1. Abbreviated Story Mode Guide
===============================

This is a bare, efficient guide to story mode. It starts with a chapter-by-
chapter objective list, then provides checklists for exploring and
unlockables.

Notation: @ means required, + means note or optional

========
1.0 Tips
========

-Save early, save often. You'll usually have to restart from your last save if
you lose an important duel. You aren't forced into many duels, so run away and
save at a nearby save point if there's an important duel about to start.
-The fortune tellers in the shop tell you where to go next. This can be useful
if you get lost, which you shouldn't if you're using this guide.

When you start a New Game for the first time, you choose your name, country,
gender, and character's appearance. Name, country, and gender cannot be
changed. Appearance can be changed, although face can't be changed until
beating story mode and the change is random. Hair style and color can be
changed from the Options menu.

Additionally, if you want to save yourself a lot of trouble, go into the
"Options" menu, select "Duel Settings" at the bottom, and change "Display Card
Details" to "OFF". I can only describe how annoying this feature is: it
interrupts the duel and requires you to press A every single time your
opponent plays a card. "Do you want to finish checking cards?" Yes, please.

=====================
1.1 Basic Walkthrough
=====================

This is a procedural list of what's required to complete Story Mode.

The AI isn't particularly difficult, but you may have to play around until you
find something that works (or until you get lucky). I was able to complete
story mode using just the starting cards and the cards from four structure
decks: Zombie World, The Dark Emperor, Spellcaster's Judgment, and Zombie
Madness.

This section doesn't list the items you could potentially find during story
mode. See the Unlockables Section 2.1.b of this guide if you're curious. Note
that many of these items can't be found until you've beaten the game.

1.1.a Chapter 1
===============

Chapter 1: Awakening - Arcadia Movement

+I recommend going into the "Options" menu and turning OFF "Display Card
Details" via "Duel Settings". You won't get those annoying pop-ups this way.
@Duel Okita.

@Talk to Liquid to warp to New Domino City.
@Walk up to the Fortune Cup's front gate and talk to the guard to learn that
you can't enter.
@Talk to Liquid and Okita to initiate a block puzzle.
@Go to the waiting room inside the Fortune Cup building.
@Duel Tashiro. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose.

@Exit and go west to the training facility. Talk to Check and Nino in the
center. Win with three different structure decks and solve three puzzles.
+Pack unlocked: Structure decks (cycles through the ones you've won with;
changes after every 10 duels). These are guaranteed to give you many good
cards, so be sure to buy them regularly. I recommend winning with these four
decks: Zombie Madness, Spellcaster's Judgment, The Dark Emperor, and Zombie
World. They give the best variety of cards for building a good budget deck
later in the game.
@Return to your room. Duel Akiza. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose.

@Go south and enter New Domino City. Head east and talk to Kawasaki to
practice riding the Duel Runner. Clear the race.

+Itsuki is easily the weakest opponent in the game. Duel him if you want some
easy DP.
@Go west from Crow's house and then north. Enter the Satellite: Slum area. Go
east then south to find Yusei. Talk to Yusei twice and clear the Duel Runner
track.
@Return to B.A.D. and duel Kalin.
@Change into the Enforcers uniform and talk to Crow twice to start the team
Black 'n' Blue turf war.

@Inspect the crates to the left to find Arashiyama. Duel him.

(catch up to clear it), then a duel.
+Pack unlocked: Flaming Eternity
@Head west to the Enforcers hideout and go to the top floor.
@Go outside and talk to Kalin to enter the second turf war.

@Inspect the machine in the upper-right corner to find and duel Kuroe. Go to
the next room for another duel against Kameno. Go back and duel Ida (special:
Match duel).

@Go to Crow's house and duel Crow.

+Pack unlocked: Shadow of Infinity

@Duel Igusa and Hashinoshima (special: two-on-one tag duel).
@Go upstairs and two-on-one duel Torino and Mitchie.
@Literally, run right through a puzzle room.
+If you want to give your deck a boost, pick up the Lightning Vortex on the
right platform (inspect the ground) of the roof.
@Duel Gushizawa (special: 4000 life point handicap).
+Pack unlocked: Strike of Neos

+If you haven't already done so, inspect the map for a free Enemy Controller.
@Duel Jack and Yusei, then go outside the hideout and inside again.
@Go east and talk to Crow.
@Head west to the hideout and talk to Yusei inside.

