"Variety makes Sonic Gems a hit!"
The original collection for Gamecube, Sonic Mega Collection, included many of Sonic's greatest hits. The main games were all extremely enjoyable but all gave a platforming experience. Gems collection gives fans a whole different experience with many different types of Sonic Games to choose from.
The Big Three:
Sonic CD: Sonic CD was released for only the Sega CD and PC and now its back. It plays just like the Genesis Sonics but now you have the ability to travel back and forth into the past and future. This game is a lot more open for exploration than some of the Genesis games and has a lot of replay value as well. For instance, you can race through the game, or slow down and try to create a good future by collecting the Time Stones. The sound track is pretty good even though many people complain for not have the Japanese Soundtrack. The only problem could be the spindash which is a bit different from other Sonic games but it is one of the Collection's greatest strengths. Score: 9.5/10
Sonic The Fighters: Sonic the Fighters (also known as Sonic Championship) is a fighting game using the Virtua Striker Engine and is extremely fun. You can choose from well known Sonic Characters such as Tails and Knuckles to obscure ones like Bean and Bark. The game isn't too hard but has different difficulties for replay. The 2P mode is really fun as well. You'll probably be playing this game just as much as CD. Score: 9/10
Sonic R: Sonic R was released for Saturn and Computer and was often criticized for being a horrible racer. Well the controls are pretty bad forcing you to use the L and R buttons for turns instead of the control stick. The one player mode has many things to do such as Grand Prix and Time Attack and 10 characters to play as and attempt to unlock. Playing with 4 players on the Gamecube was great however and makes the experience a lot better. Score: 8.5/10
The Game Gear Games:
The Game Gear games aren't really that bad and have a lot of variety. Sonic 2 and Sonic Triple Trouble are Platformers and are pretty good for a gamegear game. Sonic Drift 2 is a much better version than Drift 1 (Which was featured in Sonic Adventure: DX) and has a lot more characters and tracks. Tails Adventure is a really fun RPG style Sonic game in which Tails must save an island from an army of birds. Sonic Spinball is a pinball style Sonic Game but really isn't that great and Tails' Sky Patrol is a pretty hard game to play, but is kinda like a shooter. The game gear games are pretty unique but probably shouldn't be the reason you buy Gems. Score: 6/10
Extras: Sonic Gem Collection has a load of Extras from Games (Vectorman Series) to pictures and videos. It even has remixes of old Sonic Songs! Everything (except for the Vectorman games) is included in a museum which is huge and is a lot of fun to attempt to complete. You get more extras by playing games in the collection while completed goals stated in the museum. This may seem boring but the goals keep you going back for more. Extras Score: 10/10
Sonic Gems Collection has a variety of Sonic games from racers to fighting games to even RPGS. The different types of games gives you something to play, no matter what type of game your in the mood for.
