Debug - S3K
Start a 1-player game on AIZ and grab a swing.While swinging, press left left left right right right up up up. You will hear a ring sound if entered correctly. Then pause and press A to return to the title screen. Press down twice to highlight the sound test you unlocked and press start. Select Mushroom Hill and do the same thing on the first thing you can hang on to (like the swing vines in AIZ). Do the same 3 left 3 right 3 up pause and press A. Go to the sound test and simply hold down A while selecting a level. Also while on level select, press C to change character. 00 = Sonic & Tails 01 = Sonic 02 = Tails 03 = Knuckles

Knuckles in Sonic 2 Debug Code
The debug code for Sonic 2 and Knuckles is different to normal Sonic 2. When in the level select screen, which is accessed by pressing Up (x3), Down(x3), Left, right, left, right, then holding the button which is the equivalent of the Mega drive A Button and pressing start, go to the sound test section and play the following sounds, using the Mega Drive B button:
1, 9, 9, 4, 1, 0, 1, 8
Then select the level you wish to debug and hold the mega drive A button, then press start. The Debug controls are:
Mega Drive A: Cycle sprites
Mega Drive B: Toggle between knuckles and sprite

Sonic The Hedgehog- Debug Mode

Stage select

Super Tails
Contrary to most peoples beliefs, Super Tails is real and you can get him in a legitimate way. To start off, you must be playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Second, you must be playing as only Tails. During the first half of the game (The Sonic 3 half) You must obtain all 7 chaos emeralds. This means you must have them all by the end of Launch Base zone. Once you start Mushroom Hill zone, if you have all the emeralds, you will see Knuckles jump out of a secret cave. (You can't miss it) Push the switch and enter the giant ring, if you notice, the ring is glowing several colors, not just gold. Enter it and you will see a cutscene where the 7 emeralds take thier places alongside the Master Emerald. Now, every time you enter a giant ring, you will be teleported to that room. Simply step on an emerald and pass the level to obtain a Super Emerald. Once you have all 7 Super Emeralds, that's it. The master emerald will twinkle and you can become Super Tails! Just collect 50 rings and hit the jump button in mid-air. Super tails runs faster, jumps higher, is invincible, but I think the best part is: the fact that he has tiny attack birds! These birds will kill anything on screen for you. During boss fights, just sit back and watch, they will do all the work if you let them. If you collect all the Super Emeralds with Sonic, he will become faster and gain a double jump ability. When Sonic performs this double jump, it kills everything on screen. If you get them with Knuckles, He will climb, run, and jump faster, and every time you stick to a wall, the screen will shake and you will kill everything on screen.

Easter Eggs
2-player in 1- player mode on sonic 3.
Plug in two controlers and go to sonic 3, get to 1-player mode. the 2nd controler will be tails. Note: this will all be on 1 screen and only sonic can make the screen scroll. But tails does not run out of lives and he can do damage to bad guys. This should help you beat the game.

Super-Boost on lives!
In Sonic 3 or Sonic 3 and Knuckles,In the first act of Launch Base Zone, stand between the two sirens that attract the bird enemies to you, ( If playing as Sonic and Tails, use controller two and have Tails walk out of the way ) stand in the middle and move a bit to the right, just touching the second siren. Now start a spinball, but keep spinning ( Let go of A ) and if done right, the bird enemies should keep dive bombing you, and the more that are killed,the more your points rack up. Keep this up until your points rise too 10,000 for every kill, Eventually, you'll get a lives every 15 seconds! Lives that you'll need for the upcoming fight!

Debug mode in Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Go to Angel Island Zone. Get on a swinging vine and press Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, Up. You should hear a ring. Now pause and press A. You will be at the title screen. Press Up to find a Sound Test menu. Choose it. Once there, choose Mushroom Hill Zone. Go to one of those metal things you pull to lift yourself. Get on it and press Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, Up. You should hear a ring. Now pause and press A. You will be at the title screen. Go to Sound Test and highlight the level you want to debug in. Hold A and select the level.
Controls are:
B: Turn into object.
A: Scroll through objects.
C: Place objects.

