"A very good DBZ game...if you can handle the childish melodies."
Dragonball Z: Budokai 2, it shall own your soul
Hey kids, did you ever hear of a show called Dragonball Z? Well it's a very cool story about power levels and demonic creatures fighting against a race of people called Saiyans. The Saiyans can turn into monkeys when they see the moon, they can reach unimaginable strength, kill people with a small punch, etc Well they end up defeating evil tyrants and demons trying to rule the universe. This game in particular goes all the way to the end of DBZ from the Frieza saga to the Majin Buu saga, just like in the show.
Story Mode 6/10
The story for the show and manga is insanely good, but if you never knew anything of DBZ other than this game, you'll think that DBZ is a boring show for little kids. The story mode of this game is called Dragon World, and it's gets stale so fast that it will make you want to puke your lungs out. The first time through is actually not so bad, but the second time will leave you with a syndrome of boredom. You start off as Goku in a board game and you go through the 9 stages with one or two allies fighting every character 2-3 times each to kill them. The last stages can even be 5 times each, and each battle gets progressively harder. Even if you actually like the idea of this board game, it well be hard to play through over and over, especially considering you have to play through up to 30 times to get all the skill capsules. Another bad point is that you end up fighting every character again and again throughout all the stages, because they keep spawning even if you already killed them in previous stages.
Game Play 9/10
The game play for this game is very good, especially if you have a lot of friends to play it with. You get tons and tons of capsules, which can help you power up your characters in your own custom way. This capsule system is implemented into the game perfectly. The fighting engine of this game is also pretty deep and you can pull off combos with ease. They are so easy to pull off, that you'll cry with joy. Also, you have a tournament mode which you can use to get money to spend on the store for more capsules. There are a lot of your favorite characters from the show in this game, but some might take a lot of effort to unlock.
The graphics for this game are beautiful and they deserve to be blessed. The backgrounds are also very detailed. It doesn't matter if you hate this game, you must still love the graphics. They are cel-shaded and it looks almost exactly like the show.
Well here is the worst part of the game. This has very bad music that should belong in a little kid's game, and some might argue that this is a little kid game, but it's not. The music is just disgusting and they should give us some real music, but at least it's not too annoying to make you not want to play. Just imagine doing a Super Spirit Bomb to kill Kid Buu. Well what do you hear?! Some sing-a-long beat which will make you want to mute the television. It makes me want to go to the game developers and crush their faces in. At least the voice overs are still perfect except for Cell's voice. Why does Cell have his first form voice if his first form isn't even in the game? I guess we'll never know...
After you play through Dragon World a few times, you'll never in life play this game again. But at least if you have people to play with you can play Duel Mode until the end of time!! Customizing all the characters with all the different capsules also gives you some more playtime for when you're bored. Also, this GameCube version gets exclusives, like 7 sparking capsules to get more money in the tournament, night and day stages, better graphics and way faster loading times. We even get a new Cell Games capsule so you can use fusions in the tournament, which will add a lot of replay value to the overall game.
Subliminal Messages of Evil/Character Poses 10/10
There are some pretty funny things in this game, if you know where to look. I gave this game a whole extra point because of this. Well each character has their own crazy and disturbing poses in this game and they will make your eyes bleed with sadness and your head will explode with fright. Not really, but they are pretty disturbing no matter how you look at it. Here are some examples of the funny and/or hellish poses in this game:
Piccolo: If you win a battle with Piccolo, at the ending pose he will usually say: "What a piece of trash." DEAR GOD, He says it so evil-ish with his dead eyes that you will run into a wall hoping to die.
Kid Trunks: At the start of a battle he will say, "My dad said I could pound your face in." What evil is this?! They are saying that Vegeta is allowing his son to go ruin peoples faces!! So people who play this game will grow up to tell their children to pound people's faces in and if a kid is playing this game, they will become psychotic and run around punching people in the face.
Goku: Here is the worst one of all. At the beginning of a battle, someone like Super Buu will usually say, "gonna kill you" and what does Goku say in return? He says in a questionably happy voice, "Ha Ha, I'm so excited!!" Why the hell does he say this? DEAR LORD NO!! This one made me completely die on the inside!!!!
This game is a completely good fighting game with only a few downsides. You will play it for a long time with friends and the graphics are perfect to compliment the look of the show. If you like DBZ at all, go check this game out.
BUY...trust me, you'll want to play this for a while and if you like Dragonball Z, you must have this!! If you don't like DBZ, then rent to see if you'll enjoy it, which you probably will, especially if you have an immunity to little kid music!! But be warned of the hidden messages my son......the path to mastering them is treacherous......"What a piece of trash." GOD, PLEASE NO!!!!
