"An average game that is held back by a few flaws"
Based upon the toys by Tyco Toys, The Incredible Crash Dummies for the Game Boy is a different game from the console versions.
The story is basic, and it involves the crash dummies doing several odd jobs for money which is about as far as the story telling goes.
The controls are simple and solid, but most of the games only use the D-Pad. The only trouble I had with the controls is for the fourth level where the movement control can be awkward to say the least.
Music is the area where the game shines the most, and it is easily the best part of the game. Each level has a different track and since the levels are short, each track does not over stay its welcome.
The Incredible Crash Dummies looks great, and the sprites are detailed. The animation is excellent. Each of the mini-games has a different locale that is unique looking, and the areas include factory, snow slope, building, space, and crash test course.
The game is composed of five short mini games, and the first level involves the dummy jumping off the roof of a skyscraper. The dummy must hit a target on the ground, but just hitting the target does not mean success. Instead while falling the dummy must crash through ledges and awnings to gain some cash, and a certain amount of money must be obtained to pass the level.
Second level is a driving stage where air tanks must be collected then the car must be slammed into a wall. This level has questionable hit detection where the car will sometimes come to a dead stop even if it does not hit the walls. It also does not help that some of the passages can be narrow and tough to navigate.
The third level is a skiing level where the dummy must hit fifteen flags. The level also suffers from questionable hit detection where the dummy's ski will barely hit the tree and the dummy will crash into the tree. Other times the dummy will appear to go through the tree and will not crash into the tree.
Level four has the dummy working at an ammunition factory, and the objective is to pack forty bombs. This is the only level to use both A and B along with the D-Pad, and the dummy must smash dummy parts and blow out fuses. Also hitting to many bombs instead of dummy parts leads to lost life while also in the process of shutting down one of the conveyer belt.
The fifth and final level has the dummy controlling a missile, and he must fly the missile through a cave and hit the bull's eye. This is the only terrible level of the game, and it has several problems. The biggest problem is the camera. The camera only shows a short distant in front of the missile, and if the player hits the wall, it is instant death. So progress at a steady pace is the key to success, but go to slow and the timer will run out. This level also has questionable hit detection.
Once all levels are beaten, the game restarts at level one on normal difficulty, and to see the ending the game must be beaten four times in a row which is a lot of work for a weak ending.
The game also has a two player option and only one cartridge is needed, and the players take turns. So if player one dies or beats the level, player two gets to take their turn.
The Incredible Crash Dummies is not a bad game, but it is not a great game. Overall it is a decent game that is held back by the short length and questionable hit detection.
