3. Introduction
-----------------------

Welcome to my strategy guide for Double Dragons for the Sega Master System.
This guide will help you make your way through the the mean streets of Double
Dragon and help you rescue your captured girlfriend. This guide is written as
if you are playing a single player game.

4. Story
-----------------------

In a city ravaged by war and corruption, law and order has taken a backseat to
terror and violence. Ruthless gangs rule the streets. Crime and bloodshed are
commonplace. The city lives in fear.

Your name is Billy Lee. Your twin brother is Jimmy Lee. On the streets they
call you the Spike, and your brother, the Hammer. That's because you are both
masters without equal in the ancient martial arts of Kenpo and Kung fu. You've
got what it takes to survive the meanest streets in the world! And now, you've
got troubles.

The Black Warriors, the meanest of the street gangs, is out for revenge: They
want you dead. To bring you out into their territory, they've kidnapped your

11. Walkthrough
-----------------------

a. Mission 1
------------
The Slums.

 Scene 1:
Press Button 1 to start the game. As the game starts you see your girlfriend,
Mary Ann, being taken away by memebers of the Black Warriors Gang. Immediately
after you appear a lone Rowper will come towards you from the right. Engage him
and as you head right a Williams and a second Rowper will then enter the fray.
After defeating the first Rowper a second Williams will enter the screen to
attack you. Once all have been defeated head right to enter the second scene.

 Scene 2:
As you head right you'll see a Williams perched on the rooftop waiting for you
to come by. Walk far enough over to bring him down then beat him to a pulp.
Once he is downed head right and pick up the whip. A Linda will come through
the doors and begin to attack you. If you didn't get to the whip in time she'll
pick it up and start to wail on you; use a jump kick to knock her down and make
her drop the whip. A second Linda will come from the left shortly after the
first one appears. Using the whip you can easily defeat them without taking any
damage. After the Linda that came through to door is downed another one will
come from the right side of the screen. Beat her and then move on to the right.
As you do an Abobo will burst out of the wall. Use the whip to stay out of his
reach and eventually he'll go down. Move on to enter the thrid and final scene
of Mission 1.

 Scene 3:
The second you enter this scene you'll meat up with a Rowper and a Williams
both of whom are a dark shade of red. This change in color does not make them
any stronger than their fairer skined counterparts. Head past them and grab the
oil drum laying on the ground. Stand a ways away from them and throw it at them
to knock them off their feet. A second hit and the should be down for the
count. Once defeated another Rowper and Williams will arrive to avenge their
fallen comrads. Do the same thing to these two and when Williams falls this
mission's boss will try to stop you. The boss of this scene is an Abobo that
has also become a deep red. Unlike Rowper and Williams the color change seems
to have made Abobo stronger. You can use the same tactics against Abobo that
you used against the previous foes in this scene. Be aware that shortly after
Rowper is defeated another one will try to sneak up on you from the left. The
mission ends when Abobo is defeated and any other enemies have either fled or
been killed.

b. Mission 2
------------
The Factory District.

 Scene 1:
As soon as the mission starts a Linda will appear and start to attack you. Head
right and you'll see a Williams picking up a stick of dynamite and a Rowper.
Either knock Williams down and pick up the dynamite or have him throw it and
have one of the other enemies walk into the blast killing them instantly. After
the dynamite has exploded either Rowper or Williams will head off towards the
right side of the screen. Let him go while you take care of whoever remains.
A second Linda will arrive to take the place of the first and a replacement for
whichever of the two men that didn't run will arrive after his death.
Eventually the escapee will return with a baseball bat. Knock him down and pick
up the bat to lay waste to all those around you afterwards heading further into
the factory to the right.

 Scene 2:
Here you'll come across the first obstacle of the game, piles of steel beams
with a pit. To ascend the beams you have to use a jump kick. Avoid moving to
the bottom of the screen as you will fall in the pit and lose a life. Once on
the first layer of beams you will come across a Williams with another stick of
dynamite. As you fight him another Williams will come from the right and a
Rowper from the left. Once again the enemies have changed to red yet are no
stronger than those in the rest of the level. If the dynamite has yet to be
used throw it near the end of a layer when a foe is climbing up and it should
blow them away. After you defeat a Williams a Rowper will challenge you as
well. After all have been beaten climb to the top layer and head right.

