"Sonic Team has done it again."

When Sonic Heroes was first announced, many people were nervous about the new team-based gameplay: would it be a cheesy flop, or would it be an interesting feature that hit it right on the money? Turns out, the latter came true.

Graphics: 9/10

I can't complain much in this area, except for the fact that the characters look a little bit weird when they're facing the camera, although it may just be me. Other than that, everything is beautifully polished, shining better than the demo released with Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Sonic Team did a fine job here.

Gameplay: 10/10

As said before, many were skeptical about the team gameplay. It actually turned out much better than expected. The character switching is done smoothly and quickly on the fly, keeping with the fast-paced description that Sonic games have been known to keep. The three formations, Speed, Power and Flight, each have their unique assortment of moves that you HAVE to use to get through the game's 14 levels. Add to that the four different teams, each with their own characters with moves all their own, and you have pure heaven. What's more, they even their own styles of play. Team Sonic is for the classic gamer, they have the classic get-to-the-end-as-fast-as-you-can gameplay that defines Sonic games. Take Team Dark for a huge challenge, they have huge amounts of enemies and their levels are longer. If you're a casual gamer, take Team Rose. Their levels are shorter and they have easier gameplay. Team Chaotix is for the exploration junkie; they not only have to complete the level, they also have to collect certain items along the way. The levels also have quantities of paths, adding much replay value. As Rouge the Bat would say, ''How is that? Perfect, like me?''

Sound: 8/10

Sonic Team did much, much better on the music than on the Adventure games, no more vocals (except in the team themes and others), and the music actually fits the levels. The only faults: they should have at least 1) given Tails and a few other characters better voices, and 2) had included some classic music, ala Sonic Adventure. I can't complain about anything else, though.

Now for the eternal question: Rent or buy?

BUY BUY BUY!

That should be a satisfactory answer. If you don't want to buy it, rent it. Either way, you'll eventually end up buying it. The different teams' different styles of play supplies something for everyone. This is a must-have for any hardcore Sonic fan and the casual gamer alike.