@Go upstairs and sneak past the guard. Go up the stairs to the west. Sneak
through the room and behind the guard. Talk to Yusei and enjoy the show.

@Talk to Crow and go to bed.
@Leave and watch the scene.

Chapter 3: The Meeting - The Spirit World and New Allies

@Check the tree on the right, then the staff on the left, then the tree again.
@Solve a Minus Staff puzzle:
1) Stop the waterfall.
2) Cross the river and fix the bridge on the other side.
3) Start the waterfall.
@Duel Torunka.
@Go north. Duel Eiki.
@Enter. Go east and into the east room. Duel Zape.

@Go east into another Minus Staff Puzzle:
1) Get staff 1 and grow the mushroom near the center of the screen.
2) Head east then southwest and grab staff 2. Shrink the mushroom along the
east wall. Go up and grab staff 3. Go southeast to the next screen.
3) Go east and use a staff on the second boulder. Go into the river and grab
staff 4.
4) Go east and use a staff on the last boulder to knock staves 5 and 6 out of
the tree.
5) Use one staff on the first boulder and the other on the moss. Go into the
river and grab staff 7.
6) Shrink the last moss and continue east.
+Note: If you want to get that treasure chest, you have to head back from
Regulus's spot and do a different puzzle. You can't get it until you come back
to the Spirit World later. It's only a Divine Wrath, by the way.
@Duel Regulus.

2. Post Story Mode Unlockables Walkthrough
==========================================

This part of the guide is dedicated to unlocking the rest of the goodies found
in this game.

===================================
2.1 Unlockables found in Story Mode
===================================

This is a breakdown of the unlockables found in story mode. Some of these can
only be obtained after finishing the main story.

=================================
2.1.a Packs from Beating Duelists
=================================

Except for The Lost Millenium (which can be obtained in late chapter 5) and
Absolute Powerforce (which can be obtained in chapter 4), none of these packs
can be obtained before finishing story mode.

Structure decks are unlocked by winning structure deck duels in the Arcadia
Movement Training Center or with Peko in lower New Domino City. The former is
easier since wins against Peko only count if you win three consecutive duels.
You'll know you've won with a structure deck when a star appears above it.

@The Lost Millennium
Defeat the following duelists 3 times each:
Sugimoto, Igusa, Hashinoshima, Torino, Mitchie, Gushizawa, Roy, Anna, Oda,
Rossi, Hideki

These duelists are in the Satellite: Slum area. Sugimoto is right by the
entrance. Igusa and Hashinoshima are inside the factory. Torino and Mitchie
are on the third floor of the factory. Gushizawa is on the top floor of the
factory. Roy, Anna, and Oda are outside the Duel Runner shop. Rossi is inside
the Duel Runner shop. Exit and go south to find Hideki.

@Enemy of Justice
Defeat the following duelists 3 times each:
Annie, Itsuki, Mimi, Chihiro, Yusuke, Hayakawa, Gordon, Ida, Kuroe, Kameno,

shop. Ida and Kuroe are in the first room of the bowling alley, and Kameno is
in the second. Exit the alley and head right and into the old Team Black 'n'
Blue hideout. Arashiyama, Clock, and Kiyoto are inside the hideout. Hiroyuki
and Natsumi are outside the hideout.

To duel Natsumi, you'll need to go into the Team Black 'n' Blue hideout and
save Hana at the end of the basement puzzle:
Go down. Push the top block one square to the left. Push the middle block to
the right. Loop around the passageway and push the right block into the wall.
Go down and push the block all the way to the right. Talk to Hana.

@Force of the Breaker
Defeat the following duelists 3 times each:
Aase, Motoi, Fukuoka, Kawasaki, Ticera, Honda, Helio, Robinson, Jean, Coppola,
Morrison, Angie, Figaro, Corse, Liquid, Okita

These duelists are found in the lower half of New Domino City. Aase is right
next to the gate. Motoi and Fukouka are on the next screen. Enter the left
building (the Duel Runner shop) to find Kawasaki. Exit and continue right to
find Ticera and Honda. Enter the shop to find Helio. Exit and continue to the
next area to find Robinson and Jean. Coppola is in Bootleg. Exit and enter the
southeast building to find Morrison and Angie, then go downstairs to find
Figaro and Corse.

