Introduction

Welcome to my guide for Super Hunchback! This is a Game Boy Completion Project guide. The authors writing for the GB Completion Project hope to one day have a complete FAQ for every Game Boy game listed in the GameFAQs database. If you want more information, check out the stickied Game Boy Completion Project topic on the FAQ Contributors Board.

This is a quirky and very basic little platformer for the Game Boy. That said, this game is honestly one of the best platformers I've played. That's not a joke either. The controls are beautifully clean and responsive and really add to the game, which is quite uncharacteristic of Game Boy platformers. The physics of the game is also near perfect, which works wonders for a game like this. Gameplay itself is simple but at the same time, surprisingly creative. It really is a great game.

This guide intends to provide the reader with the basics of gameplay and a complete walkthrough. I hope it proves to be helpful and informative.

Controls

As you'll see below, the controls are somewhat... basic. Okay, you only have four buttons, but this game's simplicity is one of the things that gives it its charm. Below is a list of controls. The function of each control for each section is listed to the right of it.

Basics

Below is an explanation of a variety of basic gameplay elements. All their features are given a brief overview to provide you with information that you may not know or work out just by playing, as some things can be a little deceiving in design.

Fruit

  • These are the main collectibles for points and are by far the most common. Touching them will give you a varying amount of points.

Arrows

  • These fly through the air like cannonballs do, except that they're longer and touching them will damage you.

Cannonballs

  • These fly through the air and can move either left or right. If you're hit by one, you will get knocked back and stunned for a short period of time. You can stand on them as they move through the air to use them as platforms to grab other things or get transported somewhere.

Fiery Cannonballs

  • These fly thourgh the air like cannonballs, but they can move up or down as well as left or right. Touching one will damage you

Diamonds

  • These are the most valuable items when it comes to points. They come mostly in the small variety, but can come in larger varieties where they give double the points. Touch them to collect them.

EXTRA Bombs

  • EXTRA Bombs are found when you are moving quickly through a level and replace fruit. Collecting one of each letter will grant you an extra heart of health.

Bells

  • When five of these are collected, your points multiplier will increase by one. Taking damage will lower the number of bells that you have by one. Ringing the large bells at the end of areas also count as collecting a bell.

Spikes/Fire

  • Spikes and fire are found on the ground, especially in holes or pits. They can sometimes be found on ceilings too, although this is less common. Spikes can be found in water. Touching them damages you.

Bubbles

  • These come out of cauldrons and can be used as platforms. The more times that you touch one, the more likely it is to pop. Projectiles hitting it also count as it being touched. Bubbles move up and when stood on will begin to slow down before eventually dropping. Jump when they begin dropping to make them start moving up again.

Water

  • You will drop when in water, but can move left and right as normal, but at a slower pace. Press 'A' repeatedly to move back up. Spikes are often found along the bottom of pools of water, to don't drop too far.

Ball and Chain

  • Balls swing back and forth on chains. The balls themselves can be stood on and used as a platform like normal cannonballs. If you're hit by a ball on a chain, you're knocked back and temporarily stunned.

Logs

  • Logs are only found in the first level. They roll along the ground and will knock you back and stun you if they hit you. They can be stood on, although you roll off them as they roll and you need to jump to stay on the top of them. They can be used as platforms to grab items above.

Secret Areas

  • Secret areas are found throughout Super Hunchback, generally by moving through fake walls. Inside are generally heaps of items to collect, but there's commonly dangerous elements too, so care needs to be taken.

Warps

  • These look like little black holes and although you may first think otherwise, these are actually good things to touch. Touching these will send you to the Warp Section where you have the chance to earn bonus points and even health. Sustaining damage in these sections doesn't count as damage in the main game, so don't worry too much.

Hourglass

  • When grabbed, hourglasses give you bonus time.

Heart

  • When grabbed, hearts give you bonus health.

Swinging Ropes

  • You can grab onto these ropes and swing back and forth on them. Jump off at the end of a jump to gain a lot of hang time. These are generally used to traverse larger gaps.

Buzz Saws

  • These move back and forth along the top of a platform. Touching these will damage you.

Spiked Ball and Chains

  • These act exactly like normal ball and chains, but you instead take damage when you touch the ball. For this reason, you obviously can't stand on it.

Health Mechanics

Health is displayed by the number of hearts you have left on your HUD. Whenever you take damage, you lose health and restart at the last safe space you were at. If you run out of time, you lose health and restart at the beginning of the current area. Health can be gained by earning all fruit in a section or level or by finding hearts.

