WWF Superstars
Review by EMZayas
"The one that started it all."
Intro:
WWF: Superstar is the first handheld wrestling game ever. It was released when the Gameboy was practically new, so you couldn't really expect much out of it. Even though it's a pretty old game it's still quite entertaining. This game, being the first wrestler for a handheld, started a following of many other handheld wrestling titles such as WWF: Wrestlemania 2000, WWF: Road to Wrestlemania, WCW: Mayhem, even a sequel (WWF: Superstar 2) plus many more.
Graphics:
Since this game is for the original Gameboy, there is no color to it. But that doesn't matter because the wrestlers are very big and highly detailed. You can certainly tell each wrestler from one another. The ring is looks very nice and shows the word 'Superstar' on the side of it. There's not much to the back ground. It's all black with flashes of light.( I don't know if the match is taking place outside during the night time with the flashes being stars or they're suppose to be camera flashes). But as for the background I kind of like it because it makes me wonder. As for the graphics, they might be outdated but still pretty good.
Gameplay:
There are five wrestlers in WWF: Superstar which are Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Mr. Perfect, and "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase ( remember this is the first wrestling handheld so don't expect a huge roster). Each of them, besides appearance, are practically the same. They all have the same amount of moves. You have a punch button, a button to do a bodyslam, select is to toss your opponent out of the ring( which you can only do once). And if your opponent is on the floor you can grab him and either perform a punching combo or land a suplex or a piledriver. Plus a few more moves like a spinebuster and two running attacks.
Once you boot the game up your a taken to a title screen. Press start and you're at the character selection screen. There is only one gameplay mode which is a single championship where you can set a time limit and have either 1 fall or best 2 out of 3.
Sound:
There is only one gameplay song in the entire game. It doesn't even sound bad, it's actually really good and kind of catchy. Each wrestler, at the character selection screen, has there own theme song. which doesn't sound bad, either. You'll easily recognize each theme like Hogan's 'Real American' theme and the rest.
Overall:
Being the first wrestling handheld, many people might think it won't be good. But it's actually very fun and will keep you busy for a little while. If you're a fan of WWF ( now WWE) and enjoy old school wrestling games then you'll probably
like WWF: Superstar. Being the first of its kind it sure is a good start.
