Normally with Pokemon games, Game Freak likes to do an "expansion" version: like with Pokemon Yellow after Pokemon Red/Blue/Green, or Pokemon Platinum after Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. The expansion of Pokemon Black and White was predicted to be Pokemon Gray Version by many people: however, these games got their expansion in the sequels Pokemon Black/White Versions 2. Despite this, however, Game Freak still registered the trademark for Pokemon Grey Version, even though it was a project that was not pursued.
Pokemon Black and White, as with most generation-opening Pokemon games, introduced a number of new Pokemon into the games. To be precise, they introduced 156 new Pokemon. Pokemon Black and White Versions were the first to begin the idea of Shiny-Locking Pokemon: that is to say that, under all legitimate (i.e. non-cheating) circumstances, certain Pokemon could not be Shiny. This list began with the Pokemon Celebi, Jirachi, Arceus, Victini, Reshiram, Zekrom, Meloetta, Keldeo, and Genesect. These Pokemon will admittedly still have Shiny sprites encoded into the game, but only for placeholder purposes. Why this policy was introduced, and with these specific Pokemon, is however unknown.

This is the first time Pokemon Centers and Poke Marts were placed together in the same building for convenience.
Pokemon Black and White mark the first time that TMs, as well as HMs, become infinite-use items.

Pokemon Black and White marked the first time that a Pokemon's default name would abide by common English standards by only capitalizing the first letter of each part of its name. For example, "Pikachu" became the spelling, not "PIKACHU".
N: They’re not here. Let’s ride the Ferris wheel and see if we can spot them. I love Ferris wheels... The circular motion... The mechanics... They’re like collections of elegant formulas."
