18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker
Review by Dubble_G
"18 Wheeler=18 Minutes of Fun"
18 Wheeler-American Pro Trucker, from the Sega Arcade vault was released on the Gamecube.
Now let me tell you, after reading the score, there is not much need to read this review, but here's one anyway!
Gameplay-18 wheels under your gas pedal, freeways and cars to smash to pieces, and rivals to race-sounds fun doesn't it? But it's not fun. It's mild brainless destruction, and slow paced racing. It is fun to a certain extent, until the recycled backgrounds, and vehicles make the best of you, and you don't feel like playing anymore. The main game is to pick from one of four trucks-(yes a Gamecube game, yet they only put on 4 trucks? come on, 12 at least SEGA!) and pick from a variety of trailer loads for the back of your rig. You can pick a chick, tough dude, disco guy, and someone else, the average random crew. The load choices are pretty neat, like logs, are cars. The heavier loads are worth more cash value, but slow you down. The goal is to make it across parts of the U.S. racing arcade like, and the total distance is split into 4 timed race sections. A rival races against you constantly, and without him there would be little challenge throughout the game. (Though there still isn't very much.) You try to make it through the 4 sections while keeping your trailer safe because if it is damaged it loses cash value. Make it through the checkpoints, and in all full campaign will take you 20 minutes or less. A parking challenge mini game happens after each one for extended fun too. But racing at a BLAZING 55 mph, wears out too quickly.-5
If you insist on this game, please rent it only. Discourage companies from releasing shoddy games. Overall-5
Audio-Take the scratchy annoying voice of a bus driver, some funk country music, and some radio distortion noise, and put it in a blender-That's about what you'll be hearing throughout the game. Yep, don't think anyone here would desire any of those audio choices, but that's what's offered here.-4
Graphics
The meat and potatoes of this game, they left much to be desired, but provide about a top notch N64 game in quality. Now that's not always a bad thing-(Forsaken 64, Donkey Kong 64, anybody?) Truck models are fine, and some cool background effects like dust and tornadoes switch the stuff up a bit. Traffic cars are pretty boxy, and so are houses, but they pass. The cool thing is how you can interact with them by smashing them to bits. Instant brainless fun. The landscape is your averae country plains, plus some cities and roads.-6
Fun Factor-At first it seems pretty fun-7 but this is short lasted so it scores a 5
Lastability-The only prize for playthroughs is an unlockable vehicle-I'd say it's worthwhile since it would only take an hour. 2 player, and time trials add a bit more, but it scores a -5
