First you have to go to papu village and start the find me a husband quest;
find the husband in the mayor of whittleton;
after that the woodselling gus needs 5 iron bars

I heard the lumber guy in Whittleton wants some eventually. I haven't confirmed this, though.

That's part of a sidequest. The guy who makes bridges will put up a fence in the Anouki village..so you are asked for wood. You should give the iron to the Whittleton lumber to sharpen his axe and in exchange he will sell you wood to construct the fence.
I think you have to transport a Goron inhabitant to Anouki village and the Anouki Village chief to the Goron village first before you are requested this...and you will win more tracks in the process =D

Actually i believe it is just finishing the fire temple because i did not have that quest available until after then and i had not started the find me a husband quest till after he asked me to bring him iron. I had also already completed the fence quest before that so the iron is not needed to get the wood for that quest. I think most of the side quests are triggered by what dungeon you are past. Meaning that certain ones are unlocked after completing each dungeon.

All of these answers are wrong. Once you have the freight car you can bring the Woodsmith iron, provided you've done the husband quest for the woman in Papucha. Once that's done just ferry some iron (cost 100) to Whittleton and there you go. Also, to clarify, you don't need to give him iron before he'll sell you wood, so you're safe there.