Time Mechanics

The burning rope signifies the remaining time. If the rope completely burns up, you take damage and must restart the area. If you have no more health, you die. You can increase your time, by finding an hourglass. Completing an area will grant you more time.

Points & Bell Mechanics

There are a few ways to earn points. Collecting fruit and diamonds is the primary way, but completing levels and warp sections also earn you bonus points. You can raise your point multiplier by collecting a total of five bells. When you get this many, your bell number resets to zero, but you multiplier goes up by one. Your multiplier can go as high as x5.

Warp Section Mechanics

You can enter the Warp Section by touching a warp. These sections act like bonus rounds, where you can earn a few more points or even more health. Every warp section is the same. To traverse the warp section, jump from drop platform to drop platform, collecting the fruit in each gap. You continue until the last gap which has a diamond, collect the diamond then hit the bell at the end to complete it. If you collect all fruit in the section, you earn health.

Warps appear at random. It's suspected that if you are moving quickly through a level, these are more likely to appear, similar to EXTRA Bombs.

Walkthrough

Below is the walkthrough, giving a step by step guide to all of the levels found in Super Hunchback. Each level (excluding level 4) is broken up into areas. Ringing the large bell at the end brings you to the next area.

Area 1

Jump up and grab the first piece of fruit above you. Move under the next piece of fruit and wait for a log to roll by. When it does, time your jump so that you land on it then jump off of it up into the piece of fruit to collect it. Continue along, jumping up and grabbing each piece of fruit, using a log when you have to. Don't let yourself get hit by the logs. Although it doesn't damage you, it's wasting time. Once you reach the end, jump up and touch the bell to ring it. You'll proceed to the next area.

Area 2

Jump onto the first stump. Jump to the next one, collecting the fruit as you go. Jump off the very right edge to grab the two pieces above you to your right, then drop down to the ground. Drop down into the small hole next to the stump that you just jumped off to collect a little more fruit. Jump back out and continue right, to the next stump. The gap to the right of this stump has spikes in it, so don't fall into it. Jump over it to the next stump. Drop down into the next hole as it has more fruit. Jump out, collect the last piece of fruit and hit the bell to proceed.

Area 3

Logs now appear from both sides of the screen. Use the logs to jump up and grab all the fruit at the first part of the area. Once you've got it all, continue along. You'll find that the logs will bounce off of each other and some will get stuck between two other logs. Use the logs as platforms to the rest of the fruit throughout this small area. Once you have it all, hit the bell at the end to proceed.

Area 4

Time your jump towards the rope so that it's swinging towards you as you move towards it. Grab on and swing from side to side, collecting two fruit. You'll notice that you don't grab the fruit directly under where the rope is tethered. If you drop from the rope as you swing toward the fruit in such a way that you grab the fruit, you'll drop down through a gap in the spikes of the pit into a secret area below. Alternatively, you can simply jump over the pit and hit the bell at the end.

Secret Area

In this secret area is an Hourglass which will give you extra time. You can grab this without any danger. The other items must be collected carefully or you can easily lose the game. Jump and grab the fruit to your right. Grab the two diamonds below it and move right as you fall. You should land on a platform above and to the right of another diamond. From there, jump to the platform above and to your left. Run left along it then drop off the edge and grab the Heart. As soon as you grab it, move to the right as you fall. You should grab the bell and then land underneath the platform that you dropped off. If you don't move to the right enough, you will fall into the spikes below. Grabbing the Heart may be too hard. If it is, just grab the bell and drop to the platform below.

From there, run right along the platform then jump to the platform above and to your right. You'll grab the Diamond as you jump. Jump to the platform above and to your left, then jump to the platform to your right (you have to be on the very edge of the platform when you jump to reach the platform. Grab the Diamond on it. Move right then jump up the shaft, collecting the two Diamonds and two Bells as you do. When you reach the top, jump out of the hole and ring the bell to proceed to the next area.

Area 5

Observe how close the wooden platform gets to you and time your jump so that you land on it when it's closest. Make sure you grab the fruit during your jump. Stay on the platform until you've jumped up and collected all the fruit, then jump to the next one. Make sure you've anticipated the platform's movement beforehand, otherwise you may fall short. Grab the fruit above then take a running jump off of the platform onto the solid ground when the platform's closest. Ring the bell.

Area 6

Move right and jump onto the lowest platform. There are cannonballs here. You can jump and land on them as they fly through the air, but if you get hit by one, you get temporarily stunned. Collect the fruit to the left of the platform, jump back onto the platform and grab the fruit above. Use the cannonballs as platforms to grab any fruit that you can't grab without it, then jump from platform to platform until you've reached the end. On the platform below the bell, jump off of it and grab the diamond above and to your left. Land on the platform to your left, jump back to the final platform and then ring the bell to complete the level.

