T2: The Arcade Game
Review by gamelunatic
"It may not have all the qualities of a good game, but overall it's still fun to play."
Ever seen Terminator 2? Who doesn't remember the T-1000 chasing the Terminator and John Connor down the highway? Or when the T-1000 shattered into countless icy pieces and came back only to be destroyed in a fiery pit of lava? Maybe you played the T2 arcade game or a port on the Genesis or Super Nintendo (terrible). I only played the game once in the arcade but I love the Genesis port. Now how does the Game Boy port hold up?
Graphics: 7/10
What can you expect for a 1992 black and white game? The graphics are just ok, each thing being distinctive enough to tell what is what. Really the only part in the game where visuals might be a problem is in the second stage, where you can easily shoot innocents by mistake. They are small and blend in with the enemies, so be careful if you don't want to lose a lot of points. Remember, the good guys move in from the right. That out of the way, things explode when you shoot them, which is cool. If you're playing the game on a GBA or GBC everything is green and black.
Sound: 3/10
Gosh, this game is very bad in the sound department. Believe it or not, the game doesn't have music whatsoever except at the title screen. The only thing you'll hear all game is the sounds of you shooting, humans and machines shooting at you, and a little sound every time you obtain a gun power-up or shield. To me it seems lazy that they couldn't have included some tunes from the arcade, Genesis or Super Nintendo counterparts.
Control: N/A
The control is very self explanatory; you move the cursor over enemies or power-ups that you shoot up. You press one button to shoot the gun and another to shoot missiles. Whatever. It's simple as that. No need to really factor it in the score.
Gameplay: 7/10
Despite the game's shortcomings in its sound, T2: The Arcade Game is fun to play. You go through each level firing away at endoskeletons, humans and other machines to get them before they get you. You will be fired at almost constantly, but luckily there are shields to be found which will protect you from some damage while you collect other power-ups. The game is rather short; it can be beaten in about fifteen minutes. All of the bosses in the game are based off of those found in the other versions of T2: TAG. And they can still be tough to beat. One level really lets you have fun blowing stuff up, as you must destroy everything in sight at Cyberdyne if you want to get the good ending to the game. The thing that makes me most happy about the gameplay is that there's not that stupid pick-up truck level :)
Replay Value: 7/10
If you liked the arcade (or Genesis) version, for the most part you will be happy with this game. It's basically just a port of an arcade game that you can keep in your pocket. However, music and a feature to save your high scores would have lifted this game higher.
Buy/Rent
Rent?! You can't find this game to rent unless you went back in time 15 years. If you want to play it, your real only option is to just buy it. Spend a few bucks for a copy.
Final Score: 24/40, or 6