Different versions of Sonic 1
In Sonic Mega Collection, the version of Sonic 1 you play is the Japanese version.
You can play the US version by pressing, on the info screen for Sonic 1, Up, Z, Down, Z, Left, Z, Right, Z. The American version differs in that the clouds don't move in Green Hill, there's no wavy water in Labyrinth, and the level select is in the wrong order.
To play another Japanese version, which fixes the bug which makes you continue to take hits when you hit spikes even if you're flashing and supposed to be temporarily invincible, hit, on the same screen, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Up, Down, Left, Right.Contributed By: SonicAD.

Sonic 1:
Level Select:
On the title screen, press 'Up, Down, Left, Right' on the d-pad. You will hear a chime. While holding the button that is the Genesis A button, press start.
Easy Emeralds:
After doing the level select code, go into the special stage and collect the emerald. Hit Z and go back to the title screen. Do this until you have all of the emeralds.
Sonic 2:
Level Select:
Go into the options menu. From there, play these sounds in the following order: '19, 65, 09, 17'. You will hear a chime. While sound effects is highlighted, press start. On the main menu, hold the button that is the Genesis A button, and press start.

Super Sonic:

Sonic & Knuckles Level Select
Begin a new game and get to the first pulley machine and hang on one of the handles and press Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, Up and listen for chime. Then press pause the game and press B to return to main menu. Next Hold Down the B button again and press Start to access the level select screen. Remember you will not be able to access all levels in that game without switching Sonic and Knuckles.

Time Freeze
This secret works only in sonic 2, sonic 3, sonic & knuckles, Knuckles in Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & knuckles.
First, you need to enter in the level select cheat for the selected game. Now, whenever you play(until you quit), press START/PAUSE, hold A, and now you can move in slow motion! A special bonus is, the clock won't run down! This is a great way to see things coming, and is epecially helpful on The Doomsday Zone in Sonic 3(& knuckles). The only problems are, to jump, you have to use X, and if you press B, you'll go back to the title screen.

Glitches
Walk through walls
On levels that allow you to travel upwards or downwards greatly as you progress as Sonic, go to an area where Knuckles' path starts. Hold down and wait for the screen to drop, then jump (do not spindash). If done correctly at a area that will cause this, the screen will shift and scroll in a loop back to you. During this time, you are free to walk through walls. This can also be done in select areas of levels where there is no path for Knuckles.

When you ride the green block accross a sea of lave, there are a couple of big blocks in front of you with rings on. If you hold the D-PAD DOWN button, Sonic will crouch. The green block will go underneath the blocks, but sonic will remain on it, and pass through the walls. Note that this ONLY WORKS WHILE CROUCHING

Slow Motion
Weird trick, but you can play this game in slow motion. First, enter the level select code, found somewhere in the list of all other codes. Then start your game in any level. When you start, press pause. Then hold down B button and try to do anything with Sonic. The game will play in slow motion as long as you hold down the B button.

Glitches
Pseudo Super Sonic
In Oil Ocean Zone, if you manage to take a hit and end up landing in one of those green-and-gold checkered cannons, you'll fall right out, but you'll be moving at twice your normal speed as well as jumping twice your normal height(with twice as much gravity). A good place for doing this would be in Oil Ocean Zone, Act 2, near the first set of pop-tops and cannons. Just jump into the semi-hidden bed of spikes on the right and land in the cannon.
Note: Moving at twice normal velocity can often get you stuck in a wall. Also, this wears off if you Super Spin Dash or Spin Dash. It also only lasts for that Act.

Super TAILS
Normally, when you turn into super sonic you lose tails behind you all the time.
Well, after you put in the debug cheat and have started a level (preferrably Emerald Hill), turn yourself into a box and place it somewhere on the floor WHILE you are super sonic. It should be a switch places box. Hit it and you will see tails will have a permanent invincible circle around him. He will stay like this through the whole level, he will keep up with super sonic or even out run him. A very fun glitch for 2 players.Contributed By: OriginalCheatFinder.