 Scene 3:
Immediately you'll be assualted by a Rowper and Linda. Try to use the bottom
left corner of the scene to kock them off of the edge. If you've gone too far
right to use the ledge pickup the SEGA box and toss it at your foes. Once
defeated a Williams will exit the door to replace Rowper and another Linda for
the first. Beat them and another pair will come at you. After you've defeated
the secomd Williams the mission's boss, Willy, will fall from up high to fight
you. Fight him as you would Rowper or Williams or just crush him with the box.
When everyone besides you is dead the third mission will begin.

c. Mission 3
------------
The Park.

 Scene 1:
The enemies in this mission are noticably stronger than those in the last and
thus it will take more hits to knock down one of them than it did previously.
As the mission begins a Rowper will enter from the right carrying a knife. Move
yourself so that you're directly across from him and then dodge the knife when
he throws it. He will then head off to the right and as you give chase two more
will block your way. As you defeat each Rowper he will be replaced by a
Williams. If you couldn't catch up to him the first Rowper will return with a
stick of dynamite, if you did then one of the Williams will have it instead.
Either take it from him or let him use it and finish off the rest of your foes.

 Scene 2:
The first thing you'll notice is that again all your adversaries, Linda,
Rowper, and Williams, are now colored red. The second thing will be that Rowper
is carrying a knife. Try to put one of the other two between you and Rowper and
he should hit them instead. After the knife is thrown one of the men will start
to head off to the right. Let him go while you handle the others. When he
returns he will have a bat. Knock the bat from his hands and then leave it on
the ground. The reason is that usually either Rowper or Williams will head for
the bat leaving the others to engage you alone. Every time it is picked up
knock it away and continue until only one guy is left, then use it to beat his
skull in. All three will be followed by another one after their defeat and then
a final Rowper will follow after the others have been defeated.

 Scene 3:
As you enter this scene you'll come across the next big obstacle of the game, a
broken bridge crossing a river. Be careful as you fight near here as falling
into the river is fatal. Before you make it to the bridge though Abobo will
try to take you down. The best way to deal with him is to knock kim into the
river where he'll die instantly. The problem with this is that he will usually
move to the left side of you keeping you between him and the river. As you move
closer to the bridge a Williams will jump out of the trees and attack you as
well. The easiest way to handle those two is to just run away. Jump over the
gap in the bridge and run to the right. Because they cannot cross the gap both
will be stuck on the other side. After being off screen for a bit they will
both mysteriously die and you'll be met by a Rowper and a Linda armed with a
whip. Knock the whip away from Linda and then use it to fight the pair. Use
caution when using the whip against the men as their jump kick can clear its
range. Once downed a Linda will replace Rowper and a Williams will take Linda's
place. Beat them and they'll be followed by an Abobo and another Rowper,
respectively. Killing those two will then finally end this scene.

 Scene 4:
As you enter this scene the screen wil adjust itself to show the pit that now
runs along the bottom of it. Walking along the path you will find a rock
guarded by two Rowpers. Use the rock like you did the oil drum and box from
previous missions to take down those who stand in your way. Each of the Rowpers
will have a Williams take their place in the fight and then they will be
followed by an Abobo each. If both Abobos end up on the screen at the same time
try as hard as you can to avoid being caught in between them as they will beat
you to a pulp in no time. When the Abobos fall you can head on to the final
scene of this mission.

 Scene 5:
The new hazard for this scene is that there is now a big cliff that you are on
top of with a bridge and a big pit underneath. The best tactic is the stay on
top of the cliff and have your enemies come to you. Somehow using the jump kick
they can climb the sheer face of the cliff. The first enemy you'll see will be
a green Willy. This Willy, and the rest in the game, is not as strong as the
boss of the last stage. Also the new green color everyone has adopted has not
made them any stronger. Following him will be a green Williams. Once they have
climbed up to yor position have them follow you to the lower part of the screen
and then knock them off of the edge. Be careful as you too can be knocked into
the pit. After fighting two more pairs of Wills the boss of Mission 3 will
attack. You will probably think you're fighting the Incredible Hulk when you
first lay eyes on the green Abobo, and you wouldn't be too far off. Hop off the
cliff and run past Abobo to the right where lays a rock. Throw it at him and
you'll realize that he must indeed be the Hulk as he takes a rock to the face
and just keeps coming. Keep throwing the rock at him and every other hit should
knock him down. After a long and hard fought battle he finally falls and you
can then go on to the final mission.

d. Mission 4
------------
The Black Warriors' Headquarters.