To duel Corse, you need to have Akiza as your Tag Partner. Go to upper New
Domino City and head right to find Akiza. Duel her until you've beat her 3
times, then go to Bootleg and make her your Tag Partner. Return to the
underground and talk to Corse. After having a Tag Duel, you can duel him
regularly.

back to New Domino City and talk to Blister. Talk to them again and they'll
leave for their new apartment. Head back to the apartment and you can duel
them.

@Gladiator's Assault
Defeat the following duelists 3 times each:
Bass, Seria, Giado, Kurihara, Shirase, Tashiro, Smith

The first five duelists are in upper New Domino City. Bass is to the right of
the entrance. Seria and Giado are to the left of the entrance. Kurihara and

2.1.c Star Chip Items
=====================

In story mode you can trade Star Chips with Chihiro, found outside the B.A.D.
card shop.

There are 140 Star Chips total. 108 are obtained in World Championship from
beating duelists (both single and tag) for the 1st time. 27 are found in story
mode. The other 5 are strangely absent (although I've heard you can find them
in races). You can also buy an unlimited number from Wi-Fi, but they aren't
always available.

Do a search for "*" Chip (without the "") to find the story mode locations
listed in this FAQ.

2.1.d Treasure / Goodies
========================

There's lots of stuff lying around in story mode. This is a list all of it.
Most items are found in chests, or by inspecting an object with a yellow arrow
over it. Many of these items don't appear until after beating the game.

and the block nearest the northeast corner. Push them onto the lifts and use
the switches to bring them up.

Those last two treasures are a chore to get. Without crossing to the north
section, bring two blocks from the south section to the west and make a two-
block bridge between the north and south halves. You can now push all the
blocks in the north section up the lift and across the bridge to the south,
then down the west lift and into the northwest corner to make a five-block
bridge. If you do this correctly, the only block that you don't use in the two
bridges will be a block stuck along the southeast wall.

2.2 Duel Runner Unlockables
===========================

There are three kinds of unlockables here: Races, cards, and parts.

You'll know you've gotten all the parts of a certain type once a red dragon
head appears to the left of its bar on the customization screen.

-Races are accessed from the computer in the Duel Runner shops.
-Rank is based on time.
-The S-Rank times are 30 seconds under the target time.
-A common mistake is to put more parts on the Duel Runner than it can handle.
An overloaded cart drives slowly and handles poorly. If the stat pentagon
turns red, take parts off until it turns blue.

================
2.2.a Race Times
================

This customization worked for S-Ranking all the races. It's convenient because
it focuses on acceleration, so crashes have less impact on your time.

===My Duel Runner===

Frame: Gamma Frame III
Engine: DWE-4000
CPU: KPC-900
F Parts: None
S Parts: Feather IV
R Parts: None
I Parts: Accelerator IV

===Time Attack===

1) Highway
Very Hard S-Rank Time: 50"

2) Old Highway
Very Hard S-Rank Time: 50"
Strategy: Fall in the second hole. Stay in the center of the track to dodge
the boulder and the fourth/fifth holes.

3) Old City
Very Hard S-Rank Time: 45"
Strategy: Head right at each junction. Brake if the laser is going to hit you.
It's better than getting hit.

4) Geoglyphs
Very Hard S-Rank Time: 40"
Strategy: Hug the inner walls to dodge the hazards. Dodge Ccapac Apu's hands
by zigzagging left and right with good timing (turn when they jump up).

5) Goodwin Mansion
Very Hard S-Rank Time: 1'20"

===Battle===

-S-Rank times are three times the Time Attack S-Rank times.
-Use whatever part setup worked in the Time Attack track.

=====================================
2.2.b Race-Exclusive Turbo Duel Cards
=====================================

These cards are only found on Duel Runner tracks. If you don't get the
specified card, you'll get a random card from one of the Acceleration packs.
From my experience, using the DWE-CG engine greatly increases the incidence of
the Ultra Rare race-exclusive cards.

