Mortal Kombat was released in the arcades in 1993 and became an instant sucess.
There are much better histories on the game and the phenomenom it spawned out
there then I can write, so I'll just focus on the Game Gear version of the
game. Released in 1993, the same year as the arcade version, the handheld
version of Mortal Kombat came out on both Gameboy and Game Gear. At the time it
was the height of the Sega-Nintendo competition and any edge either company
could get was sought. Nintendo, appealing to soccer moms everywhere, cut out
the blood from their releases of Mortal Kombat. Sega, on the other hand,
ostensibly cut out the blood, but left the famous "Blood Code" in the cartridge
for both the Genesis and Game Gear. In the end, Sega outsold Nintendo in Mortal
Kombat three to one. The Game Gear version of the game is obviously not as good
as either of the console version, but it does beat out its Gameboy counterpart
by the simple fact that it is in color (the Gameboy version is notoriously hard
to see). Both games have a six character line-up and two bosses. Reptile is
missing from both games, while Kano is missing from the Game Gear version and
Johnny Cage is missing from the Gameboy version. This guide offers bios, move
lists, and endings for all the characters. The text is taken straight from the
first Mortal Kombat or Mortal Kombat II (in the case of Shang Tsung and
Reptile). The Blood Code appears at the very end of this guide. Assume facing
right for the moves. P is punch/button 1, K is kick/button 2, and B is block.
Fatalities can only be performed at the end of the match when it says, "Finish
Him!" To execute the famous "Pit Fatality" simply uppercut your opponent at The
Pit when prompted.