Area 1

There is a cannon firing cannonballs directly up to your right. First, grab the fruit above the ledge to your right. Now take a running jump over the cannon to the next platform, timing your jump so that you don't touch any of the cannonballs. Cannonballs will begin firing from the right, so watch out for these ones too. Collect the fruit above the platforms and jump from platform to platform. Make sure that you don't get hit by any of the cannonballs as you do. Continue until the end of the area and hit the bell to proceed.

Area 2

Proceed the same as the previous area, but you've now got cannonballs firing from the left too. There's also a warp at the beginning of the area, assuming that you were quick enough in the previous area. After you've jumped over the first gap, you can enter the next secret area.

Secret Area

I can't believe that I accidentally stumbled upon this one. You need to jump into the next gap in such a way that you slide down the right wall of the gap. Keep pushing the Right button as you slide down and you'll move into the wall. Careful that you don't touch the spikes in the gap as you try and perform this. Now that you're in, move right and you'll drop down into the secret area. Push Left as you drop so that you don't land in spikes. A neat area, right?

From there, you can drop down into the spikeless hole to your left and grab the diamond. Jump up the platforms on the left side of the room to grab a bell in the top left corner of the area. Continue right, along the top platforms to collect an Hourglass, a diamond and a bell (you need to use the cannonballs as a platform to reach the bell).

Move along the lower sections for another diamond, bell and a heart in the centre of the room. Once you've collected everything, move back to the top right corner of the room where one of the bells was. Jump up into the ceiling to find that it's also able to be moved through. Once you're inside the wall, move left and jump up the bricks. You'll see an unbroken line of gaps between bricks signalling where the path is. Jump up through the brick blocks until you're out of the area. Once you're out, jump over the gap and ring the bell.

Area 3

Once again, jump between the gaps, using the cannonballs as platforms where need be. You can use them to get up near the ceiling to grab the fruit up there if you want, but be careful that you don't get caught between the ceiling and the cannonball, or you'll lose health. Ring the bell at the end of the area to proceed.

Area 4

Throughout this area you need to be cautious of the fairly common fiery cannonballs. You can't touch these at all or you lose health. Move right, over the gaps until you reach the end. Collect the fruit as you go and the bell at the end. Jump onto the platform above. Jump across the platforms along this level then jump to the platform above and to the right of the platoform on the far left side. Collect the diamond above. Jump to the next platform then jump immediately off onto the platform above and to the right as the platform you're currently on will begin to drop quickly. From there, jump back left and collect the bell. Land on the platform that drops then immediately jump back and ring the bell to complete the level.

Area 1

This area introduces arrows and bubbles. Touching arrows at all will cause you damage, so stay well away. Bubbles can be stood on for a short time before they pop. When not touched, they float upwards, and begin to stop moving upwards whilst being stood on before eventually dropping from the weight. Both arrows and cannonballs appear from both sides of the screen and move both ways.

Move right, collecting the fruit, using the bubbles as temporary platforms and watching out for arrows and cannonballs. Once you've jumped over the first two cauldrons, you'll notice bells above the next two gaps. Use a cannonball to jump up and grab them if you want. Continue on and ring the bell.

Area 2

This area introduces the ball and chain. The ball swings back and forth on the chain. You can stand on the swinging ball and use it as a platform, but if you're hit by it, you'll get thrown back and stunned, but not damaged.

Drop into the water before the first ball and chain to grab the bell there if you want. Don't drop too far down or you'll get hurt by the spikes. Jump out onto the platform left of the water. Wait for the ball to swing away from you then jump to the next platform and immediately drop into the water and collect the bell. Jump back out and jump onto the ball. Jump up from the ball and grab the diamond where the chain is connected to the wall. Grab the bell in the next pool of water. Continue on.

You'll come upon another ball and chain. Drop into the three pools of water to collect the bells if you want to. Use the ball and chain itself to collect the fruit, the bell where the chain is connected to the ceiling and the bell and diamond above and to either side of the ball and chain. Jump off of the ball when it reaches its peak on either side to collect these. Once you're done, continue on and hit the bell at the end.

Area 3

Jump over the first pool of water (it doesn't contain anything) and the gap too. Watch out for cannonballs that might hit you into the gap. Continue on. Use the bubbles coming out of the cauldron as a platform to grab the diamond near the ceiling.