Highway:
1) Speed Spell - Confiscation
2) Speed Spell - Fissure
3) Speed Spell - Half Seize

Old Highway:
1) Speed Spell - Delinquent Duo
2) Speed Spell - Cold Wave
3) Speed Spell - High Speed Crash

Old City:
1) Speed Spell - The Forceful Sentry
2) Speed Spell - Curse of Fate
3) Speed Spell - Synchro Defuse

Geoglyphs:
1) Speed Spell - Harpie's Feather Duster
2) Speed Spell - Metamorphosis

Goodwin Mansion:
1) Speed Spell - Raigeki
2) Speed Edge
3) Speed Spell - Speed Jammer

2.2.c Duel Runner Parts
=======================

Most parts can be bought after beating story mode. The marked parts have
specific requirements.

DWE-CG increases the chances of picking up a race-exclusive Ultra Rare.
KPC-DG triples the DP you get from picking up coins in races.

2.3 World Championship Mode Unlockables
=======================================

@Rise of Destiny: Win 50 duels.
@Elemental Energy: Win 100 duels.
@Cyberdark Impact: Win 200 duels.
@World Championship Edition 1: Beat the first 6 single duel opponents 3 times.
@World Championship Edition 2: Unlock 12 tag teams.
@World Championship Edition 3: Unlock 26 single duel opponents.
@World Championship Edition 4: Unlock 18 tag teams.
@World Championship Edition 5: Unlock 41 single duel opponents.
@World Championship Edition 6: Unlock 24 tag teams.
@World Championship Edition 7: Unlock 56 single duel opponents.
@World Championship Edition 8: Unlock 30 tag teams.
@World Championship Edition 9: Unlock all 72 single duel opponents.
@World Championship Edition 10: Unlock all 36 tag teams.
@All at Random: 95% card completion and all other packs and decks unlocked.

@Duel View/Tag Duel View modes: 80% card completion
@Up to 1 forbidden card list: 90% card completion
@Recipe Duel Mode: 90% card completion

If you've ignored World Championship mode so far, you should have unlocked
everything but World Championship Editions 1 and 5-10. Defeat Princess Pikeru
through Izanami three times each to get World Championship Edition 1.

For World Championship Editions 5-10, you're going to have to unlock the
regular duelists and tag teams listed below. It takes a while, but you should
be able to unlock 41 single duel opponents and 24 tag teams without much
trouble. From there, you can farm DP to get 90% card completion and unlock
Recipe Duel Mode. The hardest duelist requirements are made easier by
unlocking Recipe Duel Mode and making the opponent use a "punching bag" deck
with only unplayable high-level monsters.

By the time I finished unlocking all the duelists (save the 50-hour and 100-
hour mark duelists), I had played 43 hours and 498 duels. I played those duels
with an insta-win code on, so to adjust for actual play I'll assume each duel
takes an additional 5 minutes, for a grand total of 85 hours. Add in time
spent farming DP, building decks, and actually playing and you'll easily pass
the 100 hour mark.

For DP, I was scoring somewhere on the order of 500-700 DP for every duel.
This means that some 300,000 DP is amassed just from unlocking stuff.
Unfortunately, that isn't nearly enough to get one copy of every card from
buying packs. Here are my estimates of what it costs to get a single copy of
every card from every pack.

---100% Completion DP Requirement Calculation

When you buy a whole set of 50 packs you get 5 Ultra Rares, 10 Super Rares, 35
Rares, and 200 Commons. Same numbers every time.

If you only buy packs in sets of 50 until you get all the cards in the set, my
math shows that it will cost you an expected value of 1.17 million DP for all
the packs. In comparison, if you just bought the All at Random pack you would
pay around 2.6 million DP (348 boxes) to get one copy of all the cards.

For three copies of each card, you'd have to buy around 2.33 million DP of
individual boxes, or 4.37 million DP (583 boxes) of All at Random.

To obtain an additional 2 million DP, you're going to have to farm. Duel
Runner races and normal CPU duels give roughly 600 DP a minute (takes 55-60
hours to get 2 million DP). Since the rating cap is only 5000 in this game, DP
ghosts are only slightly better than racing. Pity.

Conclusion: If you want all the cards quickly, use an Action Replay. Sure, the
suggestion goes against the spirit of this guide, but it's worth 60 hours of
your life. The next fastest DP method is to pick up DP in races for around 60
hours (around 20 hours if you have the Wi-Fi download KPC-DG engine).
