Review by Captain Doormat
The evil Dr Robotnik has kidnapped Sonic's buddy, Tails! It is up to you as Sonic to collect all the Chaos Emeralds, defeat Robotnik and save Tails!
You start at the left of a level. You work your way right to the end. Along the way you may encounter several baddies named, 'Badniks'. If you hit these, you die. To prevent this happening, you collect 'Rings', so when you hit a badnik, you lose your rings. With no rings you are vulnerable. If you get 100 rings you earn an extra life.
To kill badniks, you jump on them. Sonic can spin through walls, use spring pads, and find secret passageways. This all works very well, but more often than not, the levels are too damn short. You can whisk through them in 30 seconds or so.
The emeralds are hidden on every second act of every zone. They require a big search to locate them. If you collect all the emeralds, you will see the proper ending.
Every third act contains a boss. These are either frustratingly hard or laughably easy. They are unimaginative, and all you need to do is to wait till the stop attacking, then hit them. Repeat.
There are many hidden passages and goodies for you to find.
Nice for a gamegear. Nice and clear, but they blur terribly whilst you run. And at times, special effects can pee everything up. For example, the second act of the Aqua Lake Zone. At the start, transparent blue water rises. This almost slows the in game action to a halt. You can't actually break into a run. Some people would argue that it 'simulates the effect of being under water', but i say that it must be something to do with the limitations of the Gamegear.
The music has all the Sonic charm.. which unfortunately isn't a good thing. Repetitive tunes get annoying quickly, as do the sounds. I was impressed by the Stereo effect that the sound effects had, but the novelty soon wore off and became off-putting. You're trying to bloody concentrate, and you've got a damn *dwong!* noise echoing from left to right and back again, fading out.
The invincibility music is THE BEST invincibility music in all of the games :).
Hard for young people. I had almost completed it in forty minutes.
You won't be coming back once you've done. No secret modes to unlock or anything. Once you're done, you're done, though I'm keeping it as part of my Sonic collection.
It's fun for a little while, but soon it gets tedious and frustrating. The death tune is SO ANNOYING!