Secret Area

You can actually jump onto a bubble, then keep hopping on it to allow it to keep floating up. When you are just beneath the ceiling you can jump up through it and into the area above.

There are a lot of diamonds and bells in this area, as well as a couple of hourglasses and a heart. Grab them all, watching out for the cannonballs. There is a secret path above the top right cannon. Jump into the wall there and move left. Drop into the secret area (It's a Secret Area within a Secret Area! Secret Area-ception!) and collect the bell and heart. Move right, through the wall at the bottom to get back out. To get out of the entire secret area just move onto the right corner of the bottom platform and you'll drop through to the platform below. Ring the bell to move to the next area.

Area 4

Jump over the bubbles and jump over the gaps, collecting all of the collectibles. When you reach the end, back track to the bubbles. Jump onto one and when it begins to start dropping, jump so that it begins moving up again. Do this again, then jump to the next bubble floating up to your side. Ride this one to the top then jump onto the platform to your right.

Jump over the gaps to your right, collecting the collectibles above the gaps. When you reach the end, grab the heart there. Backtrack and use the bubbles in the same way that you did before to until you reach the ceiling. Jump from the bubbles to the platform to your left and grab the hourglass and heart above the platform. Jump back onto the bubbles and ride them to the top again. Jump onto the platform to your right.

Jump right from platform to platform once again. The platforms are a lot smaller here, so be careful. Be especially careful of getting hit by cannonballs. Grab the two collectibles above the two small platforms then backtrack to the bubbles.

Ride the bubbles to the top, then use the cannonballs from the right side to hit you to the platform on the left. Grab the collectibles on the platform there, then jump back onto the bubbles. Ride them to the top then jump onto the platform on the right.

Do the exact same thing here. Jump over the bubbles and collect the items on the small platform to your right. Ride the bubbles up, get hit by cannonballs to send you flying onto the platform on your left. Ride the bubbles again then jump to the platform on the right. Move right along the platform and hit the bell to complete the level.

Level 4

Note: There is only one very large area in this level, therefore it's not split into smaller parts.

This level is full of icy platforms, so be sure to compensate for sliding. Jump onto the platform to your right. Hop on it to stop it from dropping too far. Anticipate when the rope will swing over to you and jump so that you grab it at the end. If you grab it and higher up you won't be able to jump to the next platform. Let the rope swing as far to the right as possible, then jump off onto the platform to your right. Take a running jump off of this platform over the spikes and into the water.

Drop down to the bottom and start swimming up so that you don't hit the spikes. Keep tapping 'A' over and over and over again as you move left along the ceiling of the area. When you reach the surface on the left side, swim up and out of the water. Jump onto the platform to your left. Don't break the surface at the centre of the hole as you may get hit by a water drop which will just push you back under water.

Jump to the platform to your left, making sure that you time your jump so that you don't get hit by a water drop. Repeat this again. Now drop into the water to your left. Drop down and begin swimming just before you hit the spikes at the bottom. Swim right along the top of the area and then swim up out of the water at the end and onto the platform.

Drop into the water and grab the two bells in there if you want, but don't touch the spikes at the bottom. Jump onto the platform floating on the surface of the water and use it to grab the hourglass. Jump onto the platform to the right of it when you're ready to continue.

Jump down the hole onto the platform on the water to your right. Don't bother with entering the water here as there's nothing to collect. Jump from floating platform to floating platform as they come close to each other until you reach the end. When you do jump up and grab the hourglass above the hole then drop down. You'll land on a platform floating up and down.

This part's a b**ch. Wait until the platform you're on's about halfway up to the top, then jump to the next platform. If it's higher, you'll hit the ceiling and won't make it to the platform. If it's lower, you won't be able to jump far enough. I wouldn't worry to much about the collectibles in this area. There are bells above each platform, but there are spikes above these, so be cautious if you jump up to grab these. You may find it easier to just swim through the water here, but don't forget that the parts with water pouring from above will push you down, so you need to press 'A' quicker there. When you've made it to the right side of the level, jump onto the final platform and ring the bell to finish it.

Area 1

Anticipate when the first rope will swing toward you and jump so that you grab the end. When you swing as far right as it goes, jump and grab onto the end of the second rope. Swing right and jump off onto the platform. If you grab the rope higher up it's unlikely that you'll reach the platform when you jump. Ring the bell to proceed.

Area 2

Wait for the ball and chain to swing away from you, then jump onto the platform to your right. Make sure you jump off of the very edge of the platform or you'll fall in the fire. Jump to the next platform, jumping over the ball and chain at the same time. Continue to the next platform so that you're out of range of it. Be very careful not to be hit by the ball otherwise it's quite likely that you'll be pushed into the fire.

