Top 10 Lists : The Top 10 Free Computer MMOs
Welcome to my first top 10 list. After remembering some past experiences(and talking to some people that were searching for one), I've decided to compile a list of the some of my favorite free MMOs. Most of them require a download, while a couple do not. To find the websites of any of these games, simply do a Google search. They'll come up pretty quickly, as last time I checked, they all had several active players.
#10: Rakion (PC)
A fun fighting game, and not in the way that you'd normally think. You can be one of several classes that each have unique abilities. Arena battles with a few different objectives, and each player with their own fighting style makes for very fun battles. There are also single-player challenges within the game that are great for experience and gold, each with a rank based on how quickly you complete the mission. It is recommended to do a little research with your character and decide how you want to distribute your stats early, as many of the more experienced players are very specific and focused with their skills, which is a distinct advantage as long as you're familiar with moving and dodging. The one outstanding issue is once you hit level 11 or so, most of the games involve players that are level 20-25+, which means the lower level players will have difficulty due to facing stronger weapons and armor. There's also literally nothing to do but fight, so this game may get boring quickly for some.
A unique game. It has some fun value, and a lot of things to do. The puzzles involve a variation drop-down puzzle that reminds me of a mini-game from one of the PS2 Mortal Kombat games(Armageddon or Annihilation. Can't remember which). You can own your own ship and run a crew, or join a currently existing crew, conducting raids and attacking other ship(including those owned by other players). If you don't want to be part of a crew, you can join one temporarily, or you can go to an inn on any of the various islands and play Poker. This game is certainly worth a look if you have never played it. There's plenty to do.
An MMO that has a very large Turkish gamer population, though many of them speak English. Each class has a subclass of skills, based on how you want to train your character. Rogues tend to be my favorite, particularly the Assassin subclass that uses daggers. Armor-ignoring skills are very useful, particularly as you level up and fight stronger monsters. With a large number of quests and areas to explore, as well as level-restricted PvP, there should be a little something for everyone. Clans are abundant, each with its own cape.
Another MMO that features standard classes, though once you get to a certain level, you can choose to do a few things for a lot of money. A merchant travels from town to town, transporting goods. A thief has the ability to attack the merchant's caravans, and take their goods. If you search youtube, there are a lot of videos of thieves doing their work. One drawback of the game, though, is open PvP. Once you hit level 20, you're free game. It's been a while since I've played this one, but combat itself is pretty fun. Give it a go.
A flash game that's played within a browser. You can't interact with any other players(though you can through Adventure Quest Worlds, but that's not a free game). However, active stats, equipment, spells, and whatever else are tracked on highscore boards. Each character has their own character page, where stats are tracked. The travel map has a load of areas you can go to, as well as many classes, the ability to choose a clan(though I think that may have been changed to Guardians only, which is a 1-time fee), and a load of quests. You can only choose one class at a time, though your progress through each class(and the skills you've unlocked) are always saved and can be changed at just about any point. Updates are released every week, I think on Fridays. It's always the same day, whichever day it is.
#5: Flyff (PC)
Another game with iffy graphics, but a good combat system. It's plenty of fun, with loads of areas to explore. Last time I played, the community was fun to talk to. Unfortunately, I don't have too much info on this game, as it has been over a year since I last logged in. Go ahead and read some reviews on it, as although it's a fun little game, it's really not the best. If you're into this sort of game, I really do recommend Fiesta over it, but some people might like the skills better on this one. It's missing a few key features that I think are needed for a decent MMO to become good/great, like an out of combat skills system.
#4: WarpForce (PC)
An official Adventure Quest expansion by the same group. It has a lot of different things to do with combat, involving a few different weapon types. Being created by the same group, with more experience, it's the better of the two games. Though Artix Entertainment has a number of other games, I rate these as the best. The variety of things to do has kept me interested for a long time. It has virtually the same system, but different story lines and in different locations. Neither game requires a download, so give them both a try.
A game made by Nexon, the creators of Maple Story(and some other games). This one features varied quests and 5 classes to choose from. At level 18, you can choose a subclass, which gives you access to more skills. Each class has their own weapons. Armor can be equipped by anybody, though it's a good idea to find out what armor mastery you have and use that armor, as it gives you a defense bonus. Moving through various dungeons is the main point of the game. This dungeon crawling is one of my favorite styles of play, so it's a great game in my opinion. Some may not find it so appealing, though.
#2: MapleStory (PC)
One of my favorites by a long shot, this side-scrolling 2D MMO by Nexon is one of the better ones out there. Featuring anime-like graphics and faces(try pressing the various F# keys), it has a number of classes, each with 3 or 4 job advancements, each one getting more specific and more powerful. If you're a fan of leveling up quickly, I'd suggest going with the mage, and at level 30, advancing to a Cleric. One you max out the area heal spell, there are a number of skeletons you can train against at an incredibly fast rate, though it slows down around level 80. Featuring 200 levels and a lot of instances/party quests, there's a lot to do. For those that want a good challenge, you can choose to not take a class quest, and remain a beginner. With only basic weapons and skills, leveling up is far more difficult, but I respect the higher level beginners. It shows dedication, but it means leveling up at a FAR slower rate.
A game with cartoon-ish graphics that's actually a lot of fun. However, it can get repetitive. One of the best features of the game is instanced missions. Players of a certain level can join a team, and go through instances with monsters that are much more powerful than what you'd find elsewhere. Each of the players that completes the mission(meaning try not to die) gains bonus experience at the end of the instance. There are varied quests and skills, along with an interesting title system. Use the wiki to help achieve titles. Some of them are a bit off the wall(such as the shout 1000 times without logging out).
This concludes my Top 10 list. All of the games listed are completely free for life, with the option to pay for content. Unfortunately, my absolute favorite game is not on this website, so I could not add it. Achaea. Search google to find it. It's a text-based game that has so much customization, there's never nothing to do. The players have ultimate reign, but you must role-play unless you're sending Tells(whispers, private messages) to players that are okay with OOC(out of character) talk. Note that players have created wars that literally changed the map, and they have control over politics, cities, houses(guilds), and many other things. It's an amazingly well done game that's always being edited. There was even a class that was just released a week or two ago. Anyways, go ahead and enjoy the list I've compiled. There should be something for everyone, if you're looking a new free MMO. It took me a few hours to find all of them when I was doing my search, and I went through quite a few bad games. This should help out and save everyone some time.
