauge. Whilst an item is being used on an opponent, you can't
    use another.

The icon is a picture of an amp. Use it and your opponents music will stop. I
find this to be an easy-to-play-through battle item, as you can still see the
notes and fret board, so even without music, you can still play the notes. In
some of the more crappy songs, you will probably be glad to have the sound
    turned down for a while!

This icon takes the form of a pair of scissors. Use it and one of your
opponent's strings will snap. If is used on you, then you must drag both
ends of the string together to fix it. Each end is indicated by a blue circle.
You can continue playing the other 3 keys without this, but one of your keys
will remain out of action until you repair it. This is pretty easy to deal
with and shouldn't cost you too many points.

The icon is a picture of a bomb. Use this and some of you opponent's notes
will be turned into bombs. When this happens to you, do not play the bomb
notes. If you do, then it will explode and you will lose points. If you leave
the bomb notes to pass by, they will be played automatically. This can get
kind of rough if you are on a high difficulty level, so keep your eyes out and
    avoid the bombs!

The Camera Flash has a camera icon surprisingly. When the Camera Flash is
activated, a couple of mild flashes will appear, partially (but not totally)
blocking your view of the screen. You can easily play through this. Directly
after the mild flashes, a huge flash will block your view entirely for a
second or two. The trick is to know what is coming, and play the note anyway,
exactly like you would if you could see the screen. This may take a little
practice, but it can be mastered, so that the Camera Flash will have little
or no effect against you. Ph33r strong Guitar Hero.

of the self-use items. Use it and the note chart will be changed to the
difficulty below that one that you selected. The fret board will also slow
down, in line with the lower difficulty. Use this during very difficult
sequences to easy your work load. Using one of these will work like a Shield,
    as you can't be attacked.

This is the green fast forward icon. This will speed up the fret board
immensely. Forget expert mode, this is hyper-speed. If you can see the notes
in time, then you can easily play through this. However, if this is used at
a particularly tricky time, like in a very chord-heavy sequence, then it gets
pretty much impossible to play through.

Pyrotechnics take the form of a flame icon. Use this and the screen will be
filled will flames. You must blow into the microphone to put them out. This
isn't just a quick blow mind, you need to blow repeatedly to get rid of all
the flames. Possibly the most annoying battle item, because it takes so long
to clear. Basically you just need to frantically blow as quickly as possible
    to clear the screen.

This icon has a picture of a Nintendo DS and a couple of green arrows. Use
this and the top screen will move to the touch screen the touch screen the
other way. Though the screens have switched around, you still need to strum
on the touch screen. You can still use Battle Items and the Whammy Bar and
everything on the touch screen. You just need to touch the part of the screen
where the item/etc. would usually be.

DO NOT STRUM ON THE TOP SCREEN. Strumming on the top screen could scratch it
(and it won't work anyway). Effectively, you will be strumming over the fret
board. This can't get kind of confusing a first, but you should settle in
pretty quickly. However, you will need to anticipate when the screens swap
back over, to avoid missing notes.

This has a blue and yellow shield icon. This item is actually the second
self-use item. Use it and you will block your opponent from using any battle
items on you. This will last for a short period, after which you will be

This icon is shows a pen and a piece of paper. When it is used, a random item
will be pushed in front of the screen, so that you cannot play. You are
supposed to actually sign it, but I find it a lot quicker to keep squiggling
any scribble on there until the item is removed. This can be kind of harmful
to your score, so try and get it out of the way fast.

This icon has the picture of a hand. Use this and you can steal one of your
opponent's items. A menu bar will appear on the touchscreen and you must pick
the item that you want. If you opponent has no items, then you can't steal any
from them, though your Steal will still be used up. This can be kind of time
consuming to execute, so to avoid losing points of your own, use this during a
break in play. Your opponent is most likely to have a Battle Item right after
a Gem Sequence. You can see their items on the right of the touch screen (they
appear as ?) so you can check that they have an item before using the Steal.

Q: Won't all this strumming damage my touch screen?

A: In short no. The DS has stood up to touch-heavy games until now, so GH
       shouldn't be a problem either.

Q: Where can I get a replacement Guitar Grip?

A: Currently, you can't get these from Nintendo. However, you can pick up a
cheap and cheerful Hong Kong import from eBay pretty cheaply.

Q: I'm strumming but the game doesn't recognise my playing!

A: Usually this is because you are strumming either too far to the left (near
the Star Power meter) or to high up the guitar. Try and stay pretty central
or at least further down and to the right. In the original On Tour, this
wasn't an issue, so maybe that is where your problem comes from.

Q: <Insert random noise> keeps activating my mic and using my Star Power.
        Help?

A: If you go into Options in the main menu, you can adjust your mic
sensitivity to low. If this still doesn't work, turn the mic off but you
will have to activate your Star Power by touching the meter on the touch
screen or by hitting one of the DS buttons.

Q: How do I import the set list from On Tour?

A: You can't actually do this. However, if you play a multiplayer game against
some one who has GH:OT, you can play some of the tracks from that game.

Q: The sound quality is really bad, is my DS broken?

A: I don't really have much of a problem with the sound, but wearing earphones
definitely improves the quality. Don't forget the developers can only work
with the hardware of the DS, so there are limitations.
