"Great football game."
The Madden Franchise is one that has a deep history. Fans around the globe buy different versions of the game each year. But is there a point to it?
Gameplay 10/10, 10/10
To me, in sports games, there are two areas of gameplay. The first one is the set up before you play a game. Madden does that really good this year. You can choose to play just a pickup game, with one team against another. You pick the weather, the stadium, the teams, and the uniforms before you play. You can choose how long the game is, how hard it is, and other things like that. Besides the Play Now feture, there are a lot of other ways to play. The biggest one is Franchise Mode. In Frachise Mode, you take control of an NFL team and manage rosters, prices and stadiums in an attempt to win the Super Bowl. You can hire and fire coaches, draft players, sign free agents, release players that are a nuisance to your team, and even move your team if things aren't working out. If your fans don't support you, you won't make money, and if you don't make money, you'll end up in the "red". Stay in the red for too long and you'll have to find a new job. Another good way to play is Career mode. In this mode, you're the newest inspired all star. You'll get contract offers, drafted, have interviews with NFL Network, and even have movie tryouts. depending on how well you do, you could even get yourself into the coveted Hall of Fame.
The other part of gameplay is how well the game actually, well, plays. Madden has a great formula, and it shows. Playing defense isn't too hard, and it isn't too easy. Playing offense has a few revamps from last year. Most notably, the running game has been pumped up significantly, with the addition of a "Highlight Stick". If you hit the "C" stick at just the right time, you'll bowl over defenders and would be tacklers with ease. The Quarterback "Passing Cone" also makes a return, but it doesn't have to be used all the time.
The graphics are the still the worst part of the game. The players all look mostly the same, and they physics are still all wrong; players still go through each other. The hit detection is also a bit off, which can get pretty annoying in a big game.
The sound is excellent too. The hits sound real, and the players yell at each other on the field. The crowd cheers at the right moments. However, the music is terrible. It's filled with campy pop, which ruins the setting of the game.
Overall, Madden is a great sports game that's not without it's flaws. It's a great game, and if you love football, you should definitely look into it.
