Top 10 Lists: The Top 10 Best Platform Games I've Played
Since 1981, there have been Platform games, and some where good, and some where bad. Here is a list of the 10 I like:
#10: Pitfall! (2600)
Pitfall was the first platform game ever made, and it's still fun. You play as Pitfall Harry, and you work your way through screens, collecting treasures while avoiding aligators, tires, and other obsticles. It features a lot of the basic elements of Platform games, like the jumping and the pits of death, and paved the way for Super Mario Bros.
#9: M.C. Kids (NES)
M.C. Kids is a strangly enjoyable platform game. This game is basicly an adventisement for McDonald's, but it's got Super Mario Bros. 2 Gameplay behind it, so it actualy a fun game. You work your way through levels like most other platform games, collecting a special card in each level on the way in order to move onto the next stage. This game can be bought cheaply, so it's worth a look if you have an NES.
Though it's outdated graphicaly, Super Mario Land is still fun. Instead of rescueing Peach from Bowser, you rescue Daisy (Yes, this is the first appearence of Daisy) from Tantanga! It feels a lot like Super Mario Bros., except just a little easier (Though it does have some tricky parts).
#7: Mega Man 5 (NES)
MM5, though it's not quite a platform game, was still fun. It, like other Mega Mans games, combinds Platform games with shooting and (The trademark of MM games) taking the power of the bosses you defeat. It's by far the hardest of all Mega Man games, and featured some interesting bosses (Like Charge Man) and a interesting plot twist toward the end (I won' t mention it. You'll just have to play and see...)
SM64DS is fun, but could be improved a bit. It's a remake of Super Mario 64, except you can play as Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario in addition to Mario. It's controls using the D-Pad arn't as bad as everyone says (I've come to like it more then the old setup from the N64 version). In this game, you explore worlds, completing tasks to collects Power Stars, so you can open up more worlds and eventuly get to fight Bowser (Not once, but 3 times!). It's fun, and collecting all 150 Power Starts adds to the replay value.
Wario Land II is the next game in the Wario Land series. It features something new to platform games: No Lives and no "Game Over" screens! However, that doesn't make it any easier. Now enemy attacks will send you flying backward and you'll lose coins, and some will transform Wario into special forms (Like Fire Wario, Flat Wario, Fat Wario, Zombie Wario, etc.). The main thing is exploring through stages, finding treasures, and even different paths and secret exits! This game features multiple endings, many treasures, and different paths, so it will take you a few months to finish this completely.
This is actualy a fun platform game. In this game, you play as Peach, and you rescue Toads (and Luigi) while on your way to Bowser's Villa, where you'll fight Bowser to rescue Mario! One new feature to platform games is the Vibes, where you tap a icon on the touch screen to change Peach's emoton. WIth her "Magical Mood Swings", she can fly and blow away dust and fog (Joy), restore her HP (Calm), run faster and make plants grow by crying (Gloom), and burn things and increse her weaght (Rage). Also, it feels like an old Mario game, but with Peach, which gets it the #4 spot.
SMB3 was the best Mario game on NES. It's got the basic "Rescue Peach from Bowser!" storyline, and same gameplay as the 1st Mario game, except one difference: This has somewhere around 100 levels (I can't remember exactly how many), and it featured the Koopalings (Rumored to be Koopa Kid's cousins). Also, it featured some of the best level designs I have ever seen, which gets it the #3 spot.
Banjo-Kazooie, even if it did introduce my least favorate feature of newer platform games (The "Collect tuns of stuff" style game), it's still a blast. You explore levels, linked together by Gruntilda's Lair, collecting Jiggies (Golden puzzle peices) and Music Notes in order to open up new levels and work your way to the final battle aganst Gruntilda. It's an enjoyable experence (And one of the best N64 games I've played).
This is by far the best 2D Platform game I've played. It's like other 2D Sonic Games, except for one thing: It's the longest Sonic game, with a grand total of 14 levels. Each character (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) have their own unique moves, and even their own paths to explore (Possibly finding Special Stages or other good stuff). The amount of replay value (Getting all the Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds and playing through as all 3 characters) in this game make it the best 2D Platform game ever.
There you have it, The 10 Platform games I like. An couple of honerable mentions are Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but I didn't have enough room for eigher of them.
