Top 10 Lists : The Top 10 Coolest Side Characters In Games *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
There have been many cool characters through out gaming history, but most of them have been the protagonists of the game. How ever, I feel that in many games there are side characters who are even better than the protagonist. And these characters usually don't get the attention they so clearly deserve. I'm hoping that this Top 10 list fixes that. Let's get started.
#10: Waka- Okami (WII)
This guy was a cool character throughout a fantastic game. He is a Samurai/ Ninja who can jump from a tree and land gently on the surface of the water. He also has the traditional sword, but his flute, when he runs his hand across it, becomes a lightsaber- type weapon. So now you have a ninja crossed with a Samurai who has a metal sword and a lightsaber. And besides, he has the hilarious nickmane of "half baked prohet." givent to him by Isuun. Plus, he plays an important role near the finale.
This guy is awesome. he is a droid who was purchased with the idea that he is an expert translator. However, as the main character soon finds out, he is really a droid who likes to kill "meatbags." He is also a very good gun character; in his higher levels, he's nearly unstoppable with a gun, be it rifle, heavy weapon or blaster pistol. And, when asked what love is to him, his response is priceless.
This guy is an interesting character in the game who, once you get him, pretty much becomes the choice character when you need a fighter. He is the cheif of the Mandalorian clan on a moon that you land on after being shot down. He also has some pretty awesome armor that you can't take off. Coupled with the fact that he has a very interesting backstory makes this guy number eight. My only complaint about him is that (as far as I know, but I haven't found everything in this game yet) there is no explanation about how he became Mandalore.
This Ghost Girl is a denizen of one of the creepiest levels of any game of all time. Basically, she is a girl who lived in an orphanage- turned- asylum who was killed by the "Grey Lady." When you first interact with her, it's actually when you run up a winding staircase to an attic where, behind the door, a loud banging noise is heard. When you finally meet her, she's just a blue light... but her shadow casts her actual shape. A very good character in one of my favorite levels in any game.
I know this guy doesn't play a huge role at all, but he is a good character. In the uber hard second level of this game, you must break a fence named Cutty out of a Hammerite prison. You must pull all the levers to the prison cells, causing a riot and distracting the guards. When you finally do find him, it sounds like he has a lung problem and the voice actor does a very good job of that. I won't spoil anything more, but let's just say fate has a cruel way of twisting things.
There really isn't too much I can say other than, he has very interesting conversations with Snake. He is basically a weapon expert that will tell you about certain weapons throughout the game and gives you advice such as "not to look into darkness too quickly after looking into light and don't play the game with the lights off." He also provides a huge twist and one of the greatest lines ever in any game near the end of the game. I won't spoil anything this major, so find out yourself.
This guy is so awesome, it really can't be described in words. He is a Dragoon with the Red Wings of Baron. He has an awesome design in the opening of this game and can jump, like, a million feet into the air. And as far as the story goes, he adds alot in the theme of a friend's betrayal and redemption. Some would say I'm looking too deeply into his character, but that's the impression I got.
This guy is disguised as a Metro Police Man and is a major figure in the rebbelion against the Combine. He provides some great dialogue, including saying the term "head humpers" when he refers to head crabs (anyone whose played this game knows what I'm talking about) . Plus, he gives Gordon the ever popular crowbar to Gordon near the beggining of the game. I do wish that Valve expanded more on his character, but the plot isn't that great to begin with. (Read my reveiw of Half Life 2 if you want to know details.) But he is still one of my favorite characters in this game.
This little guy is Cackletta's right hand man. He may be small, but this guy is nuttier than almost any other character in any game ever. He is constantly butchering grammar in ways that give him some of the best dialogue in the game. Here's a sample, when he's talking to Mario and Luigi. "Your existence is as pathetic as a drawing drawn by a child who is stupid." And he provides a suitably challenging near endgame final boss. You may think "with stuff like that, how is he not number one"? Well, if you've played the game that has the number one coolest side character of all time, you know why.
Okay, this guy is Joe's rival. And yet, I would go as far as to say that he is cooler than Joe. He starts out as Joe's evil double. Then, in the next stage, he is the coolest side character ever. Okay, he starts off reading the script for this movie (game) and outlines the bad guy's plans. After Joe freaks out about what the bad guys are going to do, Alastor throws the backwards script behind him and says "Well, I don't really give a rip about all that. I just want to test my powers." He flys around the stage and flings lightning and swords, sometimes both, at Joe. This guy's death scene is one of the best scenes in the game. The best thing he ever says, after going on about how it can't be over for him, is "Hey man, help a brother out." And you get to play as this guy after meeting certain conditions and it's a nice change of pace from the other characters. I really can't do justice to how awesome this guy is. If you want to know, as Alastor says in VJ 2 "If you want to know who I am, go out to your nearest game store and purchase a copy of Viewtiful Joe."
Well, this list has come to a close. I know that you the reader may not agree with these choices, but this list is based on opinion. There are alot of other great supporting characters in video games that are better than the main character, but I felt that the characters in this list were top ten worthy. So, as I stated in the beggining, I hope this list gives credit to underappreciated or underused characters in video games. Thanks for reading and happy gaming.
