"Has Mario ever been in a bad game?"

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins is (obviously) the sequel to Super Mario Land, and the improvements that have been made over the prequel are astounding. It offers more, better designed levels, vastly improved graphics, and more long-term playability. It's still one of the better titles to be found on the game-boy.

The story goes something like this. Whilst Mario was off fighting the aliens from SML the evil guy Wario got all high and mighty and decided to take over Mario's castle and the rest of the kingdom. The six coins used to open the castle were distributed all over the land. You, as Mario had to retrieve all six coins, make your way into the castle and boot Wario out!

By game-boy standards the graphics of Six Golden Coins are starting to look dated, but they're still not bad. There's a reasonable amount of detail, and they're always very clear. In SML Mario was very small, he took up very little space on the screen and it made playing the game rather difficult. In SGC this problem has been rectified and Mario is finally a decent size, it's much easier to see what you're actually doing. The enemies and various characters are fairly detailed and look nice, all of the backgrounds are simply done, just the usual sky, clouds and sparse inamanate objects. Considering what the developers had to work with, the graphics are above average and are certainly no eyesore.

The sound is the usual from a game featuring Mario. For the most part there are bright boppy tunes that really help in creating a lighter mood, it's tough to tire of these melodies, and you might even find yourself humming along absent-mindedly to one or two of them. The sound effects are also the usual, there's the springy noise that's made when you jump, the little boing of landing on an enemy, and many other FX to that extent. None of them ever seem out of place and it's tough to get sick of these as well. Six Golden Coins is definitely no ear-bleeder.

The gameplay is very good, there is a lot of variety in the levels rather than the usual jump from platform to platform stuff. There's close to fifty levels, each one of them is different in style and always well designed. There are five or six well hidden secret levels to find, each filled with coins and various other goodies, finding them can be very rewarding and satisfying.
During the course of the game Mario will be swimming, flying through the air, being carried by a huge hook, taking huge jumps on the moon, even soaring through the skies inside a giant bubble!
Mario has a few new special abilities of his own, of course there's the normal big Mario, little Mario, fireball Mario, but if you manage to get hold of a carrot then he'll sprout rabbit ears and get the ability to glide slowly through the air, this can be extremely useful and will save your life countless times.
If a level is finished and you manage to hit the bell at the end then Mario will be taken to a game of chance, where you play for extra lives and various power-ups, if you're an expert then you can get three lives every time a level is passed. All of the levels have a decent amount of baddies to bash if you get the primitive urge to just kill something, and at the end of every world there's a boss guarding one of the precious coins. These bosses range in difficulty and some of them can prove rather difficult to over come.
''Wario's'' castle at the end of the game is quite tough, but at the same time is a great amount of fun. Every trick that's been learnt during the course of the game must be exercised in order to make it through to Wario at the end. I myself have only reached Wario once in nearly 100 tries and he slaughtered me, it'll take a lot of persistence to become victorious.
Overall, the gameplay of SGC retains the platforming perfection of other Mario titles and adds enough new elements to give it real depth.

The challenge of this game is nearly perfect. The learning curve is great, the player is eased into the game before they tackle some of the harder levels. There's even an easy mode that the less experienced players can try their hand at. Whilst some situations seem overly difficult, there really isn't anything that can't be overcome with a bit of persistence and some lateral thinking. The only REALLY difficult section is the level at the end, but buy then the player should have enough experience to give it a decent shake.

SGC's replayability is superb. There's a stack of levels and a lot of incentive to keep playing them through. Searching for the secret levels will take a fair amount of time, earning 999 coins over and over so you can play the lotteries also adds to the lifespan. There is a helluva lot to do in this game, and you're only worry should be about having enough batteries to do it all.

The fun factor is great, all Mario games tend to be bliss to play, and this one is no exception. Some of the boss fights are so enjoyable that as soon as you beat them you'll reset the game just so it can be done again. Some of the levels are a bit of a chore to get through, but for the most part you should have a great time playing this game.

Overall, Six Golden Coins is still one of the best buys for your game-boy. It has perfect platforming elements, great replayability, and extraordinary depth. Getting this game or one of it's sequels (Wario Land, Wario Land 2) will keep you entertained for a long time.
