"If you like Mega Man or like an intense challenge, then this is for you!"
The Mega Man Anniversary Collection is a compilation of several classic Mega Man games. But is it any good? Read this review to find out.
The graphics are shown exactly as they were on their original systems, with no upgrades whatsoever. However, the graphics don't show much innovantion. Mega Man 1-6 look almost exactly the same, with the only upgrades being in some of the backgrounds. Mega Man 7 looks extremely good for the SNES, but Mega Man 8 looks almost exactly like Mega Man 7 despite the fact that it was originally on a much more powerful system. Mega Man 8 does have some nice traditionally animated cutsences that look nice, if a little grainy.
The sound quality improves somewhat slightly on Mega man 1-6, gets better with Mega Man 7, and reaches it's peak with Mega Man 8. All of the games have at least one catchy tune and sometimes more. Mega Man games are known for good music, and Mega Man Anniversary Collection is a good way to get to listen to all of it.
The storylines of each of the games are all somewhat different, but they boil down to the same thing: Dr. Wily wants to take over the world and Mega Man must stop him. Very simple, but adequate enough.
The gameplay is simple and fun. You basically start out with just an arm cannon, but after you beat a Robot Master, you get it's weapon. You can complete the Robot Master stages in any order you wish in Mega Man 1-6, but in Mega Man 7 and Mega Man 8 you have to fight 4 robot masters before you can fight the rest of them. The problem with the games is that Mega Man 1-6 have very little innovation. They don't stray too far from the same basic formula. Mega Man 7 and Mega Man 8 are a little more innovative but they still don't introduce anything too radical. But as long as the basic formula is fun, who cares!
Mega Man Anniversary Collection is an extremely difficult game. Every Mega Man game on the disc is full of tricky platform jumps, lots of enemies, and sometimes extremely hard puzzles. Bosses are difficult if you don't have the right weapon, and some are hard even if you do have the right weapon. There are some things that make the game a little easier, such as a robot dog to help you out starting in Mega Man 3, the ability to slide to avoid damage, also introduced in Mega Man 3, and the ability to use your arm cannon while still having a robot masters weapon equipped, starting in Mega Man 7. But still, even with these things, the games are still very difficult to beat.
Mega Man Anniversary Collection is a very fun, yet difficult game. If you think you are up to the challenge or like Mega Man, don't hesitate to buy it. More casual gamers might want to consider renting it first. All in all, Mega Man Anniversary collection is a fun, yet extremely hard game.