There's a second ball of chain. Stand on the very edge of the platform before it. As soon as it appears on screen, move back and take a brief run up. Jump over the platform then continue over the ball and chain and the other platforms until you're on the other side. Hit the bell to proceed to the next area.

Area 3

Simple area. Jump over each gap, collecting fruit until you reach the end. Ring the bell at the end. There are cannonballs firing from both sides here, including fairly common fiery ones. Be careful

Area 4

There are cannons firing cannonballs from both sides here, as well as from below. The ones fired from below are fiery cannoballs, so touching them at all will cause you to lose health. Jump right, along the platforms. Be careful of the cannonballs from all sides. Collect the fruit as you go and remember that you can use the cannonballs firing from your left as platforms to grab the more valuable items. Jump up to the platform above and to your right at the right end.

Continue jump to higher and higher platforms, this time moving left. Again, collect fruit and other items, using the cannonballs as platforms if need be. When you reach the left end jump up and grab the diamond above. Start jumping right to higher and higher platforms. Collect the items above each platform here as they're very valuable. Make sure you jump off the very edge of the platform on your last jump as you won't make it otherwise. Ring the bell at the end to complete the level.

Area 1

This area adds buzz saws to the mix. Touching this will damage you, as one would expect. Move right, dodging the cannonballs (a lot of which are fiery), jumping over the buzz saws and collecting fruit as you go. Grab the diamond and the bell at the end, then ring the bell to proceed.

Area 2

Guillotines are introduced in this area. Touching them at any time will damage you. They slowly raise up until they reach the ceiling, then drop down, damaging anything below them. This then repeats.

Move right and jump over the buzz saw. When the guillotine begins rising back up, drop down into the hole that it drops into, grab the bell and jump back out before it drops. Continue. Jump over the next buzz saw and repeat what you did before for this guillotine. Repeat once more for the next buzz saw and guillotine then grab the diamond just past it. Jump over the final buzz saw and ring the bell to move to the next area.

Area 3

A scarier variation of the ball and chain appears in this area, the spiked ball and chain. Instead of just being knocked back and stunned, the spiked ball instead damages you if it touches you, so be extremely careful.

Immediately begin jumping across the platforms as soon as the spiked ball begins swinging away from you. Jump over the spiked ball itself on the jump over the second gap and continue until you're out of range of it. Take a large jump over the next gap and you'll see that there's another spiked ball. Move past this one in the same way, jumping up in the centre to grab the diamond first if you want to. Once you're out of range, once again jump to over the next gap to find yet another spiked ball. Move past it in the same way, jumping up in the centre to grab the bell first if you want to. Once you're out of range, move right and ring the bell.

Area 4

This area's fairly simple. Just jump over the buzz saws and gaps and dodge the cannonballs moving left until you reach the end, grabbing the fruit as you go. Ring the bell to proceed.

Area 5

Move through this area in the same way as the previous one, but you may wish to use the cannonballs as platforms to grab the bells above the gaps and above the platform at the end. Be careful as the cannonballs fly lower here and come from both sides. Ring the bell at the end when you reach it.

Area 6

Jump up onto the platform above you to your right. Wait for the platform to your right to float left and jump onto it. Let it float right and jump off. Jump over the buzz saw and jump to the platform to your right, being careful not to land on the next buzz saw. Jump past it, being careful not to hit the ceiling and get pushed onto it. Jump to the next platform then begin jumping left along the higher platforms. Jump over the buzz saw and make sure that you don't hit your head on the platforms above or you may not complete the jump.

Make sure that you don't try and jump left to the platform that has the hourglass in the gap before it and instead wait for the moving platform to your right to move left. Jump onto it, let it move right then jump onto the next moving platform to your right. Don't forget to watch out for cannonballs whilst you're doing this. Let it move right and jump onto the static platform. Jump right to the platform next to the wall.

Begin jumping left along the higher platforms. Watch out for cannonballs from both sides, but especially the fiery cannonballs being shot right. Grab the hourglass above the first one you jump to. Land and jump off of the small platforms that drop immediately. Continue until you reach the left side.

Wait for the moving platform to move left then jump on. Collect the item above it, let it move right and jump onto the next moving platform. Grab the item above, let it move right and jump onto the static platform, watching out that you don't land on the buzz saw. Jump over the buzz saw, collecting the bell and move right. Jump over the gap, grab the diamond, watch out for cannonballs and ring the bell to complete the level!