 Scene 1:
This final mission is low on enemies but full of dangerous traps that can kill
you almost instantly. To increase the challenge even more you are no longer
allowed any extra continues or to have a second player join so you must finish
this level with what you had left over from the last mission (unless you use
the cheats section below). The beginning of this mission has no enemies
whatsoever but is still very dangerous. The first danger is that random
sections of the stone walls will occasionally push out and hurt you. There are
two of these here with a safe spot inbetween. The second danger runs along the
whole of the level and is a spike filled pit along the bottom part of the
screen. To get past the walls move next to the first set and wait for about
three differnt stones to push out, then dash past them and do the same thing
with the next one. When you make it past those you will move on to the next
scene.

 Scene 2:
When you enter this scene you will see a door with a statue wielding a spear
above it. Periodically the statue will thrust its spear out damaging anything
underneath it. Move to the top of the screen and wait for the statue to thrust.
Once it does run past and you'll come across a second one facing the other
direction. Also here is a Rowper who picks up a knife and heads for you. The
statue should jut its spear out just as he is walking by thus impaling him and
making him drop the knife. Go pick up the knife and throw it at him when he
gets up. After that he may get speared by the statue again but if he doesn't
you will have to finish him off yourself. Once he dies the statues stop their
attack and you can move on freely.

 Scene 3:
This scene is much like the first with the moving walls. Move to the top of the
screen and stand next to the first wall and wait for three parts to come out.
Immediately start running to the right without stopping. Go right past the
second wall and continue goiung right into the next scene.

 Scene 4:
Keep going right as you enter this scene until you clear the statue's spear.
Head right again after the screen has caught up a bit and you'll come to
another statue with a Williams and a stick of dynamite on the other side. Try
to use both to your advantage as you fight him. Once Williams is dead the end
of the statue's spear will dissapear and you can continue on.

 Scene 5:
This scene can become one of the hardest in the game if you are not careful and
like to just rush ahead through a level. The good thing here is that there are
no more killer walls or spears, the only hazard here is the spiked pit along
the bottom. The first thing to do is to press right up against the top wall.
Then slowly creep along the wall by just tapping right instead of running
across. This slow pace will save you from a major beating. Eventually as you
are creeping along the wall a red Abobo will burst through the wall ahead of
you. Immediately turn around and head as far to the left as you can. This
protects you from acidentally having a second one come crashing out of the wall
at you. Once Abobo reaches you fight him using regular battle tactics. Once he
is defeated another will come from the left and fight you. Bring down this
second one and then a red Williams will walk across the screen. Let him go by
you and eventually he will return with a knife. Dodge it and he will leave to
get another one. After he throws the second knife let him come over to you and
fight him. Note that unlike in the rest of the game where only Abobo was
strengthened by a color change the red Williams are as powerful as the Abobos
in this mission. Whne you finally take Williams down go to the right and
another red Abobo will burst through the wall behind you. After you kill him a
second Williams will come followed by a final red Abobo after his death. Slowly
make your way to the next and final scene of the game.

 Scene 6:
As you enter this last scene the screen will readjust so that the pit along the
bottom of the screen is much smaller. Slowly head right until an Abobo comes at
you. Hard back to the left and fight and kill him when he comes near. Shortly
after his death a Willy will appear from the right. Wait for him to come to you
and then bring him down. Another one will come after the death of the first so
fight him the same way. Once you've taken care of the two Willys slowly head
right again until a Williams challenges you. This one is not as powerful as the
two red ones you fought in the previous scene but he is still dangerous
nonetheless. Once he goes down you'll fight two more Willys like you did after
Abobo. After you've finished with them move further right to take on Rowper.
Bring him and the Willy that comes after down and the music will stop. When
the large doors at the top of the room are completely on screen the leader of
the Black Warriors Gang, Jeff, will come foreward to defeat you. Jeff carries
with him a gun which he will fire at you quite often. One hit from a bullet
spells instant death for you and you cannot make him drop the weapon. Avoid his
bullets and fight him to the best of your abilities. After he falls the game is
over and you have won unless...

 Final Scene:
If two players are alive after defeating the final boss a special battle will
begin. Billy and Jimmy must fight each other to win the heart of Marry Ann.
Both players begin the battle with full life bars and only one life, there are
no continues here. On the ground between the two combatents is a baseball bat.
Uusally the best strategy is to grab the baseball bat and then beat on your
opponent with it and jump kicks, but really what you need to do depends on both
your and you opponent's playing style. After the fight the eding will play.

e. Ending:
------------
After you've defeated Jeff, and possibly your brother, Mary Ann will drop from
her bonds and give you a kiss. The background then goes black and the phrase
"May you live happily forever." comes on screen followed by the Technos and
Sega copyrights and then finally "The End". After which the game returns to
the title screen.
