"A game that's not quite as fun as gouging one's own eyes out..."
Yeah yeah, we know, it's a racing game and it has no story.
6/10... The graphics during the one played modes are decent, but the second this game goes into split screen action... YECK!! You see a huge drop in the frame rate, and the already difficult to see oncoming traffic becomes nearly invisible. The Gamecube is capable of so much more than this bland stuff. The one bright spot though, would have to be the way the cars are damaged.. which is without it's own flaws as well (I'll elaborate later).
2/10... BOOOOOOO!! Burnout is home to some of the weakest car sounds I have heard since the days of Pole Position. The crashes sound like some guy smashed a couple of Hot Wheels together in front of a personal memo recorded... not good stuff to say the least. As for the music, well, if you enjoy generic, pulse pounding crap rock, then this stuff is for you. Bad Burnout, bad...
1/10... Is it really that bad?? Yes, sadly, Burnout is that bad of a game. Once you get past what Acclaim calls the greatest crashes ever (hardly)... there isn't much to do, other than watch those crashes in a horrible replay mode that gives you very little control of the camera. Sure, you can unlock a few new cars in the one player mode... but you won't want to... as the cars are not nearly reward enough to play this dreadful game for a moment longer. Getting back to those crashes for a moment, seeing as they bugged the hell out of me, I must say that they are cool at first... until you realize that if you were to go play GTA3, you would see much more elaborate and realistic crashes. 99 out of 100 times in Burnout, you car will land on it's wheels after a crash, something that peeved me like nothing else... not to mention that play comes to a complete halt when you crash, killing any kind of fun you were having (if somehow you were having any). It's all rather abysmal really.
Rent or Buy
Neither... Please, for your own safety... avoid Burnout like the plague. This is one of the most horrible games I have ever played... and I've played War Gods (another gem). You owe it to yourself to not play this game. If for some reason you decide to give it a try even after reading this, then I pity you dearly. Simply put, this is probably the worst game ever put onto a really tiny disc.