Go to the sound test (not the one on the level select) and put in 19, 65, 09, 17, 01, 01, 02, 04 (press A after each one). There won't be a confirmation sound. Start the game by pressing Start on the first option (character select) and you should have 14 continues.

Get Super Sonic on Emerald Hill
First, you enter the stage select code, shown above. Then you go into the Special Stage in the stage select menu. Every time you finish the special stage press reset and go back to the special stage. Keep doing this until you get the sixth emerald. Then you don't press reset. It will just zap you with your six emeralds into emerald hill. Get the last emerald on Emerald Hill get 50 rings and jump to be super sonic. Be careful to not run out of rings or else you will change into Sonic again. The rings start dissapearing when you are Super sonic.

Infinite Lives
First, enable the level select cheat and the debug mode which are available here. For this to work, you must choose Sonic and Tails as the players.
After entering the codes, choose any stage from the level select menu(preferrably stage 1)
As soon as you can move Sonic, hold down, and press C(don't let go of down on the D-pad). This will activate Sonic's spin; Tails will copy the Sonic spin also.
Press the B button and Sonic will become the Debug cursor.(Tails will be locked in the sonic spin move).
Press A until you(the debug cursor), displays an enemy sprite, like the monkey or that bee robot. Now that the debug cursor displays an enemy sprite, move the debug cursor to where Tails is, and repeatedly tap C.
This will produce enemies where Tails is, and since Tails is locked in the sonic spin move, he will destroy the enemies. As Tails destroys enemies in this position, press C more until the score for destroying an enemy increases from 100 to 8000 to a 1up. Once you have enough 1ups, press B again to revert to Sonic.Contributed By: JGuardiano.

When the "SEGA" screen fades, quickly press Up-up-down-down-up-up-up-up. If you have done this right, you should be able to scroll down to "Sound Test" below "Competition". The ups and downs are very difficult in the short amount of time provided, but with practice, it is pretty easy.

Sonic and Knuckles Mini-Boss Music
Make your way to the end of Act 1 of Hydrocity Zone (Zone 2). When facing the mini-boss, keep yourself underwater until the water warning music plays. Then jump out of the water.
The game should now be playing the mini-boss music from Sonic and Knuckles, which wasn't out at the time (the music was evidently included in Sonic 3 to make the backwards compatibility feature easier).Contributed By: GregHead.
Walk Thru Walls
In the Icecap Zone Act 1, when you come to a wall that only Knuckles can bust through, Hold the Down button until sonic or tails looks down, and the screen pans all the way down. Then Press up and jump at the same time. The screen will start to rotate, walk in the direction of the wall and you will walk right thru it. This only works on Act 1 of The Icecap Zone.

All 7 Chaos Emeralds & Super Sonic
To get all 7 Chaos Emeralds without having to complete their Special Stages, first enter the level select and sound test code. Go to the Sound Test and play the following tunes in order: 02, 04, 05, 06. You will hear an emerald sound if the code is entered correctly. To get Super Sonic after entering the previous code, just select any level from the level select and start it. Once you acquire 50 Rings, do a double-jump to become Super Sonic.

Infinite Lives
Get up to Launch Base Zone. Sound any of the alarms, so that the Kamikaze birds come after you. Charge up a Super Sonic Dash in between the alarm, but do not let go of the button. The birds will continually crash into you. After about 30 seconds, you will have gained enough points to get an extra life. Continue the process for as many lives as you want.

Play as Knuckles
When you have done the level select cheat go to the Stage Select screen and choose the special zone for playing Blue Sphere. Select Knuckles as your character and start, when you quit and go back to Stage Select and choose a stage, you'll be Knuckles without having to use the Sonic and Knuckles add on.

When playing any level which you have accesed using the cheat menu , pause the game and hold down B. Whilst B is held down , the game will play in slow motion mode.

Stop the platform in 'The Machine'
In Level three, The Machine, there is a moving platform where you start which takes you to either side of the area. If you stand on the platform and press up or down, the platform will stop, allowing you to get a good look around or plan your jump carefully.
