"Bigger is not always better"

"California, Uber Alles, California!"

Welcome to American Wasteland a.k.a. Los Angeles

Ok so its the new Tony Hawk game in town everyone go crazy over it, than why is it still sitting on the shelves in EB and your local geek corner store...

Well that's why I'm here, to tell you why, also to tell you why you should get this game...

Game play

Well for starters there is the STORY MODE!!!

So in a nutshell; you hate your redneck life so you decide what-the-hey I'm going to go to L.A. and make it a big time skater just like the Z-Boys and "Birdman"...You get there, you get mugged; typical stereotype L.A.; than you meet a girl named Mindy and she helps you adjust to the big city.

So that's the story line let's move on to the more enjoyable part of this game...

Basically in story mode, you learn new moves ("Natas Spin" Variations, Bert Slide, Rail Stall, etc.), you meet new friends who help you finish your missions, and you collect "pieces" by vandalizing the city so you can build this mega-awesome "Skate Ranch" A.K.A the legendary Green Pipes Point. You know the usual same old-same old...

A nice touch up is earning money and customizing in shops in the city...sort of like real life...plus you don't have to wait around for it to load while you change from level to level, you get to keep skating and while the level is loading you can go into slow motion on the security-cams which I liked at least.

Now, let us move on to the least enjoyable part of the game

It's not as choppy and not-well-put-together as everyone says it is but it is lacking some serious touch-ups and details that would make it a whole lot better.

The cut scenes audio are pretty much screwed over, plus they NEVER say what their subtitles say...never...the moves can be difficult to master if you are not a veteran, (such as I), but other than that its an overall good story line for story mode...maybe if it were just a little bit longer...

Next, moving on to CLASSIC MODE!!!

Ok, this part I loved...

Get this, this go around its---CO-OP! Meaning that two people can play classic mode at once, meaning for the sick scores instead of button mashing out every move you know they combine your scores together, also meaning that one of you has to collect K-T while the other collects S-A-E...so yeah I really enjoyed this part of the game.

Good things=Cooperative mode (of course), it serves as replay value, and adds quite a challenge compared to Story mode...

Unfortunately, that is all I'm at liberty to say is good, even GREAT about Classic Mode.

Bad things= 6 stinking levels, that's it, not to mention they aren't even "classic" some of them...3 of the levels I've never played in my life, please explain that. But luckily, that's the only con; it's too darn short.

Graphics I would assume...

Well,... the graphics are a bit choppy but also they are like freaking cutting edge here people...if you really want to be a complainer and say "Oh these are horrible I can see for god's sake PIXELS *shudder*" Than play "THPS" a couple times. (THATS RIGHT, the original on N64) that might change your mind. Actually during skating the graphics are quite exquisite one might say, but during the mini cut-scenes it just makes you want to puke (well not really). It's a little blurry I'll admit but truth be told the graphics really are not that bad.

Moving on...

REPLAY VALUE

Always my favorite...mainly because I beat every game I own the weekend I get it...

THAW I will tell you has absolutely almost NO single player replay value...

I guess you could go for all the gaps and unlocking the few secret characters there are but that could take maybe another day or so...either way after that there isn't much you can do by yourself...

With multi-player however...

Multi-player, there is tons of modes to try and play, plus the levels are huge mainly East L.A. and Skate Ranch. Maybe if Game cube had an Internet connection it would be what I would call fantastic, but over all its pretty fun for multi-player. (Might I recommend making up games in free-skate multi-player, such as my copy-righted "Free Skate Tag" (c) 2001 (that's right I made it in THPS 2.)

Plus you can always make a park or a character or try to make a huge combo/high score but I was never good at making parks...lack creativity

Moving on...

Sound...

There is a huge variety of songs for those of you who are punk/skate/emo/rockers which are including me. The soundtrack is fantastic including The Doors (favorite), Dead Kennedy's, and Green Day just an example at how mixed up it is...trust me after hours of playing you will have the lyrics stuck in your head for life...(...singing drunken lullabies)(am I right, huh, huh?).

Closing

Pretty radical game with a few cons but none that should prevent you from buying it...but don't let me keep you from shopping smart...I seriously recommend getting a used disc it's just easier...

Have fun with this near flawless game
