"A game that just keeps Giving"
ESRB Rating: PAL version: G+

Overview: Super Smash Brothers Melee is a game where Nintendo's All-Stars duke it out in the fighting arena. Have you ever wondered who would win in a fight between Samus Aran and Captain Falcon? what better place to find out than super smash brothers melee. Do you want to see Bowser finally beat Mario or Peach get revenge on Bowser this is place where that can happen. Do you want to see cute little Jigglypuff beat the snot out of the King of Evil Ganondorf? Ness the psychic from Onett whoop Donkey Kong? Super Smash Brothers Melee is where all your wildest Nintendo fantasies can come to life.
There is no storyline to this game but it is speculated that the weak storyline of the first game on the Nintendo 64 is present. That story is pretty much a kid is playing with his toys and making them fight but this is not official. Fighting games like this one don't need a real storyline because all it is is a cross over game and plus when have you ever known nintendo to give you a good storyline or any storyline at all? So Super Smash Brothers Melee's story is Non Applicable.
The Graphics aren't anything astounding like those of Starfox Adventures but they are ok. The game was rushed to be out near the Gamecube's release so some things are left a little iffy and the Graphics were one of them. The Graphics are nice though really nice but for certain characters such as Donkey Kong they looked a little plastic and then in other games such as Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and Starfox Adventures they were so furry and realistic but these Graphics suit the game. The graphics are the games only real flaw and they are so minuscule that it doesn't matter.
Super Smash Brothers Melee's gameplay is different to that of other fighting games because opposed to the regular "HP meter" for an extra challenge you have the smash meter which you need to rack up to smash your opponents away. But items add to the fun and changes the gameplay more having to get items or avoid ones already set to trap you! The stages are all different and are all played differently, in some stages they change form (Pokemon Stadium) and in some they move around. Some stages also have enemies flying around that can rack up your damage meter but they can also be smashed away. To further add to the gameplay alternatives you have special melees which change the way the game is played completely like Giant melee makes all your characters giants making it harder to smash them away or if your looking for a quick match play instant death and you both start with 700% damage. The gameplay is always fresh and fun.
There are 25 (26 including shiek) characters in the Super Smash brothers melee 19 of which are original and 6 of which are clones that play differently. With such a diverse range of characters the characters gets 10/10. The game has a lot of Mario, Zelda and Pokemon characters and only a few Metroid, DK, F-Zero and Mother characters as well as a tonne of Japan exclusive characters and Retro characters. Some of the characters movesets are a little boring like Pichu he is a Pikachu clone and plays very similar to Pikachu and he damages himself and Dr Mario plays just like mario kinda boring. But characters such as the Ice Climbers who have to fight as a team and Zelda and Shiek who have to transform into each other in the middle of battle make up for that. The characters are Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and Dr Mario from the Mario series, Yoshi from the Yoshi series, Donkey Kong from the Donkey Kong series, Zelda, Shiek, Link, Young Link and Ganondorf from the Zelda series, Pikachu, Pichu, Jigglypuff and Mewtwo from the Pokemon series, Marth and Roy from the Fire Emblem series, Samus from the Metroid Series, Captain Falcon from the F-Zero series, Kirby from the Kirby series, Mr Game and Watch from the Game and Watch handhelds, Ice Climbers from the NES game Ice climber, Fox and Falco from the Starfox series and Ness from the Earthbound series. Each character has his or her own individual taunt which is fun to well Taunt your opponents with.
Some characters that were removed early in production of this game where Balloon Fighter (his music can still be heard in the Icycle Mountain stage) from the game Balloon Fight on the NES, Mach Rider from the game Mach rider on the NES and Sigrud from the Fire Emblem series. Balloon Fighter was even in the beta version of the game until being removed for the Ice Climbers. Solid Snake was also going to be in this game but Hideo Kojima asked to late and the game was already half through production so he will be instead added in the sequel Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
There are also a series of levels each of which are unique and fun. Some levels are biased towards some characters but most stages are fair. Only a few stages from Super Smash Brothers on the Nintendo 64 and the popular Saffron City and Peach's Castle are not among them. Some of the levels move and are better suited towards faster characters (Mute City, Big Blue, Poke Float and Rainbow Road), others change around and are better for good jumping characters (Pokemon Stadium, the metroid stages) and some have enemies flying around that rack up your damage meter but can also be destroyed themselves (Super Mario Bros 2 and Yoshi's Story). There are also several unlockable stages. Most stages are suited to certain characters, the stage which you unlock a secret character on is a stage suited for them or in Roy's case a stage which hadn't been used by some one else.
The game also has a lot of extras such as the trophys which are obtained through beating the game with a certain character, performing certain events, collecting them in adventure mode or event matches and buying them in the trophy lottery. The trophys each contain a little bit of information about the thing the trophy is of but they don't really do anything and are there as something to collect for fun and teach you about Nintendo's history although some of the Information is incorrect such as Donkey Kong's trophy information. Secret characters are present in this one too which are unlocked in fun and some times annoying ways (like Falco he was annoying to unlock). Certain Stages can also be unlocked adding a gameplay element and a fairness level. Also and illustrious All star mode can be unlocked by beating the game with every character, in All star mode you have to use one character with 1 life and beat every other character in the game, fun but annoying and sometimes difficult.
With all the bonus modes and stages multiplayer is never boring and it's always fun to try a new character. You may also want to collect all the trophys or complete the event matches which are battles against certain characters and you have to beat them in a certain way, these can be difficult for new users but are a fun way to practice and something to do when you are bored. There are 51 event matches in total. This game can never get bored because there is always something new to do even when your not battling you can do the home run contest and smash the sandbag away as far as you can with the home run bat or break the targets with each character's individual target test (This is a very good place to practice Young Link's Wall Jump manoeuvre)
The sound and music in this game is to be expected of a Nintendo game, it's superb. The music for each level is different and a remix of a classic Nintendo song or the song it's self. You can also listen to all the songs in the Sound Test. There was only one song in the game that I didn't like and that was the DK rap on Kongo Jungle (I think) it sounded nothing like the version in Donkey Kong 64 and was done in a very ugly way. When you beat a game with a certain character they get their own victory music such as Young Link gets the song from the Kokori Forest in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Dr Mario gets the Dr Mario theme (Sakurai the director of the game once stated that Dr Mario was only added as an excuse for him to add that music)
This game is without a doubt the best multiplayer game of the current generation. Play against your friends or in a tournement with or without items for hours of fun play with different characters, play on different stages, play in different modes, it just doesn't stop giving.

Are you joking? Of course you should buy this game! It's been out for 5 years so if you haven't brought it now you must have been crazy! There is no better game on the Gamecube than this one.
