"Was Sonic Riders Worth the Wait?"
Sonic Riders is all about speed and skills. Do you think you have what it takes to become the ultimate rider?
The graphics in Sonic Riders are nicely done. They aren't as good as F-Zero Gx, but get the job done good. While playing the game for the first time, I was amazed by the CGI graphics. Sonic Riders keeps at a constant speed of 60 Frames per second, even while playing with multiple people.
The story is very simple forwarded, but is good for a Sonic game. Sonic and friends are searching for a chaos emerald in Metal City when they come across a gang known as the Babylon Rogues. The gang steals the chaos emerald Sonic and his friends were after. Managing to get one of the Babylon's boards, Sonic takes off on it going after the thieves of the chaos emerald. Soon after Sonic and his friends find out that Dr. Eggman is holding a grand prix and the prize is 7 chaos emeralds. Sonic seems disinterested until he finds out that the thieves of the chaos emerald had joined the tournament. Sonic decides to join knowing that the Babylon rogues were entering the grand prix.
The gameplay in Sonic Riders is very quick and fun. The goal of each level is to finish in first or the requirement of the stage. This game may seem hard at first, but with practice you can become a great player at this game. Some people may be discouraged by this and will put the game down. Don't be discouraged because you will be missing out on a lot of fun! Hoverboards are used to race along the many tracks of the game. The hoverboards run on air and need constant air to keep it running. You have an air meter that slowly goes down during the race. You can keep it up by doing tricks, grinding, etc. If you run out of air, you will be forced to run on the ground and find an air station to fill your air meter up. One of the features that makes Sonic Riders fun is its air turbulence system. If someone is going very fast, they will create a turbulence half-pipe. You can go into it and use it to catch up to the rival who created it. Very useful in many occasions. Many shortcuts await you on the courses, but only certain types of characters can use certain shortcuts. The three types of characters are speed, fly, and power. Speed characters can grind their way to victory using the grind rails, while fly people can use the turbo rings scattered across the sky of the courses. Power characters can use their mighty power to break through obstacles such as oncoming traffic and can find secret shortcuts. Many tracks are obtained throughout the game; 16 tracks total. Some tracks have mirror courses which are slightly different and are counted as one of the 16 tracks.
The controls are very simple in Sonic Riders. A is to jump, X or B is to boost, R and L are to do drift turns, the joystick is used to do tricks in the air, and that's all there is to it! Drifting is a bit strange, but after practicing it it gets easier to execute. Speed people can grind rails by jumping up near a rail with the A button and then pressing the A button again. Very simple, but fun in a lot of ways. If you happen to run into someone while you are boosting, your character will be able to attack that person and make them slow down. Very useful indeed! Is somebody on right on your tail? No worries, press the L and R buttons together to create a tornado right behind your back to attack the opponent! Miss the opponent and you will suffer a slow down in your speed.
Tricks are very easy to execute in this game. Push the joystick up, down, left, or right to pull of a trick. Land it just right to get a good ranking. Landing tricks fills your air meter back up.
You won't find nothing but techno songs in this game. They are pretty good and suit the game for its style. If you have ever watched the Sonic X series on TV, then you will recognize all of the voice actors on Sonic Riders. The voice actors do a very good job on their part for this game.
Sonic Riders has a ton of re-playability. After beating the story mode, a 60 mission mode opens up for you to complete. There is also a shop where you can use your rings to buy over 50 new hoverboards. Multi-player also adds to the re-playability. Got three friends? Check. Got four controllers? Check. Up to four players can play on all 16 tracks along with the three battle tracks. This will add tons of re-playability if you have these two things.
BUY OR RENT?
If you like the Sonic series a lot, then go out and buy it! This game is a very fun game all around and should be looked into with at least a rent if you are unsure.
+Story Mode & Extensive Mission Mode
